Abstract:
This dissertation is comprised of four studies that examine issues where submetered device-level energy use data can be used to inform energy efficiency policy and investment decision making in residential buildings. In addition to identifying applications and developing the methods for incorporating these data in engineering and economic analyses, the nontechnical aspects of these issues are also considered as implementation of these solutions depends on more than their technical feasibility. The first study frames the existing methods being used today to build a device-level accounting of wh

The properties of all-optical nonlinear waveguide devices are investigated. In particular, the nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) and nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (NLMZ) are analyzed using perturbation theory. The perturbation theory provides differential equations that describe the amplitude of the waveguide modes as a function of the propagation distance. To be practical, these waveguide devices require nonlinear phase shifts of π or more. Therefore, the theoretical investigation of these devices emphasizes their fabrication in bulk and multiple-quantum-well (MQW) gallium arsenide

Multi-mode filters use more than one resonant mode in a single cavity resonator, thereby reducing the size and weight of the filter. This is especially advantageous for satellite applications where the size and weight of the communications payload must be minimised. High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a promising technology for a variety of therapeutic applications. This concept initiated in 1942 by Lynn Zwemer [1]. HIFU has long been known as a minimal invasive or non-invasive procedure that destroys tissue through ablation. However, it is only in recent years that clinical applications are becoming feasible, with the development of high power ultrasound transducers compatible with the MRI scanner which is used to monitor these non-invasive HIFU applications.
