Abstract:
We study the effects of a Bolivian law that introduced benefits and protections for child workers (who are overwhelmingly informal workers) and lowered the de facto legal working age from 14 to 10. We employ a difference-in-discontinuity approach that exploits the variation in the laws application to different age groups. Work decreased for children under 14, whose work was newly legalized and regulated under the law, particularly in areas with a higher threat of inspections. The effects appear to be driven by a reduction in the most visible forms of child work, suggesting that firms may have

This paper examines how progressive rights frameworks are instrumentalised as gender backlash tools to suppress feminist activism. I engage with the events following Rehana Fathima’s political act ‘Body and Politics’ which faced strong backlash in the form of censure through law, and discourse capture. Using a conceptual framework I developed, I explore how various backlash concepts – co-option, censure, and discourse capture - discursively interact with each other, and identify factors that facilitate cohesion across backlash actors. I argue that in the Rehana Fathima case, the rights framewo

Abstract:
At some point in our lives, there is a high likelihood that each of us will provide care to someone we know – and receive care ourselves – at least once. Family members are typically the first to step up to provide, manage and sometimes pay for this care. The forms of family care we provide and receive are so diverse, not to mention second nature, that we may not even think of them as caregiving: driving a sibling to a medical appointment, preparing a meal for a grandparent, picking up a sick child from school – these are all a part of the “landscape of care” in which we live. The series of Rejuvenate dialogues are intended to foster debate across a community of practice working on child and youth rights. Our first dialogue examined the principles that can help support child and youth-centred research and community development. We met online on 14th September 2021. Presenters and participants joined from around the world, reflecting the diversity and breadth of experience in the fie

Abstract:
Since the birth of the first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the UK in 1978, millions of people around the world have built their families using fertility treatments. One in six people of reproductive age worldwide experience infertility in their lifetime. That statistic does not account for single parents by choice, for 2SLGBTQI+ couples wanting to have children, or for those who require fertility preservation for medical reasons (such as a cancer diagnosis), who will need fertility care to form their families.
