Abstract:
The thesis presents an investigation of several aspects of fuel additive performance, including the effects of additives on the pump torque required to deliver high pressure fuel to engine injectors, the fuel droplet size distribution at sub-zero diesel fuel temperature, when wax formation occurs, and the ignition delay of diesel fuel combustion in an engine as well as constant volume combustion vessel. Exhaust emissions due to fuel additives were also investigated in an engine. A pump torque rig was designed and commissioned to investigate fuel additive performance at various pump speeds, fue

Four carboxylate terminated half generation polyamdioamine (PAMAM) dendrimers (G3.5- G6.5) were conjugated with the active components of cisplatin, {Pt(NH3)2}2+, or oxaliplatin, {Pt(R,R-dach)}2+, to form dendrimer platinate complexes. The platinum content of the cisplatin containing complexes was measured using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The number of cisplatin molecules was found to increase with increasing dendrimer size, 22 – 94, however the assumed bidentate binding mode allows for a total of 32 – 256 cisplatin moieties per dendrimer. Whilst the number of cisp

This research was conducted to investigate how e-health technologies can contribute to the delivery of pharmaceutical care throughout the patient's journey and across traditional care boundaries. The hypothesis was that e-health technologies are enablers of efficient seamless delivery of pharmaceutical care. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to examine how hospital clinical pharmacists work; to find out which toxicities were experienced by patients prescribed systemic anticancer therapy (SACT) and what their pharmaceutical care issues were; and to investigate the views of both can

A technological transfer was undertaken to reproduce the Sebomin® multiparticulate product utilising lab-scale extrusion/spheronisation equipment. On successful completion, modulation of various processing parameters and the effect on the resultant granule and pellet characteristics evaluated. Myxospermous seeds are characterised by the secretion of mucilage around the seed during germination. Capsella bursa-pastoris is an annual or perennial herbal plant of Brassicaceae family which has myxospermous seeds. This thesis studied extracted Capsella bursa-pastoris mucilage to see if it could be employed as a drug delivery system targeting the nasal cavity. Firstly, different extraction methods were used to extract the mucilage from Shepherd’s purse seeds without other contaminating components present from the seed coat. The extraction methods included the use of different solvents and t

A number of innovative techniques were developed to carry genetic material into cells, making gene therapy one of the most active fields in biotechnology. Interest in this domain is due to two factors: the therapeutic potential of the approach and lack of delivery systems which fulfil all requirements for clinical implementation. The advent of new nanotechnologies, combined with a better understanding of biological processes, enables the development of more sophisticated tools for delivery of genetic material to cells. This thesis reports on these novel nanocarriers with promising features for

To investigate the localization and targeting of sodium channels in neurons, an efficient means of gene delivery will need to be established. Two amplicon-based viral approaches and a recombinant whole virus approach were attempted in order to package and express RIIA sodium channel tagged with a c-myc epitope (RIIA-myc) with the ultimate purpose of developing a Herpes virus-based model system for targeting studies.<br>Immunofluorescent staining of transfected epithelial cells was carried out to demonstrate that constructs created for use in these HSV-based approaches were capable of a high le

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become some of the most promising drug delivery systems due to their unique properties, especially their high surface area and their ease to penetrate cells. The aim of this thesis was to render single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) more biocompatible, and to test their ability to selectively deliver suitable dosages of anti-cancer drugs to αvβ3 integrins and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expressing cancer cells used as delivery targets. Those two targets are important to consider, as they are highly present on the cell membrane of several cancer cells,
