Hiatus hernia is an extramural factor in the integrity of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) complex. An incompetence of this complex is the crux in pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. This paper aims to study hiatus hernia and its association with erosive oesophagitis in Nigerian patients. It is a cross-sectional and retrospective study of patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy with diagnosis of hiatus hernia made at a referral endoscopy facility located in Port Harcourt metropolis, Niger delta region of Nigeria, from February 2014 to September 2019. Clinical history, questionnaire data and response to antisecretory therapy are insufficient to make a conclusive diagnosis of GERD in isolation, but are of value in determining need for further investigation. Conclusive evidence for reflux on oesophageal testing include advanced grade erosive oesophagitis (LA grades C and D), long-segment Barrett’s mucosa or peptic strictures on endoscopy or distal oesophageal acid exposure time (AET) >6% on ambulatory pH or pH-impedance monitoring. Background : Bariatric operations have variable range of complications and postoperative benefits. Gastroesophageal reflux is considered potential factor that may result in damage to the esophageal mucosa and this subject is quite controversial in the literature. Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) arises from contact of the esophageal epithelium with acidic gastric contents that significantly affects the patient’s quality of life. Hiatal hernia is one of the factors causing reflux. Hiatus hernia refers to condition in which elements of the abdominal cavity, most commonly the stomach, herniate through the oesophageal hiatus into the mediastinum. Hiatal hernia is a frequent finding during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Type I hiatal hernia is the sliding hiatal hernia, which accounts for more than 95% of a

The aim of this study was to analyze the data of endoscopy and symptoms in 118 Mexican patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), dyspepsia, non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and erosive esophagitis (EE). IBS criteria were fulfilling for dyspepsia patients in 47%, for NERD in 48%, and for EE patients in 48% of cases. Esophagitis was present in 42% of patients with IBS and in 45% of patients with dyspepsia. A higher prevalence of hiatus hernia was found in EE vs. NERD. At least one of the other two types of examination disclosed pathologic conditions in all but 2 of 53 patients.
