AbstractAn understanding of the different microbial constellations or microbiomes, which every habitat and every organism harbor, will be the key to addressing many of the challenges humanity will face in the twenty-first century. Such comprehension could launch several innovations relating to natural and cultural capital, including historical and artistic heritage. In relation to cultural heritage, microorganisms are mainly known through their role as deteriogens, but the features creating damage can be exploited positively, attaining more sustainable restoration strategies, in accordance with the principles of compatibility and retreatability deriving from reflections on the Cultural Heritage inspired by the Charter of Venice (International charter for the Conservation and restoration of monument and sites (the Venice Chart 1964). In: ICOMOS, IInd International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments, 1964) onwards. In this article, we show a series of case studies, using both wild-type microorganisms and plant-based extracts, providing a comprehensive proof of concept of the feasibility of biotechnological solutions for a more sustainable restoration strategy, to replace the products in use which are often dangerous for operators, aggressive for works of art and no longer compatible with the environment. The overview of the case studies presented, many of which are still unpublished, responds to the need to go beyond the state of the art and has entirely sprung from suggestions by restorers, interested in learning about potential innovations and strongly determined to introduce non-toxic products in their daily work. In this perspective, the case studies dealt with two topics: bio-cleaning and disinfection. Noteworthy results were obtained on a platform of different types of artworks and different materials with compatible, harmless and selective products.

Emotions are relationship engagements that are dynamically and socioculturally constructed. Starting from the historic context in which the current research program originated, this chapter develops a theory in which cultural differences in emotion can be understood from the cultural context’s valued model of self and relating. It presents evidence for a “cultural logic” to emotion in the prevalence and content of emotion as well as to which experiences are associated with positive outcomes and well-being. Furthermore, it shows how a myriad of processes co-constitute the alignment of culture and emotion—processes that can be situated at the personal, interpersonal, and collective levels and that are highlighted when emotions are studied in acculturating individuals or biculturals. In concluding, this chapter presents a dynamic and sociocultural model of emotion in which people collectively construct their experiences in line with the prevalent meanings and practices of their sociocultural context.

The equilibrium theory of island biogeography (MacArthur and Wilson 1967) gives little attention to the human forces that have contributed to shape the biota of archipelagos. Most of the studies that have been done to test the theory, however, concentrated mostly on natural forces and less on the ancient influences of sea-faring cultures on island biodiversity. Although many biologists have followed MacArthur and Wilson’s lead by charting the natural processes shaping the island biogeography of the midriff islands in the Sea of Cortés (Soulé and Sloan 1966; Case and Cody 1983), the cultural dispersal of native plants and animals across the gulf has hardly been taken into account in these pattern analyses of the region’s biota. Nevertheless, new opportunities have emerged. Analyses made possible by novel genetic tools can now be combined with recent revelations of oral history from Seri Indian seafarers who have frequented the midriff islands and who know of their ancestors’ activities on the islands. Archaeologists have found indigenous remains on San Esteban, Ángel de la Guarda, San Lorenzo Norte and Sur, and Tiburón, with dateable occupation sequences on San Esteban for a minimum of 350 years (Bowen 2000). We can now begin to reconcile data from cultural geography, genetics, and biogeography to track cultural dispersal with new precision. A cohesive but curious story has begun to emerge from this unlikely partnership of genetic analyses performed in laboratories and oral history documentation in the field: historic seafarers of this arid region have carried with them flora and fauna that became established on islands other than those accessible by natural routes of dispersal (Grismer 1994; Petren and Case 1996, 1997; Nabhan in press). This should come as no surprise to scientists who read beyond their own area of interest: similar cultural dispersal dynamics have been documented in Polynesia and Melanesia (McKeown 1978; Fisher 1997; Austin 1999) and in Central America and the Caribbean (Bennett 1992; Case 1996). Factoring indigenous cultural dispersal into island biogeography has led to very different views of biotic origins and migrations than those offered by a purely biological perspective.

Storytelling is the most ancient form of teaching that can enhance the learning experience, and transmedia is a technique where elements of a story get dispersed across multiple media with each story creating a cohesive entertainment experience. The storytelling framework is a viable solution to engage a universal audience, and the socio-cultural theory of learning presented underpins how cultural beliefs and attitudes impact instruction and learning. The study explores how the pre-historic practice of transmedia storytelling can be used and practiced by educators. Narratives transverse across media and can be traced back to the presentation of Biblical stories. The Bible story has been told across many different forms of media, from print to icons to stained glass windows. Jesus, the master teacher, used storytelling methods of instruction to convey his message to his learners across different platforms. The chapter explores the parallels between Biblical transmedia and contemporary transmedia and considers transmedia edutainment as a pedagogical practice in higher education.

Chapter 9 seeks to apply what was learned at the Lewis Fishery and on Lewis Island to help solve social problems in this historic moment. It follows the trajectory Casey’s work starts, considering what place means in an era of large scale dis-placement through electronic technologies. The chapter argues that powerful forces in this rapidly changing digital age have brought on another era of anomie, including negative psychological symptoms similar to those that accompanied industrialism. In opposition to the myths of perpetual, technological, and material progress, a sustainability model is considered. Jonathan Hawke’s concepts of the “four pillars” of sustainability are applied to Lewis Island culture, using theory and community members’ interpretations, and focusing on cultural sustainability. Narrative stewardship is suggested as one strategy for staving off anomie, using of technologies while not losing the powers of community and place.

Although mental health service providers have focused on the effects of trauma and related interventions for decades, little is known about pervasive and historic trauma, particularly for socially marginalized individuals. Thus, clinical issues associated with sociopolitical oppression have been under-investigated. Coupled with the lack of sufficient cultural competence when working with diverse clients, mainstream clinicians frequently lack adequate case conceptualization skills and culturally sensitive interventions to assist clients from diverse backgrounds. Using traumatic stress as a framework for exploring evidence-based interventions to address long-term, pervasive marginalization and its psychological effects, the authors propose that mindfulness techniques are particularly beneficial to this client population. The authors reviewed culture-centered interventions to address traumatic stress for marginalized client populations, focusing on the mindfulness practice of Falun Gong. Recommendations for practice include the inclusion of traumatic stress theory and techniques in pre-service training, professional development training for practitioners focusing on mindfulness techniques with clients assessed with historical trauma, and Web-based training for clinical faculty to enhance their knowledge about traumatic stress, historical trauma, and associated interventions for clients from marginalized communities. The authors offer recommendations for future research that focuses on studies exploring the usefulness of Falun Gong in working with clients with traumatic stress.
