Abstract:
The avifauna of Rottnest Island, W.A., has been surveyed four times between 1904 and 1983: by Lawson in 1904, Glauert (1928), Storr between 1953 and 1962, and ourselves between 1981 and 1983. There were three recorded extinctions and 10 immigrations in the 79-year period, but none of the extinctions and only three of the immigrations could be regarded as valid for calculating natural turnover rates. The remainder had been influenced by human activity; therefore the avifauna extinction rate for Rottnest Island was 0, the immigration rate was 0.04% per year for non-marine species of bird and the

One new species and three new distribution records for the family Crangonidae (Crustacea: Decapoda) are reported from Western Australia. A new species, Philocheras gardenensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on specimens collected from the Western Australia. The new species closely resembles Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816), but can be distinguished easily by the absence of lobe-like folds on either side of the middle line of the carapace, the presence of a lateral carina extending from the branchiostegal spine, the longer middorsal carina and distolateral tooth of the antennal

This study explores the notion of fiqh al-aqalliyat (minority jurisprudence) in Western societies with a focus on Australian Muslims. It argues that, despite enabling Western Muslims to formulate a contextspecific jurisprudence to their newly adopted homelands, fiqh alaqalliyat remains fiercely debated in Islamic studies. Critics of minority fiqh reveal several contention points relating to its lack of applicability in certain social and political contexts; exploitation of legal maxims relating to easing hardship for Muslims; and its overly integrationist mentality. Until recently, the rare crangonid genus Vercoia had been known from three specimens of the only species, V. gibbosa Baker, 1904, collected from South Australia and the Marshall Is. Additional records of three further specimens from South Australia and Queensland are provided in this study, as well as a redescription of the species, based on the holotype and four other specimens. Only females and juveniles of this species are known. The immature females differ from the ovigerous ones in the development of median-sternal structures on the thorax and abdomen. The genus Lanocira Hansen, 1890 is recorded from the southwestern Pacific for the first time. Lanocira grebarree sp. nov. from the Great Barrier Reef is described, and Lanocira gardineri Stebbing, 1904 and Lanocira sp. cf. anasicula Jones, 1982 are recorded from the Great Barrier Reef and Hibernia Reef, in the Timor Sea off Western Australia, respectively. Lanocira grebarree sp. nov. can be identified by the anteriorly rounded, upturned and short rostral process in males in combination with the lack of stiff setae on the dorsal surface of the pleotelson. Over the past 15 years, 47 Muslim Australians have been convicted for terrorism offences. Australian courts have determined that these acts were motivated by the offenders’ “Islamic” religious beliefs and that interpretations of Quranic verses concerning jihad, in relation to shariah, caliphate, will of God and religious duty contributed to the commission of these crimes. This paper argues that these ideas, derived from certain classical-era Islamic jurisprudence and modern Islamist thought, contradict other classical-era interpretations and, arguably, the original teachings of Islam in the ti

Abstract:
This doctoral creative thesis comprises a novel This town, last town, next town, and an accompanying exegesis. The novel is set in Western Australia in the 1950s in sideshow alley, a unique part of Australian culture that has not previously been represented in Australian fiction. It is a period in which the sideshow is coming to the end of its heyday as a place of carnival and spectacle. The three main characters are: Joan Tiernan, a dancer and married to the owner of an entertainment show; Rose Jackson, the wife of a boxing tent owner; and Corrie Cooper, married to an Aboriginal boxer.

As an artist and musician, ‘place’ has always been entwined in my creative work and thinking. This arts-based autoethnography (Manovski, 2014), and music-based research (Leavy, 2015) draws deep connections between being an artist, researcher and educator in relation to the conceptual and physical local landscapes I move through. Situated in local places this research explores the dynamic overlaps (Yunkaporta, 2009) found across cultures, places, time and space. In response to this sense of place this thesis presents an intertextual artistic and scholarly celebration of this Wurundjeri l

Abstract This book originates in a sense of puzzlement often experienced by scholars interested in jurisprudence. On the one hand, jurisprudence deals with abstract questions concerning the nature, structure, and distinctive features of law. Questions such as these are not system-specific: when jurisprudents theorize about such topics as nature of legal norms, the legal system, legal reasoning, and interpretation, they aim at producing a theory that is true of all possible legal norms—and not those that happen to be in force in some particular legal system. On the other, though, jurisprudents

The United States Bill of Rights was groundbreaking in providing constitutional recognition to freedom of speech. In the past century the Supreme Court has decided hundreds of cases concerning free speech, providing an established system of jurisprudence to analyze free speech cases. This book explains the development in the US case law and compares it to developments in similar jurisdictions such as Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, and Europe. Abstract This chapter examines the ontological foundations of international law and their impact on Indigenous peoples, with a particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. It argues that international law’s concepts of sovereignty, civilization, nature, and rights are grounded in a distinctly Western, modernist ontology that has been used to justify colonialism and environmental exploitation. This ontological framework contrasts with many Indigenous ontologies, which tend to emphasize relationality, reciprocity, and obligations to Country. The chapter explore
