Engorged Ixodes ricinus nymphs collected from sheep resident in an upland UK field site were significantly lighter than nymphs that engorged on previously tick-naïve sheep, indicating that site-resident sheep continually exposed to ticks acquired anti-tick resistance. The weights of engorged nymphs that fed on naturally tick-resistant sheep increased significantly, however, when increasingly high numbers of adult female ticks fed on the sheep during seasonal peaks of tick activity. This relationship was unaffected by variations in nymph weight amongst individual sheep, between seasons and year

We reviewed three hypotheses of intersexual segregation (predation-risk, forage-selection, and activity-budget hypotheses) to determine if they also explained intrasexual segregation of female Stone’s sheep. In most animal species, males are predicted to compete for reproductive opportunities, while females are expected to choose between potential mates. However, when males' rate of reproduction is constrained, or females vary widely in ‘quality’, male mate choice is also predicted to occur. Such conditions exist in the promiscuous mating system of feral Soay sheep on St Kilda, Scotland, where a highly synchronized mating season, intense sperm competition and limitations on sperm production constrain males' potential reproductive rate, and females vary substantially in their ability to produce suc

Abstract:
Abstract The process of single point incremental micro-plastic forming is presented. This process is used to form sheet metal into complicated shapes without the use of either a male or female die. The process uses a single point tool which plastically deforms sheet metal to give a local micro-deformation. By doing this incrementally, and controlling the tool path with a CNC mill, the plastically deformed points are, in effect, added as the tool moves to give a final shape. The sheet metal is held in place by a blank-holder which moves in a vertical plane on four posts. Deformation of the stri

Abstract:
This interdisciplinaray work combines expertise in engineering and entomology in Israel and the US, to develop an acoustic trap for mate-seeking female medflies. Medflies are among the world's most economically harmful pests, and monitoring and control efforts cost about $800 million each year in Israel and the US. Efficient traps are vitally important tools for medfly quarantine and pest management activities; they are needed for early detection, for predicting dispersal patterns and for estimating medfly abundance within infested regions. Early detection facilitates rapid response to invasio
