Abstract:
A recent series of tapered roller bearing tests have been conducted at the University of Southampton to evaluate the effectiveness of using multiple sensing technologies to detect incipient faults. The test rig was instrumented with on-line sensors including vibration, temperature and electrostatic wear and oil-line debris sensors. Off-line techniques were also used such as debris analysis and bearing surface examination. The electrostatic sensors, in particular, have the potential to detect early decay of tribological contacts within rolling element bearings. These sensors have the unique abi

At a cognitive level of explanation, it has recently been hypothesized that individual differences in g is based in the executive functions of the frontal lobes. This theory can be contrasted with the theory that the fount of g is speed of information processing. The aim of this thesis was to test the idea that the two contrasting theories of g could be reconciled by invoking an alternative theory which suggests that there may be two g?s one related t

Abstract:
Matrices reasoning tests, which contain missing pieces in matrices that participants attempt to figure out, are one of the most popular types of tests to measure general intelligence. This thesis introduces several methods to develop matrices items, and presents them in different test forms to assess general intelligence. Part 1 introduces the development of a matrices test with reference to Carpenter’s five rules of Raven’s Progressive Matrices. The test items developed were administered together with the Standard Ravens’ Progressive Matrices (SPM). Results based on confirmatory factor analys

A useful approach to better understand the mechanisms underlying cognitive development has been that of constructive artificial neural networks (CANNs). This thesis presents several CANN models that contribute to our understanding of two typical and abnormal developmental phenomena. The first two manuscripts explore the mechanisms underlying false-belief (FB) task transitions. Typically-developing preschoolers go through two transitions on verbal FB tasks, in which they have to say where an agent will search to find (approach) or avoid (avoidance) an object that was moved from location A to loc

Abstract:
[EN] The stupefying success of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for specific problems, from recommender systems to self-driving cars, has not yet been matched with a similar progress in general AI systems, coping with a variety of problems. This dissertation deals with the long-standing problem of creating more general AI systems, through the analysis of their development and the evaluation of their cognitive abilities. Firstly, this thesis contributes with a general-purpose learning system that meets several desirable characteristics in terms of expressiveness, comprehensibility and versatility.

Abstract:
Stockholm Neonatal Project is a longitudinal population-based study of children born prematurely in 1988-93, with a very low birth weight (<1500 g), who have been followed prospectively from birth through adolescence. A matched control group was recruited at age 5 ½ years. The overall aim was to investigate long-term developmental outcome, paying particular attention to executive functions (EF) in relation to degree of prematurity, birth weight and medical risks. Design, production and development of individual mini/micro robots and then formation of their cooperative colony are the main topics of this thesis. The produced mini/micro robots are as small and light as possible. In addition, they are multifunctional (programmable), flexible and intelligent while maintaining a very low production cost. Mini/micro robots, called MinT-DB series are able to communicate with each other to work cooperatively. Moreover, these robots can be the basis for the future studies considering the application of artificial intelligence and modeling of live colonies in the

Scoring systems in medicine are not a new concept. There are examples from the early 1950s, from around the same time as the polio epidemic in Copenhagen resulted in the birth of modern Intensive Care. Many scores have subsequently been developed specifically for Intensive Care patients. The majority summarise the overall physiological state of the patient in a variety of different ways. In today’s data-driven society, also called the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Text and Data Mining (TDM) has become an essential tool in managing the booming Big Data in its different sizes and forms. It is also an inherent part of AI research using machine learning, where these techniques highly depend on datasets derived from TDM to self-learn and to make autonomous decisions. Through the lens of copyright and related rights, TDM may be used to train AI for the purpose of AI-driven creativity, where AI has already helped in actualizing paintings, compose music and to produce movie trailers.
