Abstract:
Currently there is no extended study that explicitly focuses on themagnitude, frequency and timing of glacial calving resulting from externalforces. Past studies have identified the size and timing of calving events butthe links between them and the external factors that cause them are stillmissing. Here I present a method to identify the size, time and frequency ofcalving events on the Rink Glacier in Greenland. Using time lapse imagesspaced 30 minutes apart of the calving front, coupled with weather and tidedata, I plan on identifying the main driving force for calving. Results showthat atmo

Abstract:
There has been increasing attention over the last decade to the potential effects of glacier retreat on downstream discharge and aquatic habitat. Of particular interest is the timing of "peak water," when the reduction in ice area associated with retreat begins to offset the increased rate of climatic warming-induced melt. This study examines streamflow variability downstream of Bridge Glacier, in the southern Coast Mountains of BC. The glacier currently calves into a proglacial lake, and has been retreating rapidly since 1991, when the terminus retreated into an over-deepened basin. Despite

This study was motivated by an interest in understanding the physical processes driving the thermal regime of an ice-contact proglacial lake, in the context of its influence on downstream water temperatures in the southern Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Field work was carried out at Bridge Glacier during the 2013 summer melt period, from June - September, focusing on quantifying the heat and water budgets and the thermal structure of the lake. The proglacial lake extending from the terminus of Bridge Glacier, informally referred to as `Bridge Lake', was approximately 5.9 km² and

Mass balance processes in glaciers are important for determining the growth or retreat of ice. Calving, the mechanical breakage of ice bergs from a glacier front, is a poorly understood phenomenon. This process has great importance to the mass balance of many glaciers, for example on Antarctica and in the Arctic. A recent paper by Åström et al. (2014) compare calving fronts to Self-Organized Critical (SOC) systems, especially the Abelian sand pile model, meaning that the calving front will stay at a critical state at all times. A fully automated method for detecting and measuring calving regions of a glacier is an important tool to gather massive statistical data of calving events. A new framework to achieve the goals is presented in this thesis. First, time-lapse images are registered to the first image in the set. Registration process makes use of the M-Estimator Sample Consensus (MSAC) method to estimate a transformation model that relates a pair of Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF). Then, the terminus of a glacier is separated from other objects by a semi-automatic Chan-vese level-set segmentation. After that, ca

Abstract:
Bridge Glacier is a lacustrine calving glacier located in the southern Coast Mountains and terminates in a 6.2 km² proglacial lake. The glacier has retreated more than 3.55 km up-valley since 1984, the majority of the retreat having occurred since 2003. While surface melt may have contributed to the retreat, calving allowed for an additional annual volume of ice loss. The relative contributions from surface melt and calving to the total volume of ice loss is examined for the 2013 melt season. Surface melt is quantified using on-glacier meteorological data to drive a distributed energy balance

Future sea level rise associated to global warming is one of the greatest societal and environmental challenges of tomorrow. A large part of the contribution comes from glaciers and ice sheets discharging ice and meltwater into the ocean and the recent worldwide increase is worrying. Future predictions of sea level rise try to encompass the complex processes of ice dynamics through glacier modelling but there are still large uncertainties due to the lack of observations or too coarse parameterisation, particularly for processes occurring at the glacier interfaces with the bed (sliding) and wit

Iceberg calving is an efficient ablation process which introduces mechanical instability to glacier systems and can cause non-linear climatic response. This thesis uses glaciological and limnological data to examine the relative contributions of calving and melting to mass loss at glacier termini, and the interplay between glaciological and limnological processes. Calving dynamics are investigated at two lake-terminating glaciers; Glaciar Leon in Chile and Fjallsjokull in Iceland. Numerous supraglacial and proglacial lakes have developed on debris-covered glaciers in conjunction with 20th-century retreat associated with global warming. When a glacier holds a substantial debris cover on its lower reach and/or is calving into a proglacial water body, the behaviour of its terminus can be modified to varying degrees compared to that of land-terminating or debris-free glaciers. The terminus is not just retreating from its frontal position but it is disintegrating through several processes that are linked. The loss of ice from the Greenland ice sheet is an important contributor to current and future sea level rise occurring due to ongoing changes in the global climate. A significant portion of this ice mass loss comes through the calving of large icebergs at Greenland’s many marine-terminating outlet glaciers. However, the dynamics of calving at these glaciers is currently not well understood, complicating projections of future behaviour of these glaciers and mass loss from the Greenland ice sheet.
