Abstract Larger cities typically give rise to two opposite effects: tougher competition among firms and higher production costs. Using an urban model with substitutability of production factors and pro-competitive effects, I study product market responses to an increase in city population, land-use regulations and commuting costs. I show that those responses depend on the land intensity in production. If the input share of land is low, a larger city attracts more firms setting lower prices, whereas for an intermediate land share, city expansion increases both the mass of firms and product pric

Our analysis is illuminating at least two aspects of subsidies: first, it suggests that an incentive scheme for promoting a larger farm size would have a probable positive effect on agricultural value-added; second, that subsidies today produce the larger impact on future value-added for the top two percentiles of the subsidy distribution. This paper demonstrates that the distribution of county level agricultural land size in the United States is best described by a power-law distribution, a distribution that displays extremely heavy tails. This indicates that the majority of farmland exists in the upper tail. Our analysis indicates that the top 5% of agricultural counties account for about 25% of agricultural land between 1997-2012. The power-law distribution of farm size has important implications for the design of more efficient regional and national agricultural policies as counties close to the mean account for little of th

Abstract:
This paper studies the dynamics of farm size distribution, how they are influenced by weather shocks, and the implications for aggregate productivity. Using data from several developing countries, we first document new empirical facts about households' landholding choices and how weather shocks influence these decisions. Building on a rich longitudinal dataset for Colombia on farm sizes, land transactions, and households' consumption and investment decisions, we then show that weather shocks increase the frequency of land sales and reduce farm sizes within municipalities, especially among smal

Abstract:
Understanding land accumulation dynamics is relevant for policy makers interested in the economic effects of land inequality in developing country agriculture. We thus explore and simultaneously test the leading theories of microlevel land accumulation dynamics using unique panel data from Paraguay. The results suggest that farm growth varies systematically with farm size --a formal rejection of stochasticgrowth theories (that is, Gibrat's Law)-- and that titled land area may have considerable infuence on land accumulation. Furthermore, our estimates indicate that a dualistic agrarian structur

Latin American and Caribbean countries have historically been known for their rates of land inequality, highest in the world. However, these countries also exhibit a high degree of heterogeneity in their patterns of land concentration and average farm sizes. These cross-country differences play a determining role in productivity of farms and the distribution of agricultural income. Constructing a new data-set matching agri- cultural census and household survey data, we provide suggestive evidence on the positive relationship between farm size and farm income and wages. The introduction of rice into Ethiopia provided a solution to food insecurity. More recently, national policy has emphasised the positive relationship between rice specialisation and commercialisation and, thus, higher incomes. In retrospect, this initiative has been hugely successful as the regions where rice has been introduced have been transformed from heavily relying on food aid to becoming a thriving commercial centre. This transformation owes much to the increase in the production, consumption and commercial value of rice. However, the relationship between specialisation and commerciali

Southwest Utah contains what may be the largest landslide complex on land in the world. This complex includes three ancient side-by-side gigantic slides that cover an area roughly the size of Yellowstone National Park with a volume of slide debris that would nearly fill the Grand Canyon to its rim. Geologists call it the Marysvale gravity slide complex— “Marysvale” for the namesake volcanic field that partly failed catastrophically three separate times, and “gravity slide” to call attention to a special class of extremely large and geologically complex landslides several tens to thousands of s

Abstract:
This dataset examines the impact of charcoal and tree species on forest soil recovery post-fire, encompassing soil profile characteristics, particle size distribution (granulometry), and chemical properties. It includes measurements from eight variants, considering four tree species and two land preparation methods for regeneration: with and without charcoal removal. The methodology and study location are described in the publication.

The dynamic state of the land surface presents challenges and opportunities for military and civil operations in extreme cold environments. In particular, the effects of snow and frozen ground on Soldier and vehicle mobility are hard to overstate. Current authoritative weather and land models are run at global scales (i.e., dx > 10 km) and are of limited use at the Soldier scale (dx < 100 m). Here, we describe several snow physics upgrades made to the Noah-Multiparameterization (Noah-MP) community land surface model (LSM). These upgrades include a blowing snow overlay to simulate the lat

In this study, we examine the revenue, costs, profits and technical efficiency of chilli farms in Cambodia. We employ a representative sample of 542 chilli farming households from Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Cham, Tboung Khmum and Kandal. The sample was randomly selected using a two-stage stratified sampling design, where villages were chosen in the first stage as the primary sampling unit and households engaged in chilli production were selected in the second stage as the secondary sampling units. The selection of primary sampling units was proportional to the numbe
