The article presents a comparative lexico-semantic analysis of the concept of Nature in Henry David Thoreau's book “Walden, or Life in the Woods” and its Russian translation published by Nauka in 1979, with an emphasis on its philosophical and ideological aspects. Nature is viewed as an autonomous space and an ecological alternative to industrial civilization. Translation solutions for some of the key expressions that affect the depth of the author’s philosophical message are analyzed. Semantic transformations that convey the author’s message in the Russian translation are identified.
