Abstract:

The primary aim of this thesis is to ascertain GABABR mediated inhibition in different IN types containing the neurochemicals parvalbumin (PV), cholecystokinin (CCK) or somatostatin (SSt). Background: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants prevent serotonin (5-HT) uptake by the serotonin transporter (SERT). Since blood platelets express SERT, SSRIs may modify platelet function and the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the beneficial or adverse effects of SSRIs on arterial thrombosis are poorly characterised and detailed in vitro experimental data is limited. The SSRI citalopram is a racemate, the (S)-isomer being the more potent SERT inhibitor. Although citalopram has been shown to inhibit platelets in vitro, it is unclear whether this is mediated v

Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is responsible for dopamine catabolism in the brain and therefore is especially important in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). MAO–B inhibition provides symptomatic relief by indirectly elevating dopamine levels in the PD brain. PD is caused by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and the formation of proteinaceous structures in the brain. The cause of idiopathic PD is unknown, but one theory states that reactive oxygen species (ROS), partly derived from the catalytic cycle of MAO, may be to blame for damaging dopaminergic neurons. Abstract:
The calcineurin-NFATc signaling pathway is involved in many aspects of the development and function of the immune, neural, skeletal, cardiovascular and muscular system of vertebrates. Regulators of Calcineurin (RCAN) proteins constitute a family of endogenous regulators of calcineurin, which play an important role in the modulation of the calcineurin-NFATc pathway. Here, we identifiy a novel protein kinase CK2 dependent mechanism by which the CIC motif of RCAN proteins modulate the final signaling output of the pathway. Moreover, we show that the functional CIC motif of RCANs responsib
