Abstract:
This book investigates the aesthetic and conceptual characteristics of fifteenth-century female portraiture on panel. Portraits of women increased substantially during this century. They formed part of a material and a visual culture borne out of the rapid rise of an oligarchy from entrepreneurial activities that was especially advanced in the urbanised territories of Italy and Flanders. For this reason, the portraits in this book are by Netherlandish and Italian painters. They are simultaneously illustrative of the emancipation of the genre from its medieval idiom, and of the responses to the

Abstract:
This chapter explores conflicting developments in the context of tenant experience during the height of the Cold War. Set against a national background of McCarthyite repression, suburban growth, conservative gender ideology, and class stratification, the chapter discusses two fronts of tenant activity: the construction of labor-union cooperatives and the fight against “urban renewal.” It considers the dislocations of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, many from vigorous working-class neighborhoods, in the name of slum clearance. It also examines the tenants' urbanist rebuttal to the postwa

This is the first book to critically and visually explore the spatial practices of refuge in response to conditions of war, violence, and displacement experienced in Iraq from 2003 to 2023. Written by an Iraqi architect who has lived through the trauma of several wars, 10 years of UN-imposed sanctions, an invasion, and the subsequent violence, this book captures a broad spectrum of spatial responses to trauma and presents a fresh perspective on how ordinary Iraqis create refuge across the spaces of the home, the urban environment, and border geographies.
