The article focuses on the changes of nouns, the lexico-grammatical features of which make it impossible to refer them to a specific lexico-grammatical class. The article is based on the assumption, that traditional methodological foundations, generally accepted in native language studies – the grammatical classification, according to which nouns belong to one of the four classes: concrete, abstract, collective or material nouns, – is rather conventional and doesn't cover many transitional phenomena observed in substantive lexis. The expansion of nominal semantic structure is often accompanied

The importance of language in literary discourse can never be over-emphasized. Halliday and Matthiessen (2014), in broad terms, contend that language is used to carry out interpersonal functions in speech and writing. Hence, literary writers use language creatively to communicate their intended messages to their readers. This study, therefore, explores the lexico-grammatical assessment of AdaOkere Agbasimalo’s The Forest Dames. The study aimed at identifying the prevalent linguistic tools deployed in the novel by the author, as a style index, for plot and theme developments. Also, to discuss l

Writing abstracts requires a more disciplined style of writing, with higher demands on both form and substance. Graduate students are expected to produce scholarly outputs attuned to the rhetorical and linguistic conventions of abstract writing, acceptable to a wider academic community. Thus, this study examined the usage, distribution, and order of moves, along with the identification of selected lexico-grammatical features of 43 masters’ thesis abstracts from nine graduate programs of a state university. Corpus-based contrast reveals that minutes share a common rhetorical structure but show differences in the lexico-grammatical choices associated with the various rhetorical parts. In that regard, Bazerman (2005) discusses notions such as genre, genre sets, genre systems and activity systems. This chapter looks at the routinization of syntagmatic associations and their cooperation with paradigmatic associations. It begins by formulating the syntagmatic-strengthening principle, which states that as syntagmatic associations between sequentially arranged elements are strengthened by repetition, the symbolic, paradigmatic, and pragmatic associations of the whole sequence are strengthened, while those of the component parts are weakened. This principle explains effects such as the phraseological tendency, collocation, lexical and lexico-grammatical chunking, idiomatization, and the emer

The paper explores the power of connotations to convey and shape meaning with reference to the English lexeme silence and its Bulgarian counterparts ‒ the lexemes тишина and мълчание. These lexemes denote situations of silence but also connote people’s subjective interpretation of such situations. In extralinguistic reality, situations of silence, associated mostly with the lack of events, activities, sounds or speech, have the power to trigger the experiencer’s intellectual appraisal and emotional reactions due to the number of possible subjective interpretations of the respective situation.
