Abstract:
AbstractIn 2002, film director Lars von Trier agreed to stage Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle in Bayreuth. The project was abandoned, however, after two years of preparation. For this article’s research, I conducted interviews with key persons involved with the project, not least Lars von Trier himself, and I was given access to unseen materials (documents, videotapes and other items) from the archives of Lars von Trier’s film company, Zentropa, which shed light both on the director’s plans for the production and on the process that would eventually spell the end of the project. The materials, however, turned out to illuminate not only what the opera world lost, but also what von Trier’s later films gained from his immersion into Wagner’s creative world. In this article I seek to map both the ill-fated process and explore the later benefits from it in the films Antichrist (2009), Nymphomaniac (2013) and, above all, Melancholia (2011), with its echoes of Wagner’s apocalyptic Götterdämmerung.

Abstract:
Abstract Lars von Trier’s Medea renders on the silver screen Carl Th. Dreyer’s unrealized script from Euripides’ play. Von Trier considers Dreyer one of his greatest cinematic influences and fashions his film as a ‘personal interpretation and homage to the master’. Two prominent narrative features of Dreyer’s cinematic oeuvre are a cause/effect logic and parallelism, which create formally rigid and closed worlds governed by an abstract, impersonal order. Von Trier applies these features especially to the frame of Medea in order to enhance the theodicy of Euripides’ tragedy and Dreyer’s adaptation of it. He also plays games of cinematic reflexivity in conscious or unconscious competition with Dreyer. Finally, his directorial virtuosity manifests itself most spectacularly in the editing of the film’s frame, which arranges the segments of the prologue and the epilogue so as to engage reception as a temporal activity rooted in the past, undertaken in the present, and directed to the future.

El presente artículo analiza el modo en el que Lars von Trier recrea para el cine el estereotipo de Medea. Mediante el análisis fílmico de la película y apoyándose en los estudios culturales, el texto se interroga acerca de la importancia y el poder potencial del cine a la hora recuperar el antiguo mito y demostrar su vigencia. El análisis amplía horizontes para la compresión de los mecanismos que articulan el entramado de significados de la película, donde Von Trier aporta una nueva visión del arquetipo de Medea uniéndola, a la tradición pictórica del Romanticismo. Una influencia que habita en las posteriores obras del director danés, donde el paisaje, la naturaleza, se erige en elemento catalizador de las pulsiones humanas, en su cómplice y testigo. Abstract: This paper explores the way that Lars von Trier’s film recreates the stereotype of Medea. Using film analysis and based on cultural studies the article asks about the importance and potential power of cinema to recover the ancient myth and show their effects. The analysis expands horizons for the understanding of the mechanisms that link the network of meanings of the film, where the author offers a new vision of Medea's archetype attaching it to the pictorial tradition tied to the Romanticism. Abstract:
Lars von Trier’s films have overarching metaphysical themes that are associated with Greek tragedy. German Idealist and Romantic philosophers from F.W.J. Schelling to Friedrich Nietzsche extracted key themes from Greek tragedy such as fate, freedom and nature; the very themes that form a coherent thread through von Trier’s oeuvre. This thesis explores von Trier’s films through the lens of the tragic for two reasons. First, the exploration contributes to an understanding of themes that run throughout von Trier’s oeuvre. Second, such an approach allows us to understand tragedy as having a contemporary relevance, viewing it as both a surviving and evolving art form. Such a position is controversial because many thinkers have long discussed the death of tragedy. According to some philosophers—the very philosophers that delineated tragedy’s themes—there has been a decline in metaphysical understandings of the human agent’s relationship to the world that has contributed to the decline of the tragic. There are also other reasons for the view that the creation of tragedies ceases in modernity. Christian metaphysics and ethics, secularised in the contemporary West, have been judged by the likes of Nietzsche to be incompatible with the tragic as tragedy takes us beyond moral frameworks. There are also artistic challenges to the tragic. After the horrors of the twentieth century’s genocides, tragedy seems inadequate as a means to examine human cruelty and suffering. Moreover, other modes of drama such as comedy and melodrama are genres that supposedly blunt tragedy and have come to replace tragedy. Von Trier’s films engage with these challenges to tragedy, his films explore the themes of the Holocaust, Christian ideals, comedy and melodrama. By showing that von Trier’s films manifest the tragic, tragedy is revealed to be able to engage with contemporary concerns.

Este trabalho pretende investigar os mecanismos da representação melodramática em um determinado período filmográfico da obra do cineasta dinamarquês Lars Von Trier, conhecido como Trilogia do Coração de Ouro, que compreende os seguintes filmes: Ondas do Destino (1996), Os Idiotas (1998) e Dançando no Escuro (2000). Para tanto o trabalho divide-se em quatro partes: a primeira promove uma revisão da literatura acadêmica sobre o melodrama cinematográfico; a segunda traça um panorama da evolução do modo de representação melodramático ao longo do tempo, localizando suas origens e seus modos de operação; a terceira e quarta partes focam no trajetória filmica de Lars Von Trier até o corpus analítico escolhido, investigando o modo de organização interna dos elementos fílmicos e os efeitos que tais composições visam provocar no espectador. Esta dissertação utilizou como perspectiva teórico-analítica o método conhecido como Poética, proposto no Laboratório de Análise Fílmica do Programa de Pós-graduação em Comunicação e Cultura Contemporâneas da Universidade Federal da Bahia, sob a orientação do Professor Wilson Gomes

The theses is dedicated to the film trilogies of Lars von Trier and the changes in his attitude towards the film-making. There is an obvious fascination with the visual aspect of the film and the visual expressivity in the beginning of his career. On the other end stands a fascination with the story and it´s charecters. Main chapters are on Trier´s conceptual attitude towards the film-making, the topics he´s interested in, the type of Trier´s main character, the way Trier works with the story, the filming methods he uses, and about his films in whole. The main part presents the incomplete American Trilogy: films Dogville and Manderlay.

Este análisis parte de un proyecto de investigación realizado durante los últimos años en torno a la división sexual del trabajo y la educación. La globalización ha facultado movimientos activistas y feministas que traspasan fronteras, como #metoo, que permitió dar voz y visibilidad a los abusos cometidos contra las mujeres en el mundo laboral. Trabajando de forma colaborativa y participativa, el proyecto #EqualWorkEqualRights se constituye en forma de campaña de sensibilización. Para ello se acude a una metodología del conocimiento situado, trazando los curriculum vitae de hombres y mujeres de distintos continentes, entrelazados por el común de su escritura desde una perspectiva de género que denuncia las desigualdades en el trabajo y en la educación. Las prácticas de la autorepresentación están presentes en un versionado de currículum vitae proyectivo, que construye el futuro desde el presente inmediato para delatar las aporías de la economía capitalista global fundada en el heteropatriarcado. Se construye de esta forma un archivo activista desde una perspectiva feminista de las personas milenials que más afectadas se ven por el precariado y por las desigualdades de género.

Descripción del caso: Mujer de 30 años traída a Urgencias tras encontrarla andando por la carretera. Hace 48h se encontraba en un retiro espiritual, consumiendo una cantidad indeterminada de ayahuasca. Ha permanecido en vigilia desde el consumo, con sensación de que si acaba cerrando los ojos puede morir. Se encuentra inquieta, con desinhibición conductual y en contexto de elevada angustia, se agarra con su mano el cuello. Se administra olanzapina 5mg vo. AP: Síndrome depresivo y síntomas psicóticos en contexto de uso de sustancias (MDMA, Ketamina). Exploración y PPCC: CyO en las tres esferas. Distraible. Pupilas midriáticas y ataxia de la marcha. Hipertímica, mirada fija. Inquieta. Asociaciones laxas. Ideas delirantes de perjuicio que consisten en la sensación de haber sido capturada por alienígenas, con repercusión afectivo-conductual. Pseudoalucinaciones auditivas que consisten en la sensación de escuchar su propia voz cantando. Juicio comprometido. TAC, TO y analítica: normales. Juicio clínico: Episodio psicótico por consumo de sustancias alucinógenas. Diagnóstico diferencial: Esquizofrenia; Trastorno delirante; Trastorno psicótico breve; Trastorno esquizoafectivo; Trastorno esquizofreniforme; ; Trastorno bipolar, episodio maníaco o depresivo con síntomas psicótico; Causa orgánica Comentario final: El consumo de ayahuasca puede producir efectos disociativos, cambios en la percepción y alucinaciones. También es posible que aparezca agitación, taquicardia, hipertensión, midriasis y vómitos. En hasta un 7% de los casos hay signos de gravedad, como convulsiones, parada respiratoria o cardíaca. Pacientes con AP o AF de psicosis, o uso concomitante de otras drogas deben evitar la ingesta de alucinógenos por el riesgo de presentar un episodio psicótico. Thermo-mechanical stresses in functionally graded (FG) thick-walled cylindrical vessels are investigated in this paper. The cylinder is assumed to be made of a functionally graded material (FGM) with varying material properties in the radial direction. The modulus of elasticity, thermal conductivity, and coefficient of thermal expansion are expressed using power laws. The hollow cylinder is subjected to axisymmetric mechanical and thermal loading. Governing equations are developed for the desired configuration by using equations of equilibrium, stain-displacement relation, and Hooke’s law. A computer program is written in Maple −14 to show the effect of the power indices on the radial, tangential, axial, and Von-Mises stress distributions. The results are compared from the work available in the existing literature. Results show that the Von-Mises stress can be relaxed for specific gradients. Thus, appropriate gradients can be used to make functionally graded cylindrical vessels to maintain structural integrity when subjected to severe mechanical and thermal loads.

A partir de la traducción del breve texto de Abraham a Sancta Clara (1644-1709) Wunderlicher Traum von einem großen Narrennest, publicado en 1703, se muestran algunos de los desafíos de la traducción literaria, así como las estrategias utilizadas para su trasvase a otra lengua. Además de las dificultades estéticas y lingüísticas, sobresalen en esta traducción aquellas surgidas a raíz del carácter histórico e intertextual del texto. Estudiaremos cómo una serie de elementos extratextuales ha influido en el complejo proceso de traducción y condicionado la estrategia traductológica, y veremos el papel que desempeñan aquí las notas a pie que acompañan a la traducción. La distancia temporal y cultural y la gran cantidad de referencias intertextuales hacen que la traducción se convierta en un instrumento idóneo para trasladar y difundir la alteridad, la experiencia del otro y de su cultura e imaginario.

Die Rhein-Main-Region ist wie andere große deutsche Metropolregionen von einem angespannten Immobilienmarkt geprägt, der das Ziel volatiler, d.h. in Bezug auf Umfang und Objekte sehr stark schwankender, Investments ist. Bis 2008 flossen Investitionen vorrangig in den Bürobestand, im Zuge der Finanz- und Schuldenkrise wurden Investments institutioneller Anleger jedoch in den Wohnungsmarkt umgelenkt (Scharmanski 2013; Heeg 2013). Hintergrund hierfür sind einerseits eine steigende Zahl von sog. notleidenden Krediten („non-performing loans“) im Büroimmobilienbereich (vgl. Biedermann et al., Kap. 7) und andererseits anziehende Mieten und Eigentumspreise auf dem Wohnungsmarkt, welche Investitionen in Wohnimmobilien lukrativ werden lassen (Kholodilin/Mense 2012). In der Folge werden vermehrt Luxuswohnungen erstellt und wird preiswerter Wohnraum vernichtet.

Aunque no todos los jóvenes van a poder lograr el trabajo que desean, sus aspiraciones tienen consecuencias en sus trayectorias educativas y laborales. Cuantifcar cuán alcanzables son las aspiraciones de los jóvenes es clave para diseñar políticas efectivas. Este trabajo se propuso explorar qué aspiraciones educativas y laborales tienen los y las jóvenes en Uruguay para luego cuantifcar qué brechas existen entre esas aspiraciones y la realidad de lo que el mercado laboral puede ofrecerles. Para ello se realizó una encuesta a más de mil jóvenes uruguayos de entre 18 y 24 años y también grupos focales. A pesar de las difcultades que enfrentan en el presente, la mayoría de los jóvenes son optimistas en cuanto al empleo que esperan alcanzar lo que genera una brecha entre las aspiraciones y las oportunidades que brinda el mercado laboral. A su vez, las aspiraciones laborales de los jóvenes se encuentran concentradas en un limitado número de ocupaciones y existen diferencias por género y nivel socioeconómico. La mayoría de los jóvenes que están empleados no están satisfechos con sus empleos y ven poca vinculación entre sus empleos y sus estudios. De estos hallazgos se desprende que existen ganancias potenciales para Uruguay de una mayor alineación entre las aspiraciones de los jóvenes y las oportunidades del mercado laboral. El trabajo cierra con una serie de propuestas de políticas públicas orientadas a asegurar trayectorias educativas, proveer información y orientación a los jóvenes, reducir el desajuste de habilidades y promover el acceso a un primer empleo de calidad.

Las encuestas LAPOP (Latin American Public Opinion Project) son un instrumento útil y relevante en el análisis cuantitativo de las instituciones políticas y su relación con los ciudadanos de los países de América Latina y el Caribe. Este documento analiza las relaciones entre las instituciones políticas y temas como calidad de vida y victimización a la luz de estas encuestas. Los resultados generales muestran que los ciudadanos latinoamericanos tienen percepciones distintas frente a su vida y frente a lo que sucede en su país, y aún ven en la democracia el sistema político más deseable para la conducción de sus países.

El documento que ahora ponemos a su disposición está conformado por dos partes: la primera, centrada en definir algunos conceptos y exponer ciertas teorías sobre el desarrollo y las alternativas; la segunda, hace referencia a la construcción de algunas experiencias concretas relacionadas con los programas de intervención social universitaria que llevamos a cabo en nuestro Centro. Las alternativas que están emergiendo son consecuencia de una serie de transformaciones múltiples, muchas veces anónimas, visibles o subterráneas, decididas por una variedad de actores sociales y cuyo intereses van desde el fortalecimiento del tejido social al cuidado de nuestro entorno, desde la presión ciudadana para redefinir las instituciones públicas a las propuestas educativas innovadoras, desde la economía social y solidaria a nuevas visiones del desarrollo regional integral, entre otras. En esta búsqueda de alternativas al mundo presente que vivimos no basta mejorar indefinidamente procesos e instrumentos sociales, sino que también debemos preguntarnos, una vez más, por los objetivos que deseamos alcanzar. Cuestionarnos tal como lo hace Tzvetan Todorov: ¿En qué mundo deseamos vivir? ¿Qué vida queremos construir?

El objetivo de estas notas es presentar un resumen de las lecciones aprendidas de un estudio cualitativo realizado en empresas que participan del Programa Juventud y Empleo (PJE), con el fin de analizar la percepción de los empleadores sobre el programa. En particular, en las consultas con los empleadores se buscó identificar por qué las tasas de ocupación de los jóvenes son bajas al terminar la pasantía en las empresas, según los resultados de las primeras evaluaciones de impacto. Las consultas realizadas a empleadores permiten extraer conclusiones claras sobre cómo ven el programa, sobre las posibilidades de empleo en los distintos tipos de empresas; y que permiten entender por qué los efectos del programa en cuanto a empleo han sido menores a lo esperado. En base a las conclusiones de este análisis se obtienen implicaciones que permiten elaborar recomendaciones tanto para el diseño del programa, como para las evaluaciones de impacto.

Abstract:
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a complex legal-institutional system that, on the one hand, offers industrialized countries options for cost-effective emission reductions and, on the other, provides developing countries with opportunities for sustainable development. Investors face the difficulty of identifying suitable CDM projects from approximately 130 possible host countries and nearly 60 possible project activities. In order to develop points of reference for strategic investments, this paper identifies and categorizes the risks arising in the value creation process of bilateral energy projects into four action-related levels. At the host level, the focus is on political-institutional and sector-specific risks, while at the investor state level, the legal design of the CDM's complementary function is relevant. The project level covers technology- and process-related risks, with the identification of the reference case and the proof of additionality posing particular problems. The future design of the CDM and the reform of the procedure at the UNFCCC level pose a fundamental risk. A two-stage assessment procedure is proposed for risk assessment: a rough analysis captures sociographic, climate policy, institutional and sector-specific criteria of the host. The differentiation of the project stage allows the localization of the project in the value chain and a differentiation regarding the use of methods. The assessment of project registration is based on the methods used and gives recognition rates per method and project category; project performance is measured in terms of the ratio of emission reductions actually realized to those planned in the project documentation. A detailed analysis following the coarse analysis provides qualitative guidance for project evaluation. These include the Executive Board's methodological principles, correct application of methodologies, identification of the reference case, proof of additionality, as well as the financial conditions of the relevant sector and publicity-related aspects. Despite individual hosts and project technologies, the developed two-step risk analysis allows, with relatively little effort and in line with business practice, an initial assessment of CDM project risks, so that overall it lays a fundamental building block for the elaboration of a strategic implementation and sustainable investment under the CDM.

En los últimos veinte años, los sistemas educativos de América Latina han sido objeto de cambios de variada índole. Si bien ha sido una época prolífica en intentos de reforma educativa que, mal que bien, reflejan la intensidad e incertidumbres que viven nuestras sociedades, sus resultados son todavía inciertos, especialmente en lo que se refiere al logro de la equidad educativa. Si bien existen bastantes razones que explican el freno al crecimiento educativo, destacaremos en este artículo la falta de articulación e integralidad en los cambios adoptados, integralidad cada vez más necesaria dada la creciente complejidad de los problemas y de los sistemas educativos actuales. También porque dichos cambios y el desarrollo de los instrumentos que le dan vida han terminado respondiendo a intereses particulares de algunos de los actores de la escena educativa. En particular, buena parte de las acciones ha estado guiada por los intereses y la tensión entre la burocracia central y los sindicatos de docentes. En este trabajo se presentan de manera esquemática los cambios recientes más significativos ocurridos en el sector de la educación, se exploran algunas de las razones que les dieron origen, y por último se analiza hacia dónde van los sistemas educativos de la región.
