Abstract:
This study has attempted to explain the emergence and development of the socio-economic complexity detected in Dilmun material culture, particularly its seals, which emerged in the Gulf region c. 2100-1800 BCE. My research aims to present a regional perspective through emphasising the internal dynamic, or endogenous processes establishing Dilmun society. A new perspective is presented as the result of a reassessment of current theories of the relationships between suppliers and consumers in long distance trading networks which suggests important modifications to the models presented by Renfrew

Abstract:
Research into the depiction of cattle in Minoan Art ha'i concentrated on representations of interaction between men and cattle, in particular, the images of bull sports. This emphasis has detracted from other types of cattle imagery. In this thesis the representation of the cow and calf in Minoan glyptic is assessed. Discussion of representation and meaning are of equal value, as a full understanding of the potential meaning of an image is dependent upon a detailed knowledge of what is represented. Specific anatomical and behavioural details described in the images are therefore compared with

Abstract:
This thesis presents an analysis of glyptic motifs of a religious nature attested on the Greek mainland in the Late Helladic period and on Crete post Late Minoan IB. Its purpose is to ascertain to what extent such an analysis can, firstly, expand our knowledge of religious practices in the Late Bronze Age Aegean, and, secondly, elucidate the nature of the relationship between Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece. This was achieved through the classification and analysis of five glyptic themes generally regarded as possessing religious significance in scholarship. These are anthropomorphic figures

In Greater Mesopotamia during the fourth millennium BC, several technological developments, as well as entirely new inventions, occurred concomitantly with wide-ranging social changes. Hence, already in the last few centuries of the millennium, several societies were radically different from those preceding them. Of particular importance are aspects such as networks of exchange, urbanisation, organisation and objectification of the labour force, and the interrelated complex administrative practises; particularly writing and glyptic technologies. This allows for a novel way of viewing and identifying structures of meaning embedded in otherwise familiar evidence. A comprehensive synthesis of the archaeological evidence for the u

The study aims at tackling a problem of use of engraved gems for self-presentation and propaganda purposes in the Roman Republic and under Augustus. The most important observation about the gems in this dissertation is that they portray Roman society at each level. They are snapshots of people believes, ideologies, everyday life and thus, they might cast some light at propaganda actions performed by Roman political leaders and their factions in the past. Gems are plausible to show both, general trends in propaganda activities as well as individual and private acts of being involved in politics
