Synaptic transmission in the nervous system involves the activation of receptor proteins that permit rapid transmembrane fluxes of ions. Ionic gradients across the membrane determine the direction and driving force for the flow of ions and are therefore crucial in setting the properties of synaptic transmission. Le manque de compréhension des réactions liées à l'utilisation de l'ozone a constitué un clair frein au développement de séquences de blanchiment non-chlorées efficaces. Considéré comme un élément central des séquences TCF face aux séquences ECF comprenant du dioxyde de chlore, l'ozone ne permettait pas l'obtention de pâtes cellulosiques de qualité aussi élevée.
