Electron microprobe analyses of platform (pectiniform Pa) elements of Permian conodonts reveal detailed and systematic chemical element distributions. The crown of the conodont element is more densely mineralized than the basal body and shows evidence of less dense mineralization in areas of rapid growth. Patterns in sodium and sulfur concentrations indicate oral to aboral differentiation within conodont elements. These chemical element patterns support oral exposure during life and functional use as a tooth, and they approximate the erupted and embedded positions of the conodont tooth when th

As assayed in Drosophila melanogaster, three of the elements were apparently nonfunctional, two were marginally functional, and one had moderate activity that could be greatly increased depending on the position of the element in the genome. The DNA replication origins of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae require several short functional elements, most of which are not conserved in sequence. ARS305 contains elements that are functionally exchangeable with ARS1 A and B1 elements, which are known to bind the origin recognition complex; however, the ARS1 A element differs in that it does not require a 3' box adjacent to the essential autonomously replicating sequence consensus. In this work, we have implemented an orbital-free density functional theory (OF-DFT) solver using the finite element method. In OF-DFT, the total ground state energy is minimized directly with respect to the electron density, rather than via orbitals like in the standard Kohn-Sham approach. For this to be possible, one needs an approximation of a universal density functional of the non-interacting kinetic energy. Presently available approximations allow for computation with very low computational expense, but which gives inaccurate energies. A stable OF-DFT code can be used as a testbed for ne

Background: The ubiquitous chromatin opening element (UCOE) derived from the human HNRPA2B1-CBX3 housekeeping gene locus (A2UCOE) is able to provide highly reproducible and stable expression even from transgenes integrated within extreme heterochromatic regions (such as centromeres). The A2UCOE consists of the methylation-free CpG island encompassing the dual divergently transcribed promoters of HNRPA2B1 and CBX3. The proposed mechanism of A2UCOE function is a two-component model: (i) an extended methylation-free CpG island and (ii) dual divergent transcription with an inherent chromatin openi
