This dissertation studies Bantu nominalizations drawing evidence primarily from Gikuyu and Bantu languages already in the literature. Gikuyu provides a very rich system of deverbal nouns which brings to the fore issues regarding word and phrase composition of deverbal elements, and the lexical integrity of words. Bantu nominalizations have received little attention in the literature in works such as Myers (1987), Kinyalolo (1991), Bresnan and Mchombo (1995). Abstract:

This paper describes a two-level formalism where feature structures are used in contextual rules. Whereas usual two-level grammars describe rational sets over symbol pairs, this new formalism uses tree structured regular expressions. They allow an explicit and precise definition of the scope of feature structures. A given surface form may be described using several feature structures. Feature unification is expressed in contextual rules using variables, like in a unification grammar. Grammars are compiled in finite state multi-tape transducers.

The first, the Samana English Corpus is a series of recorded conversations with very elderly residents of the Samana peninsula in the Dominican Republic. Ever since Bengt Sigurd laid out the first comprehensive description of Swedish phonotactics in 1965, it has been the main point of reference within the field. This thesis attempts a new approach, by presenting a computational and statistical model of Swedish phonotactics, which can be built by any corpus of IPA phonetic script. Abstract:

While studies have focused on the impact of a L1 on a L2, less is known about dominant language transfer in L1 productions. This study aims at investigating first language (L1) attrition in Italian English-immersed late bilinguals. These bilinguals have learnt an additional language in adulthood and have been living in this language environment for an extended period of time. More precisely, the population of this study consisted in a group of Italians (n = 42) who have been living abroad for at least 5 years (English-immersed Participants).
