The aim of this book is to shed new light on the connections between the islands of the Odyssey, setting aside the common perspectives which fully contrast Ithaka to the isles of Odysseus’s travels. Indeed, on a close reading, the idea of ‘otherness’ frequently associated to these isles can be perceived as the result of shared traits. The book first offers an introductory survey on the studies about islands and insularity (not only) in the Odyssey. Then, it analyses how and in which terms the Odyssean representations of the islands are elaborated by means of references to the characters’ sense

Anxious to defend the liberty of their own city or commune against the threat of ‘tyranny’, they appealed to imperial authority for protection. This book introduces the theory of complex surfaces through a comprehensive look at finite covers of the projective plane branched along line arrangements. It emphasizes those finite coverings that are free quotients of the complex 2-ball. The book also includes a background on the classical Gauss hypergeometric function of one variable, and a chapter on the Appell two-variable F1 hypergeometric function. The book began as a set of lecture notes, taken by the author, of a course given by Friedrich Hirzebruch at ETH Zürich in 1996. The lecture notes were then considerably expanded over a number

Abstract This book demonstrates that a full accounting of early modern women’s literary and creative activities is required for the future of literary studies writ large. Providing evidence of not only the relevance but the necessity of early modern women’s writing to the larger field of English literature, it argues that critical questions raised by early modern women’s writing provide opportunities to rethink enduring topics of scholarly interest. In its state-of-the-field assessment, it examines how perennial questions about authorship, canon, and literary value have historically influenced

The legal position of Visiting Forces transcends domestic and international law and is of growing importance in our increasingly globalized and insecure world. ‘In area’ and ‘out of area’ operations, both for the purpose of establishing and maintaining peace and in connection with the conduct of other military operations and training, are likely to become more frequent for a variety of reasons. Finding where the applicable law places the balance between the interests, sensitivities, and needs of the Host State and the requirements, often practical in nature, of the visiting force is a key obje

This edition offers a full and up-to-date commentary on the last book of the Republic, and explores in particular detail the two main subjects of the book: Plato's most famous and uncompromising condemnation of poetry and art, as vehicles of falsehood and purveyors of dangerous emotions, and the Myth of Er, which concludes the whole work with an allegorical vision of the soul's immortality and of an eternally just world-order. The commentary gives careful and critical attention to the arguments deployed by Plato against poets and artists, relating them both to the philosopher's larger ideas an

Abstract By taking as its purview the full seventeenth century, 1603–1700, this volume re-draws the existing literary historical map and expands upon recent rethinking of the canon. Placing the revolutionary years at the centre of a century of poetic transformation, and putting the Restoration back into seventeenth-century literary history, the volume registers the transformative effects on poetic forms of a century of social, political, and religious upheaval. It considers the achievements of a number of women poets, not yet fully integrated into traditional literary histories. It assimilates

Abstract:
Time in even classical mechanics has yet to be fully appreciated by philosophers. This chapter begins with time as it is presented to us in Newton's famous “Scholium.” It shows how and why Newton developed a notion that has various specific features, namely, those needed for time to play the role it does in classical dynamics, and, first, asks the question of why Newton needed his “absolute” time. The chapter then deals with refining the concept of time; temporal metric and dynamical laws; and the place of time in foundational physics.
