This research investigated the question of whether automatic or system-generated information classification methods can help humans better manage information. A series of four experiments were conducted; they investigated the usability (i.e., usefulness) of two automatic approaches to information classification, the concept space approach and a Kohonen-based SOM approach in the context of information retrieval. The concept space approach was evaluated in three different domains: Electronic Brainstorming (EBS) sessions, the Internet, and medical literature (the CancerLit collection). The Kohone

The development of computer systems in UK hospitals has in recent years been focused on the provision of hospital-wide information systems, known as Hospital Information Support Systems (HISS). This development has been motivated by National Health Service reforms and a realisation that earlier fragmented systems were not meeting the requirements of clinical and nursing staff in the most effective way. Such systems were often developed by external, centralised agencies using systems analysis techniques appropriate to the development of information systems in product orientated organisations. H

The modern hospice movement emerged in the 1960s as a grassroots social movement that attempted to restore an holistic and contextualised approach to the care of people at the end of life. This approach embraced the lived experience of the dying person at the centre of care across physical, emotional, social and spiritual domains of life. To achieve this, the care of dying people was largely removed from mainstream health care systems to promote more holistic and socially contextualised dying. In recent decades, the evolution of palliative care demonstrates the gradual return of palliative car

Abstract The number of internationally educated nurses (IENs) in Ontario is growing. Given the predicted nursing shortage due to an aging nursing workforce and a short supply of nursing graduates, this trend will probably continue as international recruitment to meet nursing demands in Canada continues. Current Canadian research that examines IENs’ experience as they integrate into their workplaces is scarce. With an increasingly diverse Canadian and patient population due to rising immigration trends, a workforce that addresses the needs of the diverse patient population is valuable. Therefor
