Linguists and philosophers of language have shown increasing interest in the expressions that refer to quantifiers: determiners like 'every' and 'many', in addition to determiner phrases like 'some king' and 'no cat'. This thesis addresses several puzzles where the way we understand quantifier expressions depends on features that go beyond standard truth conditional semantic meaning. One puzzle concerns the fact that it is often natural to understand 'Every king is in the yard' as being true if (say) all of the kings at the party are in the yard, even though the standard truth conditions predi

The Romanian language has a number of words and expressions that we do not find in the other Romance languages, but which are common to the languages of the Balkan linguistic unit, such as: Albanian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Turkish, Neo-Greek. The Turkish influence on the Romanian language must have its beginnings during the invasion of the Pecheneg barbarians, Cumans, Tatars, Avars, Hozars. Many words of Turkish origin are attested not only in Romanian, but also in other Balkan languages. Turkisms in the Balkan languages do not all have a common source, but originate from different languages of

Perceptron operators have been introduced to knowledge representation languages such as description logics in order to define concepts by listing features with associated weights and by giving a threshold. Semantically, an individual then belongs to such a concept if the weighted sum of the listed features it belongs to reaches that threshold. Such operators have been subsequently applied to cognitively-motivated modelling scenarios and to building bridges between learning and reasoning. However, they suffer from the basic limitation that they cannot consider the weight or number of role fille

There has recently been an increasing interest in declarative data analysis, where analytic tasks are specified using a logical language, and their implementation and optimisation are delegated to a general-purpose query engine. Existing declarative languages for data analysis can be formalised as variants of logic programming equipped with arithmetic function symbols and/or aggregation, and are typically undecidable. In prior work, the language of limit programs was proposed, which is sufficiently powerful to capture many analysis tasks and has decidable entailment problem. Rules in this lang

GDL-III, a description language for general game playing with imperfect information and introspection, supports the specification of epistemic games. These are characterised by rules that depend on the knowledge of players. GDL-III provides a simpler language for representing actions and knowledge than existing formalisms: domain descriptions require neither explicit axioms about the epistemic effects of actions, nor explicit specifications of accessibility relations. We develop a formal semantics for GDL-III and demonstrate that this language, despite its syntactic simplicity, is expressive e

Phraseology, being the most expressive part of the language system, accumulates and reflects real or imaginary situations as experiences of a nation, and reveals the peculiarities of the cultural and historical development of a nation. The article describes English polysemantic phraseological units denoting violent actions, and also examines aspects of the formation of these phraseological units, namely the prototypical situations as their source. The article analyzes the role of the components of phraseological units in the formation of their meanings related to the theme of «Violence».

English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. A global language communication is inherent in him. This language is also distinguished by a significant diversity of dialects and speech. It appeared in the early Middle Ages as the spoken language of the Anglo-Saxons. The formation of the British Empire and its expansion led to the widespread English language in Asia, Africa, North America and Australia. As a result, the Metropolitan language became the main communication language in the English colonies, and after independence it became State (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) and

Snomed CT is a widely used medical ontology which is formally expressed in a fragment of the Description Logic EL++. The underlying logics allow for expressive querying, yet make it costly to maintain and extend the ontology. Existing approaches for ontology generation mostly focus on learning superclass or subclass relations and therefore fail to be used to generate Snomed CT definitions. In this paper, we present an approach for the extraction of Snomed CT definitions from natural language texts, based on the distance relation extraction approach. Golog programs allow to model complex behaviour of agents by combining primitive actions defined in a Situation Calculus theory using imperative and non-deterministic programming language constructs. In general, verifying temporal properties of Golog programs is undecidable. One way to establish decidability is to restrict the logic used by the program to a Description Logic (DL), for which recently some complexity upper bounds for verification problem have been established. However, so far it was open whether these results are tight, and lightweight DLs such as EL have not been studied at all

Abstract:
As widely argued [HG97; Sat96], transitive roles play an important role in the adequate representation of aggregated objects: they allow these objects to be described by referring to their parts without specifying a level of decomposition. In [HG97], the Description Logic (DL) ALCHR+ is presented, which extends ALC with transitive roles and a role hierarchy. It is argued in [Sat98] that ALCHR+ is well-suited to the representation of aggregated objects in applications that require various part-whole relations to be distinguished, some of which are transitive. However, ALCHR+ allows neither the
