Abstract:
Objective: 2009 H1N1 influenza was first detected in the Northern Hemisphere in April 2009. National data have suggested that the novel influenza virus disproportionately causes severe illness in children and young adults, a somewhat different presentation from traditional seasonal flu which normally strikes hardest in the very young and older adults. This may or may not be the case in Virginia, which, if it is different, may suggest a need to alter flu prevention messages and vaccine policy as the outbreak continues through the fall 2009-10 influenza season. The swine-origin H1N1 influenza A pandemic virus (A(H1N1)pdm09) was detected in the human population in March 2009. Due to its antigenic novelty, the majority of individuals were susceptible to the virus and the pandemic quickly disseminated around the globe. Rapid characterization of the epidemic was required in order to help inform interventions and determine the risk posed to public health. Widespread sampling and sequencing of virus isolates enabled early characterization of the virus using phylogenetic analysis and continued surveillance over the subsequent three years of global circulati

Abstract:
The theme of my thesis is the issue of the new strain of influenza A (H1N1 Pandemic 2009) and the associated awareness of vaccination amongst the elderly. The work is divided into two parts, a theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, I tried to comprehensively process the available knowledge on the origins, epidemiology and prevention of influenza with particular emphasis on vaccination, oriented towards the elderly. The practical part is focused on mapping the awareness of the elderly of the issue of vaccination against influenza and analysis of results from a research explora

HA is the major viral surface glycoprotein that binds to specific sialylated glycan receptors in the respiratory tract and allows the virus to enter the cell. It has been recognized as the key antigen in the host immune response to influenza virus in both natural infection and vaccination. We have shown that HA with a single N-linked N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) at each glycosylation sites (monoglycosylated

In March and early April 2009, a novel influenza A virus H1N1 emerged in the United States and Mexico, which was named pandemic H1N1 2009 influenza A virus (2009 H1N1). Tracing its phylogeny, scientists found its genome was reassorted from human, avain and swine flu. The viral protein PB1-F2 is another translated product which ribosome possesses a leaky scanning when it is scanning on the open reading frame (ORF) of PB1. Its length is about 87~90 a.a. An influenza is an illness annually affecting 5-15 percent of the world population. During the influenza pandemy 40-50 percent of world population can be affected and millions of people can die.The measures resulting from the pandemic plans help to limit the influenza virus spreading, to reduce morbidity and mortality. In April 2009 the first cases of the flue pandemic caused by Pandemic A (H1N1) 2009 virus occurred on the American continent, in the Czech Republic there was the first case registered in May, in the Pilsen region in July. Based on these facts I decided to assess the pandemic pla

Because of the great change of antigenicity, the reassorted viruses have the potential to cause global pandemic such as 2009 pandemic H1N1. As the reports of the increase of human infection by the newly-reassorted swine influenza viruses subtype H3N2 carrying genes from 2009 pandemic H1N1 were observed, it is crucial to understand the antibody cross-reactivity between swin
