Abstract:
Mg especially in the molten state is well known for its high affinity to O2. When O2 content of the atmosphere is larger than 4%, molten Mg will burn! To avoid this, melt protection is necessary. At present mostly SF6 is used during primary production and processing of Mg and its alloys. Unfortunately SF6 is a very potent greenhouse gas that is > 23,000 times more effective than CO2. This also affects life cycle considerations e.g. for the use of Mg alloys in transportation. However, other protective gases like SO2 or fluorinated hydrocarbons like HFC134a, Novec 612, or AMCover (=HFC134a) h

Abstract:
Functionalisation of hydrocarbons is a field of continuing activity and a variety of approaches to this field, have been taken. This thesis is concerned with the functionalisation of the carbon-hydrogen bond, in hydrocarbons, using fluorinated alkenes via a free radical chain mechanism. Addition of the nucleophilic alkyl radical to the electrophilic fluorinated alkene, specifically hexafluoropropene, occurs readily to give incorporation of the polyfluoroalkyl group into a number of hydrocarbons, including aliphatic, mono-, bi- and polycyclic systems. Further chemistry of these polyfluoroalkyla

The discovery of unique properties of graphene has led to the development of graphene for a variety of applications like integrated circuits, organic electronic devices, supercapacitors, sensors, and composite materials. Fluorination of graphene enables control of its physical, chemical, and electronic properties. Our initial studies demonstrated the viability of sulfur hexafluoride plasmas to fluorinate epitaxial graphene as a safer alternative to the commonly reported techniques of fluorination that include exposures to fluorine and xenon difluoride gas. Fluorinated hydrocarbon has been used as lubricants on the surface of magnetic hard disk drive. This is because this compound is thermally stable. However it has been found that fluorinated hydrocarbon was degraded on the surface during friction to generate radicals1,2). Therefore we considered that hard ceramics will be worn out in the gaseous atmosphere of fluorinated hydrocarbon by radical reactions. If the interaction of gas to ceramics is strong, we can expect that the surface will be polished through tribochemical processes. In the present paper, we investigated the characteristic of tri
