Abstract:
Male and female genital cutting are often similar social and moral undertakings in those societies where both are practised. Yet, they both vary widely in meanings and ritual practices in their many social contexts, and there are many societies where only males are circumcised or where neither gender is. Modifications to genitalia range widely in their risks of harm, which has recently begun to be seriously examined for males but that has been well known for females. In this article, we compare female and male genital cutting practices in Sudan, including questions about culture and religion,

AbstractIn Typhlonectes compressicaudus the female genital ducts consist of an oviduct and a uterus. A longitudinal groove runs parallel to the oviduct, instead of a funnel. It's only during the second year after birth that modifications in genital ducts prepare the reproductive cycle. In female adults, funnel and oviduct are provided with cilia as early as October. Glands are developing at the level of the oviduct in which we observe 3 types of cells. After the ovulation (at the end of April), these structures set in rest again. Two new species of Seira Lubbock 1869 are described and illustrated. The males of these species show modifications in the fore legs, probably associated with sexual courtship and/or mating behavior. Despite the similarity of the modifications of the two species, they are not otherwise similar. Thus the similarity is due to convergence rather than homology. These are the first records of sexual dimorphism other than genital openings in Entomobryidae.

Semen collection is an important component of conservation and animal husbandry. Semen quality is generally improved using voluntary collection methods, particularly artificial vaginas (AVs). Most commercially available AVs are tube-shaped with few species-specific design augmentations. As genitalia are highly variable across taxa, incorporating species-specific genital morphologies into AV designs may enhance collected semen quality. We compared dolphin semen quality using: (1) silicone bioinspired artificial vaginas (BAVs) that reflect the internal shape of dolphin vaginas, and (2) manual st

Spermatozoa experience a long and tough transit in male and female genital tracts before successful fertilization. Glycosylation helps spermatogenesis, epididymal maturation, passing through cervical mucus, avoiding killing of the female immunologic system, and shaking hands between sperm and egg. Changes in glycosylations along the transit ensure that the right things happen at the right time and place on spermatozoa. Aberrant glycosylations on spermatozoa will negatively affect their fertility. Thus, we developed a lectin array method to examine the glycocalyx of spermatozoa, which will help
