This research aimed to understanding the concept of divinity in Arabic culture through lexemes which mean God used in the Qur’an dan Arabic Gospel. Lexeme is a smallest unit of meaning that formes a word. From the lexem, words, phrases, clauses, and discourses are formed according to Arabic’s concept of divinity. This research uses a semantic approach, through discussion on form and meaning, Brown-Yule’ s idea of text and co-text, and Sapir-Whorf hypothesis on culture and language. The paper first describes conversion, and then presents specific problems raised by conversion with regard to formal and semantic compositionnality. Unexpectedly, conversion is particularly problematical with respect to semantic compositionnality: lexemes involved into a conversion relation seem to be compositionnal to one another. Finally, the paper shows that the same problem is found with other affixal lexeme formation processes.

There are paradigms, in some languages at some stage of their development, where suppletive distributions are maximally complex — like one stem of a verb being used for 1st Person Singular and 3rd Person Plural and another stem for all other person and number forms, which in terms of paradigm geometry is a crossover distribution. When we measure the temperature using a thermometer, we assume that the measurement we obtain is not dependent on the conditions of measurement, such as which thermometer we use. If one thermometer measured 40 °, another 250 and a third 150, then the lack of objectivity would invalidate the very idea of accurately measuring temperature.
