Abstract:
In ‘The Palestinian exile as writer’, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra gives a brief description of his suitcase that he carried over from his life in Palestine before the Nakba of 1948 to his life in Iraq thereafter. Reading his suitcase as a literary trope, I aim to unpack his suitcase and to re-vision, in fragments, what it contained. Qasr Serij lies near an old route running along the southern foot of the Jabal al-Qusayr between Mosul and Nisibis (cf. Wilkinson, 1990: 50–51, Route B; Wilkinson, 1993: 552). As the name suggests, the site comprises the partly standing remains of a church originally dedicated to St Sergius, a popular eastern saint (Fiey, 1961). It has been identified as the stone church said to have been founded between 559–75 by one Mar Ahudemmeh at a spot known as Ain Qenoye or Ain Qena (‘Spring of Reeds’) in the vicinity of Balad (Eski Mosul) (Fiey, 1958). AbstractThe gendered messages in the paintings and text of Dinet and Sliman's Life of Mohammad are the products of a fascinating social and cultural interchange that developed over three decades between the Frenchman and Algerian life. In this social and cultural context, Dinet produced his Orientalist paintings and collaborated with Ben Ibrahim on a series of illustrated books. At the same time, Dinet undertook a spiritual journey from Orientalist painter to Islamophile, formally converting in 1913. In this wonderful book, Nur Masalha challenges and transforms world history, as did his earlier Palestine: A Four Thousand Year History (2018). In this meditation I recount some of Nur Masalha's argument — not all, given the extraordinary richness of the material he has uncovered, described, and analysed — but also offer my own reflections prompted by his book. As Masalha relates in his introduction, the work is a passionate response to Zionism's historical claim that Palestinians possess no history of literacy, education, and literary culture. He shows the falsity of such a claim through mult

The syndrome is characterized by multiple skeletal deformities due to axial skeletal developmental defects during the embryologic stage. Generalized vertebral defects include fused, missing, or deformed vertebrae, and these are seen throughout the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. The patients have short stature and kyphoscoliosis. In pregnancy, these skeletal defects may have pronounced effects on the parturient and the baby, so special considerations are needed by the obstetricians as well as the obstetric a

The period between 1600 and 1800 included the measurement of magnetic declination, inclination and magnetic field strength. Before that time, there was only a little information available, such as how to use a compass, for example in the Kitab-i Bahriye (the Book of Navigation) by Piri Reis, one of the most important mariners of the Ottoman Empire. However, this may not mean that magnetic declination was generally understood. The first Turkish scientific book relating to terrestrial mag

Abstract Antiestrogen medication is the only chemoprevention currently available for women at a high risk of developing breast cancer; however, antiestrogen therapy requires years to achieve efficacy and has adverse side effects. Therefore, it is important to develop an efficacious chemoprevention strategy that requires only a short course of treatment. PIK3CA is commonly activated in breast atypical hyperplasia, the known precancerous precursor of breast cancer. Targeting PI3K signaling in these precancerous lesions may offer a new strategy for chemoprevention. Here, we first established a mo
