The present study assessed the isokinetic responses of male military personnel(N=42). The study aimed to evaluate the strength capabilities of South African infantrymen and establish benchmark data on a population not previously tested. “Work-simulation” packages have not been widely exploited and this study further aimed to approximate how effectively occupation simulating tasks could identify the capabilities of soldiers. Testing was carried out using a CYBEX 6000 isokinetic dynamometer and involved six laboratory tests (LTs) and four occupation-simulating tests (OSTs). Subjects were require

Abstract:
Introduction: Asbestos has been employed in a myriad of industrial applications for more than a century. Of the 181 Mt of asbestos produced worldwide, over 31 Mt was consumed in the U.S. The production and consumption of this mineral eventually was found to cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. While the brunt of the human exposure to asbestos occurred in insulation work, many more workers in other jobs were expose to asbestos fibers. Very little is known about the potential exposure to asbestos in research labs. Goal: In order to investigate potential research lab work exposures, we

Abstract:
Face velocity is the standard variable used to test the performance of laboratory fume hoods. A quantitative testing method developed by Caplan & Knutson involves the measurement of tracer gas leakage out of a hood. Use of that method identified parameters other than face velocity that seemed to affect hood performance. In this study, a new testing method (Scott Method) was developed to incorporate hood parameters identified by Caplan & Knutson with face velocity measurements to generate a more comprehensive hood performance test method. The Scott Method consists of a semi-quantitative rating

The effect of an ergonomically sound intervention on selected physical, physiological and perceptual variables was evaluated in a test - retest experimental set-up using 28 young, healthy male students. Noise is a pervasive workplace hazard that varies spatially and temporally. Hazard mapping is a useful way to communicate intensity and distribution of noise sources in the workplace. These maps can be created using a stationary network of sensors, although the cost of noise measurement instruments has prohibited their use in such a network. The objectives for this work were to (1) develop an inexpensive noise sensor (<$100) that measures A-weighted sound pressure levels within ±2 dBA of a Type 2 sound level meter (SLM, ~$1,800); and (2) evaluate 50 noise sensors before field deployment as par

Laboratory safety has recently become more of an imperative in research laboratories than it has ever been in the past. Historically, results and publications have been the top priority of most researchers, not laboratory safety. This thesis discusses a number of laboratory accidents.
