The present study investigates invitation speech act strategies employed by Iraqi Arabs in the Iraqi Arabic dialect. A modified version of an open-ended Written Discourse Completion Task was used to collect data from three situations in which the participants were to invite lower-status interlocutors with close, familiar, and distant social distance. Based on Garca's (2008) classification of invitation strategies as head acts and supportive moves, the obtained data were analyzed descriptively. Abstract:

Shatt al-Arab River is the only international navigational river in Iraq, extending from the city of Qurna to its mouth in the Arabian Gulf at the city of Al-Fao within the governorate of Basrah for a length of approximately 204 km. Its width ranges from 400 m to 2000 m and its depth ranges from 8 m to 20 m.
