Globalisation and rapidly changing economic environment force businesses to look for new survival or development strategies, fight for new markets, and adapt to turbulent circumstances. Access to new countries and expansion to new markets increasingly determine success and affect the overall economic development. Such factors as growing volumes of export and import, increasing tourism flows, and intensifying international territorial mobility increase people's motivation to learn foreign languages. The Maltese language, a unique member of the Semitic language family, is shaped by strong influences from Malta’s conquerors. The aim of this paper is to explore the history of Malta and its language, delving into their origin, and how Malta’s visitors, together with Romance languages of Europe, left an impact on the intertwined entity of Malta and its language. Abstract All languages are transformed to some extent by other languages with which they are regularly in contact. Some languages are regarded as ‘developed’ insofar as they function as the dominant mode of communication in economically developed countries (e.g. in North America and Europe). The dominant speech communities of rich economies transmit new innovations and discoveries globally, which are then translated into languages described as ‘developing’ because their use is chiefly restricted to so-called economically developing nations, such as Tanzania.
