Abstract:
Employing the poststructuralist approach to language and literature as a methodology, the present article insists on the significance of the novel, Body Offering, in understanding the idea of giving in to literature through writing. The notion of giving in the novel unfolds with regard to two contexts: love and writing, which, in turn, problematizes not only the way in which giving is understood in the binary structure of giving and receiving, but also the representational function assigned to literature due to its appearance without voice. So, doing it highlights the openness to receive beyon

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to attempt to answer the following questions: Are people generous at work places? How often do we see people willing to share, when someone seeks knowledge from them without any expectation? What’s the point in having knowledge when somebody doesn’t share it? Then again, why do firms, reward employees to share their knowledge? ¬ ¬? Does sharing knowledge between people need a commercial acceptance or rewarding inspiration? In firms, people, who do not have relevant work-related knowledge, seek it from others. Thus, this implies that people can either share

Abstract:
Literature on the compensation hypothesis overwhelmingly concentrates on either the macro or micro level of the relationship between globalization and welfare spending. This paper explicitly addresses this shortcoming by using individual citizens and country-specific characteristics in a hierarchical model framework. We start by examining individual’s context-conditional reactions to actual economic globalization and welfare generosity; after which, we make the effect of actual economic globalization (welfare generosity) conditional on whether the individual is a globalization winner or loser.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines how Victorian fiction accommodated and abetted generosity's shift from a public to a private virtue in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Chapter One contextualizes the mid-nineteenth-century ideology of giving within gender and class relationships shaped by debates leading to the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. Joseph Townsend's Dissertation on the Poor Laws (1786) and the report of two assistant poor law commissioners (1833) frame the public debate concerning government giving and signal a cultural movement that was transforming generosity into a m

Full text
Abstract:
Heidi Chamberlin Giannini attends to a virtue that has been largely neglected in the philosophical and theological literature of the virtues—graciousness. Giannini argues that graciousness is a virtue in its own right, distinct from other related virtues such as generosity, humility, and modesty. She argues that the gracious person notices and responds in ways that undercut indications of relative standing when social cues threaten to cause discomfort by suggesting that someone is inferior to another. While distinct from divine grace, graciousness nevertheless reflects God’s grace and importantly contributes to a life of virtue.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 draws from secondary materials and literature to review the history and evolution of social health insurance in contemporary China (since 1949), providing the historical background and the economic context of China’s social health insurance expansion in the 2000s. It shows that throughout the history of contemporary China, social welfare was never considered a basic social right for citizens. Despite dramatic changes in the coverage and generosity of social health insurance across different developmental periods, the stratification of Chinese social health insurance is persistent and was reinforced during the social health insurance expansion between 1999 and 2011. Moreover, the economic transition and the diversification of regional economies in China constitute the economic context, in which the Chinese central and local leaders’ motivations for and differential responses to social health insurance expansion take shape.

Abstract:
Chapter 5 presents an account of the ritual of Qurbani that marks one of the two Eids celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It presents the sacrifice of cattle in Madanpur and Chishti and the values of redistribution and generosity that marked Islamic rituals. There is also a detailed account of other festivals, such as Muharram and Eid-ul-Fitr, to show how a relaxed, syncretic, and lived Islam in these villages has seen recent challenges by more reformist Islamic movements in the South Asia region and beyond. Animal sacrifice is analyzed in dialogue with a comparative anthropological literature in Islamic and non-Islamic contexts to explore themes of violence, human-animal economies, and the “collaborative survival” of humans and animals. The discussion also engages with the anthropology of ritual to explore the importance of violence and the sacred and the importance of the transcendent for the creation of desirable values in society.
