Abstract:
Revenue management is a thoroughly researched field of study and it is widely used in several different industries. The Revenue Management Department at the airline SAS (Scandinavian Airline System) serves to maximise the profit of the company’s flights. At their disposal they have a number of tools, which use KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) as a measurement. The KPIs are used in prognosis to determine future initiatives, and to analyse and verify results. SAS does not know if the KPIs they focus on to measure performance are the most relevant for optimisation of revenue for their flights. In an attempt to simplify the use of SAS’ optimisation system we have performed a correlation analysis on a set of selected KPIs and assessed the influence relationships between these KPIs, in order to identify pivotal KPIs. Furthermore, we have researched origindestination control and the network effect to broaden the scope of the investigation. We have presented the work and the results in this thesis. The correlation analysis was performed using data, spanning a two-year period, for domestic flights (within Sweden) provided by SAS. The results of the analysis showed that the assessed KPIs could be divided into three groups; within each group the KPIs are closely correlated. As a result, we concluded that to focus on one KPI in each group should be adequate for evaluating performance. The three pivotal KPIs are revenue passenger kilometre, cabin factor and revenue per available seat kilometre. We have recommended SAS to continue working with origin-destination control and that the pivotal KPIs should be used as a measurement for the network, as well as measurements such as net leg revenue. Additionally, we have suggested that SAS conducts equivalent or similar analyses in other suitable areas to identify or confirm pivotal KPIs.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-87).
Non-profit humanitarian relief organizations have typically been unable to measure the performance of their supply chains due to an inability to centrally capture data from operations. With the recent development and implementation of information technology systems that can support the logistics function of these organizations, the data is now available to measure performance, but what is still lacking is a central framework of metrics that measures performance according to the organization's strategic goals. First, this thesis reviews the best practices noted in performance measurement systems of the logistics functions in military and commercial organizations and applies them to the humanitarian sector. Second, the thesis suggests a framework of key performance indicators to be implemented in an international non-profit humanitarian organization based on the unique strategic goals of the sector. The thesis then applies this proposed framework to two actual operations performed by this organization.
(cont.) The analysis performed herein proves that a measurement system would help strengthen the organization's ability to deliver goods to beneficiaries more efficiently and effectively. Finally, the thesis addresses feasibility issues of implementing a measurement system in the non-profit sector and also describes the next steps of opportunities related to measurement systems within humanitarian logistics.

Krishnapillai, Alagesan. "Understanding key performance indicators through driver measures." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28321.

Full text
Abstract:
Performance management is a vital part of every organization for its success and long term survival in the current competitive global market place. An organization needs a sound performance management framework to analyze its data to make strategic and tactical decisions. The weaknesses in today's performance management frameworks are linked to their inability to integrate strategy formulation with implementation. In our thesis, we introduce D river Measure Models that can define cause-and-effect relationship between d river measures and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for effective performance management and strategic alignment. Driver Measure Models make the performance management more dynamic as the operational activities are linked to strategies. Another contribution of the thesis is the identification of mathematical techniques to quantify relationships between KPIs and driver measures. Thesis makes an effort to show how mathematical techniques can be used for planning and forecasting outcomes while changing strategies. After conducting analysis using the mathematical techniques, organization can arrive at a set of operational tasks associated to driver measures which need to be executed to achieve its optimal result. Finally, we identified the essential set of criteria that a performance management framework needs to address through a literature survey and a gap analysis of existing frameworks. We created an extension to the Balanced Scorecard framework based on Driver Measure Models and support for the management of external factors to address these criteria and compared it to existing frameworks using a case study.

McGill, Susan. "NETWORK PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT USING APPLICATION-CENTRIC KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4055.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet and intranets are viewed as capable of supplying "Anything, Anywhere, Anytime" and e-commerce, e-government, e-community, and military C4I are now deploying many and varied applications to serve their needs. Network management is currently centralized in operations centers. To assure customer satisfaction with the network performance they typically plan, configure and monitor the network devices to insure an excess of bandwidth, that is overprovision. If this proves uneconomical or if complex and poorly understood interactions of equipment, protocols and application traffic degrade performance creating customer dissatisfaction, another more application-centric, way of managing the network will be needed. This research investigates a new qualitative class of network performance measures derived from the current quantitative metrics known as quality of service (QOS) parameters. The proposed class of qualitative indicators focuses on utilizing current network performance measures (QOS values) to derive abstract quality of experience (QOE) indicators by application class. These measures may provide a more user or application-centric means of assessing network performance even when some individual QOS parameters approach or exceed specified levels. The mathematics of functional analysis suggests treating QOS performance values as a vector, and, by mapping the degradation of the application performance to a characteristic lp-norm curve, a qualitative QOE value (good/poor) can be calculated for each application class. A similar procedure could calculate a QOE node value (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) to represent the service level of the switch or router for the current mix of application traffic. To demonstrate the utility of this approach a discrete event simulation (DES) test-bed, in the OPNET telecommunications simulation environment, was created modeling the topology and traffic of three semi-autonomous networks connected by a backbone. Scenarios, designed to degrade performance by under-provisioning links or nodes, are run to evaluate QOE for an access network. The application classes and traffic load are held constant. Future research would include refinement of the mathematics, many additional simulations and scenarios varying other independent variables. Finally collaboration with researchers in areas as diverse as human computer interaction (HCI), software engineering, teletraffic engineering, and network management will enhance the concepts modeled.

Abstract:

Sewry, Nicola. "Key performance indicators and predictors in Varsity Cup rugby." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13267.

Full text
Abstract:
Rugby union is a popular sport worldwide, and due to the professional nature of the sport the demands on players continues to increase, resulting in acute and chronic fatigue. The aims of the study were to investigate the tools used to monitor and predict changes in training status and determine the effectiveness of these to: (i) measure the subjective nature of coaches and their selection relating to the players’ performance, and (ii) to use performance indicators to correlate to team performance. The University of Cape Town Rugby Varsity Cup Team (First XV squad) were monitored from their pre-pre-season until the end of their competitive season. Players completed a testing battery (anthropometry, strength, muscular endurance, speed and aerobic fitness) during the season, along with Rating of Perceived Exertion and body mass was recorded every practice. Players also completed the HIMs test (measure of heart rate recovery) weekly. Coaches rated players every practice on three variables and the matches were recorded and video analysis performed to determine key performance variables. Most of the players improved in their testing battery between pre-pre-season and pre-season. Average session load varied across the phases of the season and was highest in the pre-preseason. Change in load however, was not reflected by changes in heart rate recovery which remained relatively stable across the season. The players’ body mass varied throughout the tournament, with certain players having a larger coefficient of variation compared to others. There was no relationship between performance in the testing battery and selection for matches. The coaches all had different ratings for the players, with no correlation between players selected and those not selected. There was a correlation between the subjective rating of players in the week leading up to the match and the match ratings of Coach 3 (head coach). The Varsity Cup rugby union players followed similar trends described in previous literature in physiological testing batteries, training loads and player management. The novel aspect of this study was the collection of data from the coaches involved. This qualitative data provides insight into the coaches’ selection process or lack thereof within a team environment. The data also illustrates the differences between the coaches’ interpretation of the players’ “performance”. The Varsity Cup is a relatively young tournament and should be further investigated to properly understand the differences between it and professional and amateur rugby union.

Abstract:
The following thesis work has been carried out as a case study at BillerudKorsnäs together with a literature study which has given rise to the theoretical frame of reference which fundamentally laid the foundation for the Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) measurement structure designed for the company. Furthermore, data collection in the form of internal and external benchmarking together with document studies, semi-structured interviews and structured observations has been carried out in order to get a complete view of the current situation as possible in accordance with the guidelines for scientific research approach. The research covers the subject area of maintenance technology and aims to map the maintenance strategy to be able to design a (KPI’s) measurement structure for BillerudKorsnäs maintenance organization. The thesis then gives rise to the analysis section which, with the support of the theoretical frame of reference, describes the improvement proposals and future recommendations to elucidate world-class maintenance and reliability. The study presents maintenance operations based on Swedish standards and “leading and lagging” measurement structure as a scientific basis. This has resulted in a defined metric structure with key performance measures for a maintenance organization where the maintenance strategy is connected to the company's vision and strategy. The question linked to the problem formulation permeates the research and is about explaining how to link to the maintenance strategy and describing which KPIs are to be reported, in order to create an efficient and productive maintenance organization that functions in accordance to the maintenance goals set on BillerudKorsnäs- Sulfatfabrik. The results of the conducted research show that the KPI- structure has not been established in accordance with BillerudKorsnäs' maintenance strategy at a cooperation level, furthermore, the key figures do not show an effect metric relevant to the maintenance operations and the factory management. The proposed improvement proposal proposes a new KPI- structure that provides measurability to the industrial maintenance operation and is symmetrical with BillerudKorsnäs vision and strategy for "Best working methods" in world-class maintenance and reliability.

Abstract:
Traditional manufacturing industry have developed a linear production path that involves resource extraction, energy usage, emissions released to air and water, and waste produced at volumes and rates that places increasing burden on the natural environment. These traditional manufacturing organizations have mostly viewed environmental activities separately from their core business operations. Today, organizations are shifting their manufacturing approach. There is a significant potential to reduce the energy use, emissions released, resource consumption and wastes produced through sustainable initiatives. Using environmental key performance indicators (KPIs) is one emerging sustainability initiative. Environmental KPIs depict the vast quantity of environmental data of a firm in a comprehensive and concise manner, applying mostly to set absolute material and energy data in relation to other variables in order to increase the informational value of quantitative data. In this thesis work, literature review and empirical study was carried out to find out the significant factors and the major challenges during the development and implementation of environmental key performance indicators (KPIs). A case study in four Swedish manufacturing companies was carried out to collect primary data which was later compared with literature review. The thesis work also highlights the management system used to implement environmental KPIs.

Abstract:

The overall target of the maintenance management system is to improve the role of a maintenance organization in positively impacting production capacity, products quality, safety and also overall production cost. In the course of ensuring the above mentioned benefits, the maintenance system should be designed under an umbrella of appropriate strategy that is developed in line with the company’s major business objectives.

The thesis work is focused on developing a model that assist the design of a maintenance strategy which is linked with the company’s major business objectives. And for this the balanced score card approach is utilized. Then the model’s application is tested in a case company with the general procedures described below.

The business requirements by the customers, which are translated to business objectives of the case company, were used as starting points. Then the production performance indicators were checked for their effectiveness in addressing the business objectives of the company. After this, a maintenance strategy with approaches to address the business objectives of the company, which are expressed by the production performance indicators, was developed with potential maintenance performance indicators.

The result showed that the different elements incorporated in the model developed are appropriate in linking the maintenance activities with the company’s business objectives as can be observed from the analysis made on the case company.

Phan, Lan. "Voluntary Disclosure of Non-Financial Key Performance Indicators during Earnings Releases." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/2221.

Full text
Abstract:
Almost two decades after the burst of the Dot-com bubble, investors are opinionated as to whether a new technology bubble has formed in the equities market. Similar to the late 1990's and early 2000's, many Internet firms today go through initial public offering without yet turning over a dollar of earnings, but boast certain revenue-associated performance metrics to investors promising of future success. However, investors are known to hold sentiments sensitive to earnings announcements (Seok, Cho & Ryu, 2019) and reward firms which meet or beat earnings with higher stock returns (Bartov, Givoly & Hayn, 2002). That raises a question on the content of earnings announcements: Besides earnings and cash flow, are there other factors that may influence investor decisions to trade some Internet stocks? My primary hypothesis is that the voluntary disclosure of specific non-financial key performance indicators (NFKPI) during earnings announcement by Internet firms influences the investors' investing/trading decisions. My motivation for this research is to understand better whether there is a strategic element in the voluntary disclosure of NFKPI in Internet companies and how it may impact investors' decisions. The results could be useful to firms in their evaluations of whether to release NFKPI or similar information and to equity research analysts as well as investors in measuring their expectations and valuations of the firms' stocks. The intention of the study is not to generalize the findings to the full market, as the number of companies with the practice of voluntary disclosure of NFKPI is comparatively few compared to those without the practice. Instead, this study examines the effects of NFKPI on the stock returns of those companies which choose to disclose it. I use event study methodology to test the statistical significance of disclosure of NFKPIs during earnings announcements. By controlling for earnings surprise and other meaningful financial ratios, I also examine how the signaling effect of NFKPI could be distinguished from the signaling effects of important information concurrently released during earnings announcements. I focus on two types of NFKPI within the Internet industry: Gross Bookings for online booking agency services and Daily Active Users for social media. As earnings reports and quarterly filings often do not necessarily come together on the same date, I hand-collected data to estimate the surprise effect of NFKPI per earnings announcement, by using available broker forecasts of the respective NFKPI as a proxy for the investor's NFKPI expectation. The results show that while revenue surprise remains consistently the most influential variable to investors, NFKPI Surprise has a positive, statistically significant relationship with the firm's abnormal returns. Additionally, despite being insignificant when expected earnings is beat or in line with consensus, NFKPI Surprise is found statistically significant with a positive relationship to abnormal returns when expected earnings is missed. In line with existing research on management's motivation to prevent negative earnings surprises (Matsumoto, 2002), these findings imply that if firms could employ the voluntary disclosure of NFKPI to manipulate investors' impression and to cushion their stock prices against potential negative market reactions when earnings is missed.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mini-research report presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Administration at the University of Stellenbosch.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research report is focused on the phenomenon that various Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) used by an organisation as part of their Performance Management systems in support of their strategic objectives will sometimes also drive non-productive behaviour. Thus although the intention might be that the KPI should promote a specific strategic objective, the very same KPI might drive additional behaviour that might not be aligned with the strategic objectives at all or could even be downright destructive. The purpose of this research study is to develop an analysis methodology that can be used to identify those KPIs that drive negative secondary behaviour (the intended positive behaviour being the primary behaviour). The methodology must also assist in identifying preventive measures that can be used to mitigate the risk posed by the negative behaviour. An interesting aspect of this research report is that it cross-references between the business and engineering disciplines by means of adapting techniques used in engineering to assist with a business management problem. The result of this research is a KPI Effectiveness Analysis that has gone through a trail phase where a number of case studies were analysed by means of this tool. The results were conclusive and the analysis tool found to be of great assistance.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Performance measurement, Key performance indicator, KPI, diskret tillverkning, lean manufacturing
Mattias Mogard Gustav von Heijne Abstract For successful companies it is essential to have control over its resources. This study covers a topic of getting control and awareness of the resource efficiency within the manufacturing of a company. Performance measurement is a way of quantifying activities of the production and structuring the data into KPIs, Key performance indicators, that makes the information foreseeable and useful. ISO 22400 is a set of standardized KPIs, developed for automated manufacturing. The purpose of the study is to find which of the KPIs from ISO 22400 that is suitable to measure a fully automated discrete production chain that produces engine blocks. The applied chain is a part of the production of the global truck manufacturer Scania. The result of the study is a set of metrics that provides information about the machines and entire orders, which is valuable in the work of streamlining the processes. The system of KPIs could be more optimized if it were tested in practice, and modified after needs. The current system that Scania uses for measuring and improving its production is more overviewing that the one consisting of standardized KPIs, which is more detailed. The both systems are though good complement to each other. Keyword: Performance measurement, Key performance indicator, KPI, discrete manufacturing, lean manufacturing

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is about the principles and practices of the emergmg discipline of virtual enterprising within the context of supply chain management. This type of enterprise makes it possible for Southern African companies to compete in the global marketplace against global players. Value chain analysis is firstly discussed to help the business units, within the virtual enterprise, identify their competitive advantage. This competitive advantage will secure the position of these business units within the virtual enterprise. Electronic commerce is described as the vehicle for data communication within the virtual enterprise, and the supported enterprise resource planning (ERP) software as the transaction capturing software. A performance measurement system is proposed that will assist with the management of virtual enterprises at a macro level. Some conclusions and recommendations are made as to how the management of performance can assist the business units, within the virtual enterprise, to grow financially and obtain sustainability. Recommendations are also made for the implementation of the proposed structure within the 3-D Business Simulator.

Abstract:
In the context of the fight against climate change, the electricity sector is experiencing a complete renewal. Power grids are undergoing a transformation from centralized and unidirectional systems to multilevel and more integrated networks with, among others, the insertion of intermittent Renewable Energy Sources (RES) on the production side and with the emergence of new consumer behaviors on the demand side. In this context, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are gaining momentum. Their excellent technical performances combined with a falling price make these storage solutions applicable to multiple scales and applications, ranging from the electrification of rural areas to the reinforcement of modern power grids. Large scale BESSs are complex systems, for which the electrochemical cells are only the elementary building blocks. Such storage systems consist of a hierarchical assembly of these cells, a complex control structure, a precise thermal management and a reversible power conversion apparatus, cooperating to ensure a smooth and safe operation. To deal with this complexity, BESS owners and operators need synthetic indicators to quickly assess the operation of their storage systems. In this work, this question of the monitoring of large scale BESSs is addressed with a selection, implementation and discussion of Key Performance Indicators (KPI). After a presentation of the multiple components constituting a BESS, a review of the main KPIs found in the literature is proposed. This preliminary phase concluded with the definition of four main categories covering the multiple aspects of the operation of a BESS: operation, performance, ageing and safety. Where needed, a choice was made to choose the estimation techniques offering the best tradeoff between accuracy, ease of implementation and computational load. Then, the overall implementation strategy used to take advantage of the large amount of data available was presented. The results were obtained for actual large-scale Li-Ion BESS projects, covering multiple applications and chemistries. Based on these illustrative results, the robustness and the accuracy of the indicators was discussed. More importantly, a special attention was paid to the methodology, meaning and interdependencies of these KPIs to enable battery owners to better understand their system.

Abstract:
Grenada is 1 of 15 developing countries in Caribbean Community known as CARICOM. The infrastructure capital projects in these developing countries are plagued with an array of issues: unethical practices, inadequate supervision, lack of transparency and accountability, inadequate monitoring and evaluation, cost overruns, and inefficiencies. In the 1980s and 1990s, the International Monitory Fund and World Bank introduced a balanced scorecard engineered under the structural adjustment program, but it was unable to improve infrastructure project efficiencies. This qualitative case study sought to understand the role of management key performance indicators (KPIs) on public sector infrastructure capital project efficiency on the island of Grenada. An institutional assessment and development framework and a classical management theoretical framework methodology were used to explore the effects of management KPIs on public sector infrastructure capital projects efficiencies in developing countries. The research incorporated a constructivist philosophy that underpins the evaluation and perception of the government, the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA), project teams, systems, and stakeholders. A purposive sampling strategy with elements of snowballing was used to obtain 12 representative participants for interviews, and a systematic approach of transcribing, coding, and thematic analysis was done. Findings indicate inadequacies in the BSC performance measure system on infrastructure projects, which justifies the use of comprehensive management KPIs. Positive social change implications of this study include recommendations for comprehensive management KPIs and policies to improve public sector infrastructure project efficiency in Grenada.

This thesis presents an approach for predicting operational performance of airlines on the basis of flight schedules and aircraft assignments. The methodology uses aggregate measures of properties of aircraft assignments, called Aircraft Assignment Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and aims to find correlations between them and the operational performance of the airline. A simulation experiment is prepared to gather a large set of data points for analysis. A motivation is given for the use of control theoretic approaches in airline operations to utilize the KPIs as a basis for initial planning and corrective actions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to point out how a company can gain a better process by using PM in an effective way. The report concludes that the existence in practice of theoretically important aspects are different, also that the most correct way of leading the aspects are through the creation of a PM process. During this thesis work the benefits with performance measurements have been analyzed. Since the genesis of the industrialisation there have been growing needs to identify ways of understanding how a company functions. One of the main events historically leading to the broad adoption of PM was the introduction of the DuPont model. The DuPont model developed by DuPont and General Motors during the beginning of the 20th century quickly became the industry standard in the US for financial analysis. The Dupont model gave PM a central role in evaluating the performance of a company. Companies are today driven towards a higher level of responsiveness and flexibility in order to remain competitive. In order to measure the advancement towards these objectives, an increasingly complex set of activities collection of PM to monitor performance satisfactorily. Often however, PM are still developed around traditional, functional metrics focusing on departmental issues, rather than on the whole value stream. There has also been analyzed how a manufacturing company can use PM in an effective way. Under this thesis it emerged that the most crucial factor affecting the companies PM was that it was hard to understand how to use it correctly. When a company use it correctly it determines where the company stands, if they want to be competitive in the future and a method to maintain a good value stream flow. The economical factors for the company are at least important because all decisions always include costly investments. At the same time a company’s PM must be as efficient as possible and generate a good investment. Also other factors have been presented in this thesis but do not affect the effectiveness of the PM. The most important factors found to a more effective PM were; does the PM fulfil its purpose, is the performance attained, to make the purpose explicit and at last boost the education around the subject. The whole research has been carried out over a twenty-week period, during that period data collection has been performed via case studies. The rest of the data collection has been collected through a literature review by examining relevant data to answer the two research questions. This thesis have led to a better understanding regarding how to use PM and the benefits of it. This are based on the collected data from the case studies and from the theoretical findings, the empirical data were analyzed in a way that the company understood what was wrong with today´s PM.

Abstract:

Griffiths, Matthew Paul. "The use of key performance indicators for external quality control in histological dissection." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2016. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/26447/.

Abstract:
The recent reports into standards in the NHS (Francis, 2013) and quality in pathology (Barnes, 2014) have focused scrutiny on the way in which we work in pathology and how we can provide assurance that this is of a sufficiently high standard. There are a number of external quality assurance schemes covering pathology generally and histopathology specifically (UKNEQAS), however, there is no scheme of any kind covering the process of histological surgical dissection. This is an area undergoing development currently, as it changes from an area which is the sole preserve of medically qualified pathologists, to an area utilising a number of highly trained biomedical scientists. The concept of biomedical scientist led dissection has been around for some years, being codified into a document of best practice in 2005 (IBMS, 2005). This document placed the responsibility for the work of the BMS in the hands of the pathologist, without structured oversight or a quality assurance programme. Ten years on and specimen dissection, including the developing area of BMS led dissection, remains without any formal structured form of quality assurance. This work builds on the points made by Barnes (2014), taking the guidance of the RCPath and IBMS to form a series of key performance indicators (KPI) in relation to specimen dissection. These KPI can be used as an indicator of individual practice, highlighting areas of variation, weakness or strength. Once these are identified, a tailored feedback and training event provides an opportunity to address these errors & omissions, or to enable areas of strength to be shared. The results of this thesis show that introducing training events serves to drastically reduce variation by, and between, dissectors, driving up standards in the department.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis deals with a company performance management method in compliance with the key performance indicators. It addresses the KPIs' characteristics as well as the design process of the indices and their implementation procedures. It does not only rest with a description of the method itself but it also focuses on the related areas of the research such as managers' approach towards the corporate performance management or the business intelligence discipline. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on building the model that makes it possible to design the KPIs with an emphasis on a successful delivery of the entire project. The methodology is based on a selection of the right indicators and application of the implementation techniques leading to a successful completion of the project. A special attention is dedicated to the CPM concept as a basic principal from which the key indicators derive. The practical part addresses the respective design of the KPIs. First of all, the KPIs are suggested to a banking institution. Afterwards, these indicators are confronted with the model drawn up in the theoretical part. The indicators are assessed consequently. The main contribution of this thesis is a development of a model that can serve as a guide for a proper KPIs design in a company and can add to a successful completion of the indicators' implementation. The findings of the research conducted for the purpose of this thesis could be put to use by the corporate managers who are interested in approaching the performance management methods also assessed in this dissertation.

Abstract:
High quality within a Lean production system begins with standardised work, which creates stable processes able to generate predictable output. If nonconformity from the standard procedures occurs, routines are needed to analyse, correct and prevent the nonconformity from occurring again. In that way, the nonconformity can be a trigger for continuous improvements toward more stable processes. In takted production lines, where the operator follows a standard sequence with tasks set to be completed within the takt time, a nonconformity leads to downtime in the operator’s sequence, and no value is added. With short takt time, the nonconformity leads immediately to line stop and the nonconformity will be detected. With long takt time it is often possible to catch up in the sequence before the nonconformity stops the whole line. Thus, as a consequence the problem will be hidden. The aim of this study is to investigate how downtime and nonconformities can be tracked and measured in a Lean production system with long takt time, as well as investigate how this data can contribute to improvements. The study has been carried out as a case study of an assembly line at Atlas Copco Rock Drills division of Underground Rock Excavation in Örebro. Within this case study semi-structured interviews were performed to investigate needs from data collection and improvement processes. Beside the case study at Atlas Copco, external case studies have been performed to gather information about other companies’ processes. Participating companies for external case studies has been RUAG Space, AstraZeneca, Väderstad-Verken and Saab Aerostructures. The result of the study generated three different processes, one for collecting data about nonconformities and related downtime and two parallel processes to use the data for improvements. The data collection process shows how the downtime can be tracked to support investigated needs. The downtime data is also complemented with information about key factors that affect the accuracy of the downtime measurements. The different type of downtimes that are gathered from the process is the deviations total recovery time, recovery time affecting production and downtime for the entire production line. Together with the time measurement the nonconformities is categorised and described with attributes and text to make a thoroughly analysis possible. Analysis tools proposed for the gathered data is pareto analysis, trends, calculation of cost of poor quality and identification of areas with overcapacity. Also, the result shows how some classic TPM-indicators can be used in the analysis. The gathered data can then be used in two developed improvement processes, one for reactive improvements and one for proactive improvements. The reactive process aims to in a systematic manner find corrective and preventive actions for detected nonconformities with high impact on the production. The nonconformities are handled one by one like the procedure for many deviation systems for product quality assurance. The proactive improvement process focuses on patterns in historical data about major nonconformity areas. Together with high level KPI:s and SMART goals to support high level goals, the nonconformity areas helps to identify which activities to carry out in order to fulfil the goals.

Abstract:
Background: The goal for Non-profit organizations is not to maximize the profit, therefore every earned Krone goes back to the organization and their members. In spite of that the non-profit organizations cannot run at a loss and they have to generate revenues to be able to improve the organization and secure their future position. A key performance indicator is used as a tool to get a perspicuous picture of the health and development of the organization. The key performance indicators focus on the aspects that are most critical to an organization's current and future success. The purpose with these is to inform which actions that needs to be implemented to enhance the performance within an organization.Purpose: The aim of the study is to increase the understanding of key performance indicators in Non-profit organizations. We have chosen to study Friskis&Svettis, a Swedish Non-profit organization.Design/methodology/approach: This study uses an abductive approach, which means that we have combined an inductive and a deductive perspective. Research is based on a qualitative method where we have interviewed informants from six different Friskis&Svettis organizations. The empirical data is analyzed against the existing research in the field of study to increase the understanding of the findings.Findings: The results of the study indicate that the mission of Friskis&Svettis is to offer pleasurable and accessible training for everybody. The mission is the same both on central and local level. The study revealed that the KPIs, membership- and presence statistics, are the same and are set centrally. The presences statistics helps to adapt the supply and thereby achieve the goal to get more people in motion. Membership statistics shows whether you succeed with the goal (or not) and can be used as a tool to follow-up and evaluate the organization. The KPIs that are used locally are membership statistics, presence statistic, card sales, liquidity, revenue per member, member satisfaction and solidity. These KPIs vary in number and use in the local units.KPIs are used as a tool to measure how the goals are achieved. Furthermore, the notion is that the financial indicators do not fill an equally important role in Friskis&Svettis when the organization does not have return of investment targets. Financial indicators in Friskis&Svettis are therefore used mainly to ensure survival. It is also clear that these figures enable the realization of the non-financial targets because a good economy helps to improve operations and increase member satisfaction.IIIOriginality/value: The knowledge about key performance indicators in Non-profit organizations is today limited. The findings of the study add knowledge about the subject that can be used in the future for further research.

Abstract:
Practical knowledge is key to the success of organisations, because if effectively managed and shared, it can lead to sustained competitive advantage. However, sharing practical knowledge remains under-researched. Indeed, although there is increasing interest in understanding practical knowledge and how it is shared, the literature on practical knowledge sharing lacks agreement on: how to represent the sharing process, what stages it involves, and the identification of the focal point of the sharing process. Informed by the literature, the current research aimed to explore how individuals within organisations share practical knowledge, aiming to provide an in-depth representation of the components that constitute the practical knowledge sharing process and providing new insights about what occurs in practice. To achieve this primary objective, further exploration of the role of practical knowledge forms, reflection, situation awareness and the sharing mechanisms within the process of practical knowledge sharing, was required. From the literature review, a conceptual framework of practical knowledge sharing was developed for the purpose of guiding the data collection. Notably, the goal of this work was not to test, verify or validate the developed framework, but to explore how practical knowledge is shared within organisations. Taking this guiding framework into the field, two case studies were conducted within a multinational retail organisation (based in the Middle East), which was argued as a suitable research site. This field work explored how to share the practical knowledge associated with the implementation and application of the practices related to a ‘performance management’ management model. While the unit of analysis for the first case study was those individuals sharing how to ‘set Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)’, the unit of analysis for the second case study was those individuals sharing how to ‘rate performance’ of themselves and of their subordinates.

Abstract:
A problem that is prevalent for testers at Ericsson is that performance test results are continuously generated but not analyzed. The time between occurrence of problems and information about the occurrence is long and variable. This is due to the manual analysis of log files that is time consuming and tedious. The requested solution is automation with an algorithm that analyzes the performance and notifies when problems occur. A binary classifier algorithm, based on statistical methods, was developed and evaluated as a solution to the stated problem. The algorithm was evaluated with simulated data and produced an accuracy of 97.54 %, to detect trend breaks. Furthermore, correlation analysis was carried out between performance and hardware to gain insights in how hardware configurations affect test runs.

Abstract:
The study examines the level of quantity and quality of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) reporting for a sample of FTSE 350 UK listed companies over the period (2006-2010). Furthermore, it identifies the determinants of KPIs reporting and investigates its impact upon firm value. Based upon the guidance of the best practice recommended by the Accounting Standard Board (2006), the study develops a measure of disclosure quality by considering the main qualitative attributes of information which, arguably, makes KPIs information more useful to stakeholders. The distinction between disclosure quantity and quality in the study enables the researcher to get greater insights into the drivers and implications of KPIs reporting quantity and quality. The study finds a variation between UK firms in the number of KPIs disclosed with a notable low level of reporting quality, especially for non-financial KPIs. It also finds that corporate governance mechanisms play an important role in improving KPIs reporting. In particular, it shows that directors’ compensations affect the quantity and quality of KPIs disclosure. Furthermore, the study provides evidence that quantity and quality of KPIs disclosure are not derived by the same factors, and both have different impacts on firm value. Whereas, the study finds a negative association between the numbers of KPIs disclosed and firm value, a non-significant relationship is reported between KPIs reporting quality and firm valuation. Overall, this study provides evidence that disclosure quantity is not a good proxy for disclosure quality.

Zhuang, S. "The relationship between high gravity brewing, key performance indicators and yeast osmotic stress response." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/27767/.

Full text
Abstract:
High Gravity (HG) and Very High Gravity (VHG) fermentations are increasingly attractive within the brewing industry as a means of energy-saving and to optimise process efficiency. However, the use of highly concentrated worts is concomitant with a number of biological stress factors and in particular elevated osmotic pressure, which can impact on yeast quality and fermentation performance. In order to eliminate or reduce such negative effects, yeast cells often respond to their environment by adapting their central carbon metabolism and by making osmotic adjustments. The aim of this research was to investigate the impact of wort gravity on carbon flux, key performance indicators and to examine the effect of external osmolality (as a measure of osmotic pressure) on cell physiology. The fermentation performance of lager and ale brewing yeasts in standard (13 °P), HG (18 °P) and VHG (24 °P) worts was assessed with respect to the uptake of wort sugars, and the production of key carbon metabolites. Estimation of carbon partitioning revealed that products including trehalose, glycogen, higher alcohols and esters had only minor effects on carbon distribution, whereas the production of yeast biomass acted as a major trade-off with ethanol production. Moreover, parallel analysis of the fermentation environment indicated that osmolality increased during fermentations, particularly at high gravities, with the largest contribution directly related to ethanol production. Consequently, yeast cells were subjected to a series of increasing osmolality levels induced by sorbitol, designed to replicate high gravity conditions. These conditions were shown to have a negative impact on yeast viability and vitality, although cell genome integrity was unaffected. In addition, cells responded to osmotic pressure by modifying membrane components leading to a change in fluidity, and by promoting glycerol production. It is anticipated that the data presented here will provide a greater understanding of the response of yeast to HG and VHG conditions, potentially leading to process optimisation in the future.

Wiggins, Andrew. "The organisational impact of key performance indicators : their effect on English and Scottish schools." Thesis, Durham University, 2002. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1068/.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of key performance indicators has dramatically increased over the last twenty or so years. Their introduction has been largely justified on the grounds that high stakes proxy indicators (test and exam results), increase accountability which will in turn `drive up' overall performance. Whilst there has been some evidence that measured standards have risen, there have been associated costs, as well as claims of unintended or dysfunctional consequences. The place of KPIs within the broader organisational and managerial context was firstly considered. with particular reference to generic management and accounting theory. Secondly, the results of a questionnaire survey of 162 heads and teachers in England and Scotland was reported. The key findings included evidence that KPIs had a narrowing effect on the curriculum, that they tended to undermine heads and teachers, and encouraged a blame culture. There was also evidence that they caused schools to concentrate on targets at the expense of other important objectives, as well as concentrating on `boarder-line' pupils. English primary schools reported far more dysfunctional behaviour due to KPIs, than did their Scottish counter parts. This was attributed to league tables which Scottish primaries do not have. At the secondary level the results were similar, tables are published for secondary schools in both countries. There was widespread support for changes to the KPIs, including the use of a wider range of measures and `value added' indicators, as well as discontinuing league tables. Improvements to the KPI systems were discussed, including the use of `balanced score card' systems; however, it was argued that such technical changes need to be accompanied by more fundamental organisational changes. There needs to be `top down' leadership, which devolves trust and responsibility, rather than blame and accountability; and one that will develop and nurture a true learning culture throughout the education system.

Abstract:
The current business environment in the tourism industry and, in particular, in the lodging sector is driven by the increasing level of competitiveness associated with the boom of new players in the market, as well as the current changes and levels of demand of the new tourism consumers. Several previous studies highlight the use of information and key performance indicators (KPIs) at the organizational decision-making processes as efficient tools for thriving in the growing competitive environment. These evidences can be found throughout the tourism accommodation businesses regardless of their size or typology. Having said that, the local lodging, that usually are small and medium size units, are no exception; on the contrary, their role in the national context has shown specific information needs. The goal of this study is to assess the use of information and KPIs by the manager-owners of small and medium size local lodging units in Portugal. The methodological process comprised in the first place a set of exploratory interviews with experts and later on the dissemination of an online questionnaire to all manager-owners of small and medium size local lodging units in Portugal. The results of this investigation represent an important input to the sector since there is still little research on this matter. Thus, we concluded that managers of local lodging units in Portugal consider the access to information and specific indicators relevant for the management of their businesses. In particular, these managers tend to use more widely KPIs that depicts relationship with guests, KPIs that reflect the activity/ operation of the lodging units and also financial KPIs.

As to fitting and unfitting of the financial achievements, not only demonstrating the management quality of enterprise, but also relating the future growth and the development of enterprise. It is always an important topic to manage and control the finance. Therefore, it is basic of management to correctly measure the finance, handle the management and control of finance. In enterprise business, the financial materials may carry on each activity of enterprise to be appraised and compared according to the unified standard, and represent the cost of each project to reflect the performance of finance. Therefore, lookthrough performance indicators to measure the cost of project is namely to do and one of important work. Hence, the effectiveness of performance measurement is the crucial to the financial control, and only key performance indicators can reflect disparity of the actual cost and the expectation cost of project. The aim of this research is how to searching the suitable performance indicators. In order to searching performance indicators of finance, this research develops a systematic method. First, it is based on the concept of Balanced Scorecard to effectively reorganize the related financial indicators and design the questionnaire. Second, to adopt Modified Delphi Method finds the key performance indicators. Third, to choose a suitable Score Function makes the analysis in view of the key performance indicators to let the policy-maker make decision. In addition, it also can be obtained the scores of the different departments by the department attribute to determine the performance of each department. Finally, this research takes an aerospace company as an example, carries on the data collection and designs the questionnaire. Then, it can be obtained the key performance indicators of the financial perspective that affect to evaluate the orders and performance measurement of each department in an aerospace company by using systematic method of this research.

Abstract:
The performance of the design activities for a construction project can have a significant impact on the overall performance and efficiency of the project. Design activities need to be monitored to measure performance of the design process. Performance indicators can be used in this process. The Indicators can: i) measure the degree of success of a project or organization; ii) predict, control and measure the performance of design processes; iii) benchmark performances of different projects within the same- company or with other firms; iv) track and demonstrate long-term development and improvement, thereby decreasing design and construction cost and time and increasing the quality of the design product. In the context of Canada, specific construction performance indicators to assess construction project performance across project phases have yet to be formulated and documented. Therefore, there is a need to develop such indicators for the Canadian consulting engineering. From this perspective, the present research introduces practical framework and describes a model that measure the performance of the design activities for Canadian construction projects. The main objectives of this research are the following: i) to identify key indicators that affect the design performance of construction projects; ii) to develop a model for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the performance of design activities in the Canadian construction industry; and iii) to examine the possibility of their use in the construction industry. The methodology adopted for this research is based on review of the existing literature on design processes, review of the existing literature on design performance indicators, questionnaire surveys, interviews with practitioners, and case studies. The questionnaires along with the interviews with designers and managers from the Canadian consulting engineering are mainly conducted to explore and indentify indicators affecting the design performance. The case studies are used to validate and amend the use of these indicators in measuring project performance at the design stage. A web-based questionnaire aimed at design and construction firms was constructed. The significance and the quantification of design performance indicators are determined using a statistical package. The results from the questionnaire were used to develop a generic set of nine groups of design performance indicators for the Canadian consulting engineering. However, this research focuses on the heavy construction sector. The nine groups of indicators have been compared in pairs to identify their level of importance to each other. Experts from heavy construction participated in the pairwise comparisons task. Built on the results of the survey and experts judgment, a Model for Design Performance Measurement (MDPM) is introduced. The MDPM uses the standard Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to assign weights to the scores of the selected indicators, to measure a project performance and to compare projects. The MDPM is tested for small scale heavy constructions. The developed design performance measurement model can 1) predict, track, and control future performance, 2) highlight area/s for future improvement, 3) enable companies to benchmark the performance of different projects from the same or different companies, and 4) document all design performance data

Abstract:
Based on a 5-month internship in a business group of the veterinary sector (OneVet Group), this paper addresses some of the issues in the area of management control that have been the subject of most recent discussion. On the one hand, it discusses how results control (Merchant and Van der Stede, 2017) are integrated and why they play a central role in the configuration of management control systems in organizations. More specifically, it is discussed the use of key performance indicators (KPI) as mechanisms of motivation and organizational alignment and to support the decision-making process. Based on the reality experienced in the internship context, the thesis also focuses on the role of the management control function ("controller") in the organizational framework, comparing its more "traditional" functions with a more "modern" vision, based on the most recent technological developments, namely, business intelligence (BI) systems. The main scope of the internship was the creation of a set of management indicators, using a business intelligence tool (Power BI), which could be key to the management of the company. The methodology used in this research was the case study, with data collection carried out through access to internal company documentation, interviews with members of management and participant observation.

Purpose: this paper presents notable themes regarding the relationship between sustainability development and the food loss issue. In doing so, it provides coherent knowledge concerning this global problem and highlights the key research areas in this context. Design/methodology/approach: this paper is a viewpoint piece; normative literature and supposition are used to orientate the views of the authors. Findings: this paper has identified the main causes of food loss at each stage of the food supply chain. It has then classified the causes into three groups based on organisational environment: internal causes, micro-environmental causes and macro-environmental causes. In addition, the authors suggest a need to adopt a holistic view of the performance measurement system in the food industry through incorporating sustainability pillars with traditional performance perspectives in the context of food loss. Practical implications: food loss generating from various causes along the supply chain means that more food should flow across the supply chains to reach consumers’ homes. This paper provides reassuring insights that will help the decision-makers in food companies to revise the performance measurement system in the context of food loss reduction. Social implications: reducing food loss will contribute to increasing food availability and decreasing food prices, which leads to strengthening economic and physical access for those people who are not able to get food. Consequently, it considers a mandatory step to enhance food security. Originality/value: to raise the significance of food loss reduction along the supply chain and to stress an urgent need to adopt a holistic view of the sustainability performance measurement system with a particular focus on the food loss issue.
