Abstract:
The phenomena of Two-Phase Flow with large density ratio (about 1000:1) in porous media occurs in many environmental and industrial processes. This thesis aims to develop a numerical tool to simulate the Two-Phase Flow along curved solid boundaries with Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method. In addition, a modified Ghost Fluid Immersed Boundary (GFIB) model is proposed to capture the local interaction behaviour among fluids and curved boundaries. The code is first checked with the droplet test, capillary rise test, capillary bridge test and contact line dynamic test and all cases resulted in less than

The present thesis is a result of three year research study aimed at understanding the wettability effects on interface dynamics and phasechange. The project was performed in between University of Bergamo, University of Mons, CNR-ISTEC Institute of Science and Technology for Ceramics (Faenza, Italy), Politecnico di Milano and Italian Space Agency (ASI). The scope was to add a piece of the puzzle in understanding the basic physics knowledge on the wettability influence on: 1) pool boiling heat transfer; 2) liquid-surface interaction. This thesis describes the realization of a facility for the high-accuracy frequency dissemination on a continental scale. This project was developed at the Optics division of the Italian National Metrology Institute (INRIM), which is in charge of the realization and operation of the atomic primary frequency standards, of their dissemination, and cooperates to the International Atomic Time generation. Frequency dissemination is now based on satellite techniques; however, the resolution provided by these methods does not cope with the accuracy and stability of newgeneration frequency standards.

Abstract:
Heat generators are actually the most used system for producing domestic heat and hot water. These systems are most commonly fire tube heat generators, which consist in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger with the flue gases produced by a stationary combustion process flowing inside the tubes, and the secondary fluid, i.e. water, located in the shell. The first Chapter of this Thesis presents an experimental and theoretical analysis of the working conditions of a three pass fire tube heat generator, while operating both in stationary and transient regimes. In the literature, at the best of the au

Nowadays there is an increasing demand for compact devices with high performance in heating and cooling applications; a compact geometry permits to have a lower charge of refrigerant as compared to conventional HX. The present research activity is focused on the analysis of condensation phenomena inside a single minichannel and on the application of minichannels technology for condensers and evaporators in heating and cooling systems. When the inner diameter decreases, new parameters can influence in a significant way the two-phase heat transfer. Nowadays power

Abstract:
The objective of the present thesis is to provide a methodological approach for the design of responsive building envelope components through the application of optimisation analyses. In detail, this approach was applied to opaque building envelope components with Phase Change Materials (PCMs). Since multi-objective optimisation problems generally result in a series of trade-off solutions called Pareto-front, the main focus was to investigate which values assumed by the optimisation variables led to the optimal set of solutions. In this way, the optimisation analysis was used as a tool to gain

Abstract:
Production, consumption, and disposal of textile products have substantial adverse impacts on the environment, especially textiles with flame retardant (FR) finishes. Unfortunately, information on the exposure of FR from textile products to environmental pathways is scarce. Research works on FR textiles have been mostly focused on ways to provide environmentally friendly synthesis and production phases of FR textile products. However, the end-of-life phase of the FR textiles seems neglected and needs great attention when the product’s life cycle is concerned. The end-of-life phase of FR textil
