In this thesis I examine the politics of victimhood among Chagossians in Mauritius, who were displaced from the Chagos Archipelago in the 1960s and early 1970s to make way for a US military base on Diego Garcia. The Chagossian case study calls for modification of several aspects of recent anthropological theories on displacement and the politics of victimhood. First, previous ethnographies of displacement have focused on relationships within displaced ‘communities’ and have only tangentially seen displaced people as political actors. Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between Islam and political culture in Pakistan in the four decades following its naissance. It assesses the validity of the argument that a polarity has emerged in the Pakistani political culture, consisting of Islamism and Islamic modernism. In the case of Pakistan, Islamism refers to the use of the primary sources of Islam law, the Qur'an, hadith, and sunnah, in crafting both policy and political institutions. This thesis deals with the crisis of political loyalty in Somalia. The analysis is based on an elitist perspective which permits a more satisfactory integration of all levels of Somali society than is possible with familiar "clanist" or "social theory" interpretations.
