It is well established that insurance contracts are contracts uberrimae fidei ("of the utmost good faith"). From this foundation derives the insured's duty to disclose facts material to the proposed risk. This duty is placed upon the insured because s/he normally has the best knowledge of facts material to assessing the risk. In New Zealand today, whether a fact is "material" (and therefore needs to be disclosed) is based upon the view a "prudent insurer" would take of it. While the insured will usually know the all of the facts relevant to an assessment of the risk, s/he will often not know w

ABSTRACTIn this paper, the optimal insurance design is studied from the perspective of an insured, who faces an insurable risk and a background risk. For the reduction of ex post moral hazard, alternative insurance contracts are asked to satisfy the principle of indemnity and the incentive-compatible condition. As in the literature, it is assumed that the insurer calculates the insurance premium solely on the basis of the expected indemnity. When the insured has a general mean-variance preference, an explicit form of optimal insurance is derived explicitly. It is found that the stochastic depe

This technical paper provides us with an in-depth explanation of how losses due to catastrophes are insured and who absorbs the costs of compensating the insured assets. In the absence of an effective insurance market, the government often becomes the de facto financier of postdisaster rehabilitation efforts. Alternatively, governments can encourage the local insurance industry to engage in risk financing arrangements through insurance pools that, in turn, may cover higher exposures in the global reinsurance and capital markets. This study takes a closer look at how this type of international

Rising interest rates have prompted concerns about losses on bank assets, especially following the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in March 2023. In this working paper, we examine whether US credit unions could be subject to similar losses as banks and analyze how their regulatory capital would be affected. We estimate that after realizing losses from assets that have decreased in value and not yet been sold the overall net worth of the credit union industry would have fallen by 40 percent in 2023:Q1. Unrealized losses were most severe at the largest credit unions. Nonetheless, the bulk o

Federal crop insurance provides a financial safety net for farmers against insured perils such as drought, heat, and freeze. In 2016 over $100 billion dollars of crops were insured through the Federal crop insurance program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Risk Management Agency. In this white paper, we analyze publicly-available Federal crop insurance data to understand how weather and climate-related perils, or causes of loss (COL), change over time and spatial areas. We find that over 75% of all weather/climate-related indemnities (i.e., crop losses) from 2001 to 2016 are

In this paper, we explore the climate risk exposure of U.S. life insurers’ commercial mortgage loan portfolios, focusing on sea level rise (SLR) and flood risks. Commercial mortgages are an important asset class of life insurers: Approximately 15% of the life insurance industry asset is held in commercial mortgages. Life insurers are also important institutional investors in the commercial real estate (CRE) market. They hold approximately 14% of the outstanding CRE mortgage loans and are the third-largest institutional lenders in the U.S. commercial mortgage market. Life insurers are exposed t

Among these are risk-adjusted return, liquidity, diversification, and duration matching. Increasingly, insurer-investors are also seeking social impact.
