Syzygium Gaertn. is the largest genus in the Myrtaceae family and is infamous in the tropics for its seeming lack of nonvariable characters for delimitation and its long-standing confusion with the large genus Eugenia L. which has resulted in a huge number of synonyms. Regional treatments of the African-Indian Ocean region (continental Africa, Madagascar and the Comoros Islands and the Mascarenes and the Seychelles), in which 66 species have so far been recognised, is presented here. This study investigates the emergence of Malaysia-India Maritime Security Cooperation (MIMSC) in response to traditional threats and non-traditional security threats at the Eastern Indian Ocean Region (EIOR). This thesis argues that although both Malaysia and India have identified the maritime significance of the EIOR to them, the common threat faced by them in that region, and have recognised the need for cooperation in maritime security, it appears at present that MIMSC in EIOR projects a lack of robustness in its engagement. Abstract:
The advent of environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding, a technique which characterises DNA shed by both aquatic and terrestrial organisms into their immediate surroundings, has considerable potential to rapidly identify complex species assemblages for biomonitoring purposes. There are few studies however, that have applied these technologies for aquatic surveying in Australia. This PhD thesis furthers the development and application of eDNA metabarcoding across a variety of aquatic ecosystems and spatial scales within Australia’s Indian Ocean region.

Tracked and inscribed across the centuries by traders, pilgrims and imperial competitors, the Indian Ocean is written into literature in English by Joseph Conrad, and later by selected novelists from the region. As this thesis suggests, the Indian Ocean is imagined as a space of littoral interconnections, nomadic cosmopolitanisms, ancient networks of trade and contemporary networks of cooperation and crime. This thesis considers selected fiction written in English from or about the Indian Ocean—from the particular culture around its shores, and about the interconnections among its port cities.
