Abstract:
To detect and differentiate two essential amino acids (L-Valine and L-Phenylalanine) in the human body, a novel asymmetrically folded dual-aperture metal ring terahertz metasurface sensor was designed. A solvent mixture of water and glycerol with a volume ratio of 2:8 was proposed to reduce the absorption of terahertz waves by reducing the water content. A sample chamber with a controlled liquid thickness of 15 μm was fabricated. And a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system, which is capable of horizontally positioning the samples, was assembled. The results of the sensing test re

Leucine has been proposed as an in vivo regulator of protein metabolism, although the evidence for this in humans remains inconclusive. To test this hypothesis, we infused either L-leucine (154 +/- 1 mumol.kg-1 x h-1) or saline intravenously in six healthy men in two separate studies. L-Leucine infusion increased plasma concentrations of leucine and alpha-ketoisocaproate from 112 +/- 6 and 38 +/- 3 mumol/l to 480 +/- 27 (P < 0.001) and 94 +/- 13 mumol/l (P < 0.001), respectively, without any significant change in circulating insulin or C peptide levels. Acmella radicans (Asteraceae) produces at least seven alkamides, most with either an isobutyl- or phenylethyl group as the amine moiety. These moieties suggest that the amino acids valine and phenylalanine are the biosynthetic precursors of these alkamides. On the basis of labeled feeding experiments using either L-[2H8]valine or L-[2H8]phenylalanine we present evidence for the involvement of these two amino acids in the biosynthesis of (2 E,6 Z,8 E)- N-isobutyl-2,6,8-decatrienamide (affinin) (1), (2 Z,4 E)- N-(2-phenylethyl)-2,4-octadienamide (2), (2 E)- N-(2-phenylethyl)-nona-2-en-6,8-diynam

Changes to crystallisation conditions can critically affect important physical properties of materials, which can in tum affect the sustainability of consistent product quality that is pivotal to industrial manufacturing. The following studies demonstrate how crystallisation processes, and the consequent quality of the crystals produced, can be easily manipulated by varying the solution mixing regimes and initial relative supersaturation. Most importantly, emphasis was given to changes to the material's physical properties induced by the presence of impurities in solution. To this effect, alph

Biomedical implants such as dental and orthopedic implants also encounter biocorrosion. All bacterial cell walls contain peptidoglycan molecules with peptide stems consisting of four alternating L- and D-amino acids. The peptide stems all have a D-alanine terminus. It has been hypothesized that replacing the D-alanine terminus with another D-amino acid sends a biofilm dispersal signal. Several recent journal papers presented experimental data

Elucidate the C6-C2 biochemical pathways leading to the biosynthesis of phenylacetaldehyde, phenylethyl alcohol and phenylethyl acetate in floral tissues of ornamentally important plants, pefunia and roses. 2. Isolate and characterrze genes responsible for the production of these C6-C2 compounds and those involved in the regulation of the pathway using genomic and transcriptomic tools. 3. Determine whether altering the expression of key genes of this pathway can result in changing the aroma characteristics of flowers. Aldehydes are in
