Abstract:

Functionalisation of hydrocarbons is a field of continuing activity and a variety of approaches to this field, have been taken. This thesis is concerned with the functionalisation of the carbon-hydrogen bond, in hydrocarbons, using fluorinated alkenes via a free radical chain mechanism. Addition of the nucleophilic alkyl radical to the electrophilic fluorinated alkene, specifically hexafluoropropene, occurs readily to give incorporation of the polyfluoroalkyl group into a number of hydrocarbons, including aliphatic, mono-, bi- and polycyclic systems. Nitroxides are intermediates in the accepted reaction mechanisms of the antioxidant activity of diarylamines and hindered alkyl amines. The parent amines are used as additives to preserve synthetic and natural hydrocarbon-based materials from oxidative degradation. A new material for use as a proton exchange membrane in fuel cells has been developed: a blend of a perfluorocyclobutane-based block ionomer (S-PFCB) and Poly (vinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (Kynar Flex, KF). Modifications were undertaken to a static high pressure vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) apparatus described by Naidoo [2004]. The alterations were made to improve the sample analysis technique. These modifications included the incorporation of the ROLSITM sampling device into the equilibrium cell, a re-design of the air bath which improved the temperature profile and further alterations described in the text. The ageing of high density polyethylene geomembrane (GM) liners used to minimize advection and diffusion of contaminants in municipal solid waste landfill leachate and in hydrocarbon spills to the environment is examined.
