Infections of the nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx, epiglottis, and larynx are termed upper respiratory tracts infections. These include acute coryza, pertussis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, epiglottitis, laryngitis, laryngotracheobronchitis, and influenza. Rhinoviruses and coronaviruses account for the majority of acute coryzal illnesses. Acute sinusitis (<4 weeks duration) is also usually viral in origin. About 70% of pharyngitis and tonsillitis cases are viral in etiology. Haemophilus influenzae (Type B) is responsible for most cases of epiglottitis. Acute laryngitis and laryngotra

Stridor is a high-pitched sound representing partially obstructed or turbulent flow in the airway. Stridor can be part of the inspiratory or expiratory phase, depending on the origin of the flow disturbance. This chapter reviews the etiology of stridor and its subtypes. It also focuses on two important pediatric disease states where stridor is a defining characteristic: epiglottitis and croup. Epiglottitis has emerged as an uncommon cause of pediatric airway compromise, with the widespread use of Haemophilus influenza type b vaccination. Croup continues to be a significant cause of stridor, an

Influenza is a highly infectious, acute illness which has affected humans and animals since ancient times. Influenza viruses form the Orthomyxoviridae family and are grouped into types A, B, and C on the basis of the antigenic nature of the internal nucleocapsid or the matrix protein. Infl uenza A viruses infect a large variety of animal species, including humans, pigs, horses, sea mammals, and birds, occasionally producing devastating pandemics in humans, such as in 1918 when it has been estimated that between 50–100 million deaths occurred worldwide. There are two important viral surface glyc

Research has demonstrated that informal guardians affect offender decision making in a variety of crime contexts. This chapter highlights what can be learned from empirical research about the way offenders perceive informal guardianship and how it affects criminal choices. Focusing specifically on studies that elucidate the offenders’ perspective on guardians, this chapter reviews what is known from studies on burglars, armed robbers, and sex offenders about how guardianship factors into their criminal decision making. Based on these offender accounts, the chapter reveals the patterns that eme
