Abstract:
This chapter details the Ba’thist regime’s conflict with Iraqi Islamists during the 1980s. It highlights the insights provided by Iraqi intelligence reports. In doing so, it shows that the regime confronted a wide-scale uprising in the late 1970s and early 1980s, mostly among Shi’i Islamists and the Da’wa Party. However, the regime did also face threats from Sunni Islamists such as the Muslim Brotherhood. Membership in any political organization other than the Ba‘th Party necessarily resulted in harsh regime responses. In the middle years of the 1980s, the regime felt it had established contro

The Anarchical Society with its state-centric conceptualization of world politics may appear ill equipped to account for the increasing influence of non-state actors. However, despite this state-centrism, this chapter argues that Bull’s concept of international society constitutes a useful interpretative framework to account for the discourse and practice of such actors. The essay focuses on the organization Islamic State, which offers an example of how a non-state armed actor can challenge and confront international society, while at the same time engage with and mimic its discursive and mate

Abstract:
This book, using contemporary history and original empirical research, updates traditional rentier state theory, which largely fails to account for the existence of Islamist movements, by demonstrating the political capital held by Muslim Brotherhood affiliates in Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). While rentier state theory predicts that citizens of such states will form opposition blocs only when their stake in rent income is threatened, this book demonstrates that ideology, rather than rent, has motivated the formation of independent Islamist movements in the wealthiest stat

Abstract:
What drives Islamist groups to shift between nonviolent and violent tactics? When do groups move away from armed action, and why do some organizations renounce violence permanently, while others only place it on hold temporarily? The Violence Pendulum answers these questions and offers a theory of tactical change that explains both escalation and de-escalation. The analysis traces the historical evolution of four key Islamist groups: the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya in Egypt, and Darul Islam and Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia. Drawing on a wide variety of archival materials, in
