According to Treisman (Treisman and Schmidt, 1982) feature detection occurs in parallel, while the correct integration of detected features into an object requires focal attention. She has proposed that in the absence of attention, subjects will perceive "illusory conjunctions", or invented objects constructed out of features actually present in a display. This paper describes a study involving the integration of mathematics and music applied to improve senior secondary students’ understanding of the concept of function. The study has used the framework of the post-positivist paradigm, action research design, multiple research methods, experimental- and control-groups, pre-test and post-test, and has considered nine author-developed analogies between mathematics and music. The findings suggest that integration of mathematics and music makes a statistically significant difference in students’ understanding of function.
