Abstract:
A case of bilateral insertion of flexor pollicis longus to the proximal as well as the distal phalanges is reported. Initially, this case was diagnosed as congenital absence of the flexor pollicis longus, but surgery revealed an intact tendon, with the abnormality only present in the site of insertion. A survey of the literature on congenital abnormalities of flexor pollicis longus failed to reveal any reports of similar abnormalities.

Abstract:
We report a case of flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture after arthrodesis of the trapeziometacarpal joint with headless screws using the criss-cross technique. Although flexor pollicis longus tendon rupture is a conceivable complication after the trapeziometacarpal joint arthrodesis, very few cases have rarely been reported in the literature. We should remind that screws inserted into the trapezium could lead to a rupture of the flexor pollicis longus tendon.

Anterior interosseous nerve palsy is rare. Isolated neuropraxia of its branch to the flexor pollicis longus is even rarer. We present a case of a 24-year-old man who presented with weakness of his left thumb flexion after sustaining closed fracture of the proximal third of his left radius. On exploration, the anterior interosseous nerve and its branches was found to be intact as was the flexor pollicis longus. Electrophysiological studies demonstrated acute left anterior interosseous nerve neuropathy. Electromyography showed discrete motor unit at the flexor pollicis longus. Two months later t

Flexor pollicis longus paralysis related to idiopathic anterior interosseous nerve syndrome is well known, but few reports exist on bilateral disease. A 24-year-old man with no personal or family history of neurological disease developed isolated total loss of active flexion of the right thumb’s interphalangeal joint after undergoing a wrist arthroscopy. Surgical exploration 5 weeks after onset showed flexor pollicis longus tendon to be intact; anterior interosseous nerve decompression was done with no abnormalities found. Because of persistent paralysis, electromyography was performed showing

A case is presented of acute loss of function of flexor pollicis longus and profundus tendon to the index finger. Although the aetiology was obscure, the acute onset suggested a mechanical cause rather than a nerve compression disorder such as anterior interosseous nerve palsy. X-rays showed an ununited scaphoid fracture related to an injury many years previously. Surgical exploration revealed attritional rupture of flexor pollicis longus and partial division of profundus tendon to index finger by a spicule of ununited scaphoid which had eroded through the volar capsule. The scope of the project was to design a pneumatic cylinder for measuring the resistive and applied force of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) after anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) surgery. The patient’s distal section of the first phalange, of the thumb, is the area of evaluation. The device is intended for assessing both the quality of the surgery results as well as physical therapy progression. Criteria such as mobility, compact design, accuracy, repeatability, and ease of operation are some of the major requirements. The initial prototype is intended to collect FPL strength data to establ

The ability to hold an object between the thumb and the lateral aspect of the index finger (lateral pinch) is an important aspect of hand function. Previous studies suggest that current biomechanical models of the thumb do not accurately predict lateral pinch force [1, 2]. These studies modeled the thumb using simplified joint descriptions based on orthogonal and intersecting axes of rotation. A detailed anatomical study indicates that the axes of rotation of the thumb are actually both non-intersecting and non-orthogonal [3]. It has also been reported that the anatomical variability observed
