My experience teaching in Virginia schools, pacing and aligning instruction to the Virginia Standards of Learning, caused me to recognize the need for a mathematics tool to simplify and transition K-3 mathematics vocabulary usage and instruction. The language of mathematics uses three linguistic tools: words, symbols, and diagrams. Within this thesis I developed an instructional tool, a "Mathematics Pictionary", to accommodate primary grades K-3 and transition mathematical language and vocabulary skills between the primary grades aligned to the instruction and guidelines of the Virginia Standa

This study aimed to describe the nature of teaching English as a second language in Grade 3 to inform language instruction. Pragmatism guided the study with Differentiated Instruction as the theoretical framework. A comparative case study, based on an embedded mixed method design, was used to observe three teachers in two remote primary schools. Qualitative data included non-participative classroom observations, face-to-face semi-structured interviews, and selected documents. Supportive quantitative data was collected by means of the Classroom Observation Schedule-Revised (CLOS-R) to det

English language learners (ELLs) at a public elementary school in the southeastern United States had not been passing state tests on literacy. Researchers have found that teachers must be adequately prepared to use instructional practices in mainstream classrooms to help ELLs increase language acquisition and pass state tests in literacy. The purpose of this case study was to examine the experiences of Grade 3 literacy teachers teaching ELLs in a mainstream classroom at the study elementary school in order to understand their instructional challenges. The conceptual framework was based on Band

Ovarian cancer is the most common cause of gynecologic cancer death in the United States. Despite aggressive surgical cytoreduction and chemotherapy, ovarian cancer remains one of the most lethal cancer types due to advanced stages at diagnosis and lack of effective systemic therapy. High-grade serous ovarian cancers (HGSOC) are characterized by widespread recurrent regions of copy number gain and loss. Here we interrogated 50 genes that are recurrently amplified in HGSOC and essential for cancer proliferation and survival in ovarian cancer cell lines. FRS2 is one of the 50 genes located on ch

AbstractU.S. schools are diverse due to an increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners. Researchers recommend using culturally responsive teaching (CRT) that connects race and literacy, culture, and language with CLD learners. If K-3 teachers do not use CRT practices, CLD students’ English proficiency will be delayed, which may negatively influence self-esteem, academic achievement, social skills, and mobility through society. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore Title1 K-3 primary and resource teachers’ perspectives of CRT practices used wit
