Abstract:
This dissertation explores the work of Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona (1927-2007) from an interpretive angle that privileges the ideas of place and poetic experience, seen as two essential aspects of the architect's métier. The dissertation looks at the experience and making—or generative processes—of Rogelio Salmona's places through the lenses of the poetics of imagination. This thesis examines representations of the madman in British Romantic poetry through a psychogeographical lens to argue that the poet strategically constructs madness as an unreachable place in order to secure his own role in society. Abstract:
At the end of the nineteenth century, St. Lawrence Boulevard, popularly known as 'the Main', attained mythical status in Montreal. Due to its particular location in the social and cultural geography of Montreal, the Main, which symbolically divides the working-class Francophone east and the Anglophone bourgeois west, has developed as a mixed-use commercial artery, an eclectic border zone of a bilingual, multi-ethnic city. The heterogeneous character of the Main is reflected in its material landscape---with its old and now largely re-used garment sweat-shops and labour halls, theatres of the re

Abstract:
The present study investigated the neural mechanisms by which environmental stimuli guide conditioned behaviors in the amphetamine conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Systemically injected D1 and D2 dopamine antagonists blocked both acquisition and expression of the CPP: the selective D1 antagonist more effectively blocked expression than the D2 antagonists. The site of action of the antagonists on expression was the nucleus accumbens. Systemically injected reserpine, but not intra-accumbens a-MPT microinjections, also blocked the expression of the amphetamine CPP. Pre-conditioning an

Abstract:
Late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Montreal witnessed the proliferation of parks and playgrounds. Products of urban capitalist development, these deeply ideological spaces, inscribed with different gender, class, ethnic, and sexual meanings, are the subject of this thesis. Moving from the scenic park to the neighbourhood park to the playground, this study examines the relationship among the power to construct a space, the values inscribed in it, and a system of regulation designed to either bar the less powerful or eject those who challenged these values. It links the uneven developm

This thesis focuses on the development of the Direct Broadcasting Satellite in Japan under its Kodo Johoka Shakai (Highly Advanced Information Society) policy. The field of new media policies is relatively new but very important in communications studies. The development of new media technologies changes into existing media systems, and profoundly influences economies which are increasingly dependent upon information services.<br>Japan's case is particularly interesting. Relatively little is known about its DBS policy compared to other industrialized countries, even though Japan has already be

Abstract:
Wet-bond of hybrid carbon and glass fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to cast-in-place concrete has been developed for a steel-free reinforced concrete structure. The prefabricated FRP is to serve as both stay-in-place form and external reinforcement, and the carbon and glass hybrid to provide suitable ductility in reinforcement. FRP formwork and cast-in-place concrete are connected through a fresh epoxy resin for a composite action. Since the new structure is solely dependent on the bond between FRP and concrete, a durable bond is of paramount importance. The purpose of this study is

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes how a network of Iranian artists and intellectuals, living in Montreal, cultivate a particular subjectivity by engaging in cultural practices such as weekly cultural gatherings which generally focus on literary, artistic, historical and/or philosophical discussions. In order to study this process I conducted an ethnographic study from June 2008- May 2009 primarily concerned with gathering qualitative research. The ethnography specifically focuses on two Iranian artists and a group called CaféLitt. It is through this cultural practices or practices of association that Irani

Abstract:
Scarce research to date has examined the role of place in the lives of children affected by political violence. The following dissertation explores the concept and meaning of place for children and families living under occupation and experiencing political violence in post-second intifada Palestine. By tackling a theoretical concept such as place, this dissertation tangibly uncovers how and to what extent the occupation and political violence affect Palestinian children and families' relationships with place and how different kinds of places—home, school, neighborhood communities, and nation-
