Abstract:
Annexins are a structurally related family of Ca2+ binding proteins of undertermined biological function. Annexin I (also called lipocortin 1) is a substrate for the EGF-stimulated tyrosine kinase and is postulated to be involved in mitogenic signal transduction. To investigate further the involvement of lipocortin 1 in cell proliferation, we measured lipocortin 1 levels in normal diploid human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF) to determine whether its expression changed as a function of growth status. For comparison, the expression of annexin V (also called endonexin II) was measured in HFF cells. E

High-fat feeding (HFF) is a well-accepted model for nutritionally-induced insulin resistance. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the metabolic responses of female lean Zucker rats provided regular chow (4% fat) or a high-fat chow (50% fat) for 15 wk. HFF rats spontaneously adjusted food intake so that daily caloric intake matched that of chow-fed (CF) controls. HFF animals consumed more ( P < 0.05) calories from fat (31.9 ± 1.2 vs. 2.4 ± 0.2 kcal/day) and had significantly greater final body weights (280 ± 10 vs. 250 ± 5 g) and total visceral fat (24 ± 3 vs. 10 ± 1 g). Human Foreskin Fibroblasts (HFF-1) and L6 muscle cells were treated in several conditions to examine the proliferation and adhesion of cells using different extracellular matrix proteins with different concentrations. The experiment was conducted and focused on how HFF-1 and L6 cells proliferate in two different conditions over a 7-day period and the results were recorded on Days 1, 3 & 7 (n=9). It is not generally known whether impaired stimulation of muscle glucose metabolism in insulin-resistant states is specific to insulin stimulation. Our aim was to examine whether glucose uptake responded normally to exercise and postexercise recovery in insulin-resistant high-fat-fed (HFF) rats. Three-week HFF or Chow-fed [control (Con)] adult rats were studied 5 days after cannulation. Before, during, or immediately after (recovery) 50 min of treadmill exercise, bolus 2-deoxy-[3H]glucose and [14C]glucose were administered to estimate muscle glucose uptake (R'g) and glycogen incorporation rate

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are a family of growth factors which includes twenty three proteins. FGFs work as modulators for various cellular activities like mitosis, differentiation and survival. Among the FGF family, human fibroblast growth factor-1 (hFGF-1), which is also known as acidic fibroblast growth factor, is a potent angiogenic agent, involved in the formation of new blood vessels in various tissues. hFGF-1 is regarded as a prototype of the FGF family. This procedure was developed, tested and patented by Aramco (U.S. Patent No. 11,235,427) as a reliable technique to assure the reliability and increase the confidence limits of the HFW pipe weld seam [3]. This patented procedure has the potential to be develo

Abstract The study reported here was performed with a view to understanding the effects of minor additions of Hf and Pt on the corrosion behavior of a model chromia former, Fe-25Cr. Bulk addition of Hf or Pt was made at 1 wt.% level to the base alloy, Fe-25 Cr, and the experimental alloys were made by an ingot metallurgy route. Coupons were machined from the as-cast rods or forged prismatic bars, and metallographically polished to 1 μ alumina. Multiple samples were exposed to an H2/H2S/H2O/Ar gas mixture at 700°C for times up to 192 hrs. Planar and cross-sections of scales formed on the substr

Abstract Corrosion rates for selected carbon steel piping circuits in a petroleum refinery HF (hydrofluoric) Alkylation unit were examined. The HF acid process environment was characterized as being one of three types: liquid HF acid (including saturated and condensing HF vapor services), superheated HF acid vapor, or HF acid dissolved in a hydrocarbon phase. Corrosion data, both from refinery inspection data and from available literature 1-3, was plotted using an Arrhenius type plot in which the logarithm of the corrosion rate is plotted versus the reciprocal of the absolute temperature. Abstract Increasing interest in utilizing hydrofluoric acid (HF) for acid stimulation of wells in the Gulf of Mexico to improve hydrocarbon productivity raised the question of acid chemical compatibility with existing offshore production system components, particularly riser titanium alloy stress joints (TSJs). A notable concern is elevated corrosion rates and possible absorption of by-product hydrogen on titanium components when exposed to even relatively dilute, cold or warm HF-containing solutions. Unfortunately, conventional film-forming/adsorption type organic inhibitors generally offer l

In addition to these model alloys, a cast alloy resembling the composition typically found in commercial platinum aluminide coatings was tested. Hot corrosion tests clearly demonstrated that Cr rather than Pt was the alloying addition needed to decidedly improve hot corrosion resistance of NiAl. Pt-containing alloys showed no improvement in hot corrosion resistance as compared to rapidly attacked Hf-doped NiAl. However, as litt

Abstract The effects of various pre-oxidation treatments on the Type II (i.e., 700°C) hot corrosion resistance of novel Pt+Hf-modified γ′-Ni3Al + γ-Ni alloys and coatings were studied and compared to a state-of-the-art Pt-modified β-NiAl coating. The pre-oxidation treatments were carried out in air and in Ar atmospheres at temperatures of 700, 1080, and 1100°C and for times of 1, 6, and 24h. It was found that pre-oxidation in air at higher temperatures and for a shorter period was quite beneficial in improving hot corrosion resistance of the Pt+Hf-modified γ′ + γ alloys and coatings. Over the years, there have been a few reported cases of cracking incidences. One resulted in a leak upon start up, after a planned shut down. The others were non-penetrating. Room temperature Charpy V-notch impact values of this alloy are significantly reduced once the material is subjected to service conditions. After cement production in Saudi Arabia surged in the first half of the 2010s due to the country’s rapid economic development, it has slowed measurably in recent years as economic growth has declined. This is shown in Figure 1, along with the evolution of the Kingdom’s real gross domestic income (RGDI). Still, it ranks among the top 10 countries for existing cement kiln capacity. The Saudi cement industry has relied on Arab Heavy crude oil, heavy fuel oil (HFO), and natural gas to produce clinker, a key cement ingredient.
