Abstract During his 1528 sojourn in Gwalior, the first Mughal emperor, Babur (r. 1526–1530), encountered numerous colossal Digambara Jain Tirthankaras fashioned from outcrops in the Urvai valley. He recounts in his memoirs how he ordered the naked “idols” destroyed. While this famed episode of iconoclasm in the Bāburnāma is well known to scholars, three paintings portraying Babur's trip to Gwalior that survive from the multiple illustrated manuscripts commissioned by Babur's grandson Akbar (r. 1556–1605) have eluded close examination. Color is of great importance in our India, without color, there is no basis for any object, person, color really tells us the nature of each other. The color or color refers to the color of the substance, red, yellow, blue. Depending on the combination of these, several distinctions of varna can be made. India is a religious country with different beliefs. Manuscripts have a special relationship with religion. Manuscripts are the best means of salvation for our teachers. One of them is the illustrated Jain manuscript Adipuran. The manuscript, which has been composed by Acharya Pushpadanta, dep

This paper explores the integral role of drawing and painting in Indian religious art as expressions of devotion and spirituality. Indian art is deeply interwoven with religious traditions, where visual forms transcend aesthetic value to serve as tools of worship, instruction, and divine presence. Focusing on their use in temples, festivals, and rituals, this research highlights how paintings and drawings, from intricate temple murals to ephemeral ritual designs like kolam and alpana, convey religious narratives, invite divine blessings, and cultivate spiritual consciousness.

This paper explores the historical and iconographic evolution of Jainism in Madhya Pradesh from its inception around the 6th century BCE to the medieval period. Jainism, which emphasizes non-violence and universal compassion, developed in response to the ritualistic and hierarchical Vedic traditions. Archaeological evidence of Jainism`s early presence in Madhya Pradesh is sparse, with notable findings from the Gupta period onwards. Key discoveries include inscribed Tirthankara images from Vidisha, illustrating the spread and development of Jain art. During the Gupta era, Deogarh emerged as a s

We clearly show that the symplectic structures deformations lead, upon quantization, to quantum theories of noncommutative fields. Two variants of deformations are considered. The quantization is performed and the modes expansions of the quantum fields are derived. The Hamiltonians are given and the degeneracies lifting induced by the deformation is also discussed. As an illustration, we consider the noncommutative chiral boson fields in the context of fractional quantum Hall effect. A generalized fractional filling factor is derived and shown to reproduce the Jain Hall states. We also show th

In this article we propose a method that can deal with certain combinatorial reinforcement learning tasks. We demonstrate the approach in the popular Ms. Pac-Man game. We define a set of high-level observation and action modules, from which rule-based policies are constructed automatically. In these policies, actions are temporally extended, and may work concurrently. The policy of the agent is encoded by a compact decision list. The components of the list are selected from a large pool of rules, which can be either hand-crafted or generated automatically. A suitable selection of rules is lear

Abstract This chapter discusses one of the earliest printers whose business model was predicated on publishing in multiple languages: Jan van Doesborch (d. 1536) was based in Antwerp for most of his life, but also spent a few years in London. His connections with English printers can be evidenced by the matter he printed, including translations from Dutch into English and ones from English into Dutch, and by woodcut illustrations recycled by English printers. Both types of evidence point to the transnationalism of Doesborch’s business operations: he was the Elsevier of the early 16th century.

A devastating prison epidemic broke out in Thayetmyo jail in Lower Burma in the summer of 1881, resulting in the deaths of over one-hundred inmates. The event could be justifiably described as a failure of colonial bio-politics and the state’s use of Western medicine to preserve the lives of those under its care. Certainly all the medical interventions made to arrest the spread of the deadly disease were ineffective. Even diagnosis remained disputed. However, this episode also reveals the centrality of medical knowledge and practice to how colonial officials performed and enacted the state. Th
