Mechanical devices that include home appliances, automobiles, and airplanes are typically driven by electric motors or combustion engines through gearboxes and other linkages. Airplane wings, for example, have hinged control surfaces such as ailerons. Now imagine a wing that has no hinged control surfaces or linkages but that instead bends or warps to assume an appropriate shape, like the wing of a bird. Such a device could be enabled using an electro-active polymer technology based on electronic artificial muscles. Artificial muscles act directly on a structure, like our leg muscles that are

In this chapter, I consider two case studies in environmental epidemiology of cancer, in service of several aims. First, I argue that while identification of mechanisms is useful, they are neither necessary nor sufficient to justify claims about causal regularities in epidemiology. Second, I argue that Hill’s list of considerations are not “criteria” for judging that X is a cause, but rather a set of guidelines and an argument for consideration of total evidence in conditions of uncertainty. Third, I argue that standards of evidence for establishing causation ought in part to hinge upon what w

The 1984 cost/benefit model for the evolution of carnivorous plants addresses their potential energetic and ecological advantages. It has provided a conceptual framework for research on distribution, variation in trap allocation and mechanisms, association with low rates of photosynthesis and whole-plant growth, and ecology of carnivorous plants relative to noncarnivorous ones. We re-assess this model, its potential extensions, and the validity of its assumptions and predictions. We review what is known about photosynthesis, respiration, relative growth rates, and resource allocation in carniv

Abstract:
This book critically examines the theoretical foundations and legal framework for macroprudential policy, its tools and governance in the UK, the US and the EU. It goes deeper into a normative discussion of the legitimacy of macroprudential policy in these jurisdictions, where the mandate for maintaining financial stability has been delegated to independent authorities. The Global Financial Crisis of 2007–2008 reopened debates regarding legitimacy of the independent regulatory state, given its democratic deficit. The response to a perceived legitimacy gap has been to increase political oversig

Abstract This book demonstrates that the so-called “lesser” decorative arts transformed the representational logic and the prose style of the novel in the late nineteenth century. It builds from William Morris’s statement that “All real art is ornamental,” acknowledging that ornament is the heart and end of the artistic gesture. The book grounds itself historically in theories and practices of decorative arts developed in the middle of the nineteenth century, a moment when Victorian designers overhauled the reigning principles of ornamentation. Developing a new canon of design theory, this stu

Abstract:
Abstract Christian Nationalism, Nation-Building, and the Making of the Holocaust in Slovakia exposes the crucial role of Christian nationalism in cultivating popular complicity and collaboration during the Holocaust. It does this by exploring how communal murder and betrayal intersected with nation-building in the newly independent Slovakia during World War II. The authority of the fascist regime centered in Bratislava hinged on appeasing not only Hitler but also civilian populations of the nation’s heterogenous eastern borderlands, especially local elites, such as priests, doctors, and teache
