Malaria is a vector-borne infection caused by unicellular parasite of the genus Plasmodium. Plasmodia are obligate intracellular parasites that in humans after a clinically silent replication phase in the liver are able to infect and replicate within the erythrocytes. Four species (P.falciparum, P.malariae, P.ovale and P.vivax) are traditionally recognized as responsible of natural infection in human beings but the recent upsurge of P.knowlesi malaria in South-East Asia has led clinicians to consider it as the fifth human malaria parasite. Synopsis Like many scientific disciplines, the field of reproductive biology is subject to biases in terminology and research foci. For example, females are often described as coy and passive players in reproductive behaviors and are termed “promiscuous” if they engage in extra-pair copulations. Males on the other hand are viewed as actively holding territories and fighting with other males. Males are termed “multiply mating” if they mate with multiple females. Similarly, textbooks often illustrate meiosis as it occurs in males but not females. This edition of Integrative and Comparative Biolo

Introduction: Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are benign tumors, developing from neoplastic Schwann cells, that produce myelin sheath covering vestibular nerve fibers. The majority of these tumors are sporadic VS and very rarely they can be associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). VSs are usually characterized with slow growth rate, however some of them appear to have a cystic structure, grow more rapidly, can cause facial nerve palsy and brainstem compression. The molecular hallmark of both sporadic and NF-2 associated VS is the inactivation of supresor gene NF-2, also called merlin gene.

Biology in VIN: Viral Biomarkers to Predict Response to Treatment I Summary Vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is a condition of vulval skin that is often chronic in nature. The diagnosis is made histologically and can be delayed due to VINs variable clinical presentation. Frequently reported symptoms of pain and itching can be very distressing for patients. If left untreated, VIN has the potential to become malignant. The current standard treatment for VIN is surgical excision. Cancer cells preferentially metabolise glucose via aerobic glycolysis (the Warburg effect), which is less energy efficient in teens of ATP production compared to oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). MtDNA exists as multiple copies in cells and, often in cancer, there is co-existence of mutant and wild-type mtDNA. There is evidence for mitochondria to contribute towards the tumor biology of multiple myeloma (MM) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The mtDNA from both these cancer types

Abstract Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is estimated to be a factor in causing about 30-40% of total corrosion-related failures. This type of corrosion results from the formation of biofilms on metal surfaces. MIC monitoring thus requires a combination of microbiological, surface analytical and electrochemical techniques. Abstract:
Marine environments present unique challenges for protection due to their global commons nature. International treaties are important for providing a framework for cooperation among different nations and can concern various topics. This module serves to introduce international treaties for marine conservation and management as part of a four-module series on marine conservation (see other NCEP modules on MPAs, policy and conservation biology). The module reviews the basics of international environmental treaties including general principles and formation. A focus is given to covering a range o

Abstract:
The fruit surface (exocarp) is a unique tissue with multiple roles influencing fruit growth and development, disease susceptibility, crop yield, post-harvest treatments, shipping and storage quality, and food safety. Furthermore, highly visible exocarp traits are the consumer's first exposure to the fruit, serving to identify fruit type, variety, attractiveness, and market value. Cucurbit fruit, including the closely related Cucumis species, melon (C. melo) and cucumber (C. sativus), exhibit tremendous diversity for fruit surface properties that are not present in model species. Abstract:
Wildrice (Zizania palustris L.) is an annual aquatic emergent plant primarily distributed across portions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Canada. Wildrice requires narrow environmental conditions that vary throughout its life cycle. Environmental conditions required include water levels between 15 and 90 cm, slow flowing water, anaerobic soil, and circum-neutral pH. Wildrice production and abundance is most often limited by nitrogen availability. Both short- and long-term changes in local conditions impact distribution and abundance of wildrice at local and regional scales. Reported dec

i. List the original objectives, as defined in the approved proposal, and any revisions made at the beginning or during the course of project. Our objectives were: 1) develop state-of-the-art functional genomics tools for B. terrestris. These resources will be then used to: 2) characterize genes and molecular pathways that are associated with reproduction, 3) characterize genes and molecular pathways associated with specialization in foraging or nursing activities, and 4) determine the extent to which juvenile hormone (JH) is involved in the regulation of reproduction and division of labor. 5)
