Abstract:
This exploratory phenomenological study served the purpose of investigating the phenomenon of the Zimbabwean academic librarian whose professional identity has been evolving into Bell and Shank's (2007) blended librarianship over the past decade. The primary objective of this study was to explore the shared experiences of blended librarianship to find out how effectively Zimbabwean academic librarians adhere to their dynamic roles and functions, and how they are perceived in the university. To achieve the primary goal, the study was framed using the theoretical constructs from Lave and Wenger's (1991) Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP) and Communities of Practice (CoP), to understand how academic librarians learnt in the workplace through involvement in authentic work tasks. The research methodology relied on Heidegger’s Interpretive Phenomenology Analysis and the philosophy of interpretivism. The researcher looked for the academic librarian’s experiences of blended librarianship and then made sense of the academic librarian’s interpretation, to draw out a common meaning of blended librarianship. The researcher collected data from a calculated sample of 101 academic librarians from non-professional roles to Library Board level. Data collected was triangulated using multiple methods of data collection that included a semi-structured questionnaire, document research and semi-structured interviews. Data was collected from academic librarians from the Bindura State University of Education, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Lupane State University, Midlands State University, the National University of Science and Technology, and PHSBL80 University which was anonymised. Though blended librarianship had been adopted in different academic libraries through various ways that account for the sociocultural and historical issues in each academic library, it can be concluded that blended librarianship may bridge the theory-practice divide. The study recommends academic libraries to move towards integrating the teaching of Information Literacy Skills (ILS) and Low Threshold Technologies Applications (LTAs) into the courses that are taught by lecturers. This is set to place academic librarians within the context of their community, where they can contribute “legitimately” as equals, rather than working at the periphery of the classroom where they have a subservient role as seen in the study.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how librarians, in their own point of view, can and do handle influences on their daily work routines. The main focus is on whether the librarians’ experiences suggest that these influences lead to self-censorship in how media and information is acquired, handled and distributed. The contrast between the librari-ans’ actual and ideal situations, regarding their perceived freedom to act, are also examined. Seven librarians from different fields and different parts of Sweden are questioned using semi-structured interviews. The results are analyzed using models of self-censorship from Bar-Tal and Beckman as well as an influential article on selection and censorship in libraries from Asheim. A closer reading of the librarians’ stories finds four recurring themes: Perceived autonomy and freedom, Motives and context, Examples of influence and self-censorship and Ideals and reailty. The themes are analyzed in depth, with key quotes from the librarians serving as illustrations, using the aforementioned theoretical models as tools. From these analyses, the following conclusions are drawn: Preceptions of autonomy and workload in-fluence how librarians view their freedom to propose new ideas and handle media and information in accordance with their ideals. There also seems to exist a discrepancy regarding the librarians’ expected flexibility with rules and routines, leading to confusion among the librarians. Furthermore, disinclinations towards discussion in the workplace are common when the topics are controversial, such as the removal of racist material, and attempts at discussion are often ignored. Lastly, proximity to the end users also influence the librarians, leading to an increased risk of bias in selection and weeding processes. Together these things influence how librarians cope with management of collections and activities, as well as how they treat colleagues and end users, in the context of self-censorship. The conclusions, as well as their effects on librarians, libraries and society as a whole, are then discussed. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and information science.

In 2002, a pilot project established school libraries in eleven primary schools in Melani, Fort Beaufort District. The role players in this initiative were South African Partners (an American Non Governmental Organization), the Eastern Cape Department of Education, the University of Fort Hare and the Library and Information Science Association of South Africa (LlASA). Each school nominated one teacher to receive teacher librarianship training to manage and sustain the school libraries. The aim of the project was to develop a model that would lead to the establishment and development of school libraries in other areas of the Eastern Cape. This research project sought to investigate the effectiveness of teacher librarians in primary schools reflecting on the experience of the Melani cluster of schools. The aim was to assess the effects the school libraries have had on teaching and learning. The qualitative and quantitative study involved 110 primary learners, 39 educators, 11 teacher librarians, and an official from the Provincial Department of Education.

This chapter discusses some of the challenges faced by tribal libraries. Considering the information provided throughout the rest of this volume, it is clear that some of the core issues-such as poor broadband availability, difficulties in achieving economies of scale, and barriers to collaboration-are shared between tribal institutions and rural libraries throughout the United States. The chapter presents a brief review of the literature on tribal libraries, establishing how they compare with rural public libraries in the United States. The remainder of the chapter is designed as a conversation piece, with responses from interviews with librarians from two tribal libraries detailing how the challenges faced by these outlets parallel those faced by America's rural libraries. • Tribal libraries face obstacles that are common among nontribal rural public libraries, such as poor broadband Internet availability, lack of funding, and geographic barriers that limit patron access. • Although public libraries exist in some tribal communities, other forms of libraries and cultural heritage institutions often fill the service roles that public libraries occupy in nontribal communities. • Public-oriented information institutions in tribal communities commonly preserve and promote tribal heritage, often as one of their primary purposes. Considering that this is often achieved on limited budgets, further documentation of these efforts could be useful for guiding nontribal rural public libraries that wish to do more to preserve and promote their local cultural heritage. This study creates bridges between rural public libraries in the United States and tribal libraries, which are commonly studied as two separate phenomena. Although the authors document how these types of institutions differ from each other in significant ways, barriers of broadband access, geographic isolation, and lack of funding are common across both rural and tribal libraries. The information provided in this chapter shows that both types of institutions need solutions for similar problems.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the professional identities oflibrarians with special focus on User Experience (UX). To achieve this aimwe have used the four professional identities described by Jenny Lindberg, the communicative identity, the technical identity, the academic identity andthe conservative identity. We have interviewed seven librarians at fivedifferent academic libraries in Sweden that works with UX. In the analysis ofour empirical material we found that the identity most represented among theinformants was the communicative identity while the conservative identitywas seen by the informants as their anthesis. Furthermore we added apotential fifth identity, the progressive identity.

Abstract:
Some homeless men are very frequent public library users, but are rarely asked by librarians for their opinions about libraries. Semi-structured individual interviews of 23 homeless men investigated how they used libraries and explored their understanding of the library as a place in downtown Vancouver, BC. Despite not being eligible for regular library membership privileges, often due to simply not having an address, 14 participants were still very frequent Central Library users. Homelessness is a high risk lifestyle and 4 participants who purposely avoided street danger in the Downtown Eastside found a safer niche within the Central Library, while 15 participants purposely chose to physically distance themselves from the stigma of homelessness and mostly kept to themselves while they were at the Central Library, which was often daily from opening until closing. Public space in libraries is especially valuable to homeless people who have no private space of their own. Amenities such as washrooms, comfortable seating and access to the Internet, which are not as freely available elsewhere as they are at libraries, made the Central Library the preferred library among all participants. Just like many of the other library users at the Central Library, participants enjoyed very ordinary library experiences, such as reading for pleasure, learning, playing online games, searching the Internet and sending and receiving emails, and some of the most frequent users created a new social identity for themselves as library users, which is far more socially acceptable than the stigmatized social identity of homelessness. Being a frequent library user gave some participants a routine and stability and the anonymity of being an ordinary library user at the Central Library gave participants an opportunity to be treated respectfully by other library users. Seventeen participants believed that using public libraries had greatly improved their lives and used libraries as transition spaces to improve their circumstances. Some participants who were frequent library users said they would like to have their own library membership for the Central Library, perhaps as much to give them a sense of belonging in their own community as for borrowing library materials.

Abstract:
This essay examines how trans people experience Swedish public libraries, as well as how the library can be an integral part of their trans identity work. The data sample was collected through semi-structured phenomenological interviews with five trans and non-binary library users. The analysis of the interview data was done using the method of thematic analysis (TA), following an inductive approach. The theoretical framework focuses on five different, but connecting, concepts. Mainly, theories about intersectionality; whiteness; the heterosexual matrix; orientation; and categorization. The results of this study show that trans people use and experience the library in a myriad of different ways. It is clear, however, that all the informants look to libraries to provide them with material that they can see themselves represented in, to get a sense of validation for their gender identity. Even though the library provides this in some ways, other aspects connected to libraries function to hinder trans people in their identity work. There are several ways that libraries can improve on their services toward trans patrons, and one of these are to better facilitate meetings between different trans people through more activities catering towards this group. In short, libraries need to be mindful about this specific group both when it comes to the services they offer, as well as the physical layout of the library space. These are all aspects which affect and influence trans people and their ability to construct and express their gender identity.

The National Science Digital Library (NSDL), launched in December 2002, is emerging as a center of innovation in digital libraries as applied to education. As a part of this extensive project, the GetSmart system was created to apply knowledge management techniques in a learning environment. The design of the system is based on an analysis of learning theory and the information search process. Its key notion is the integration of search tools and curriculum support with concept mapping. More than 100 students at the University of Arizona and Virginia Tech used the system in the fall of 2002. A database of more than one thousand student-prepared concept maps has been collected with more than forty thousand relationships expressed in semantic, graphical, node-link representations. Preliminary analysis of the collected data is revealing interesting knowledge representation patterns.

Abstract:
This study investigates a semi-automatic method for creation of topical labels representing the topical concepts in information objects. The method is called rotated latent semantic indexing (rLSI). rLSI has found application in text mining but has not been used for topical labels generation in digital libraries (DLs). The present study proposes a theoretical model and an evaluation framework which are based on the LSA theory of meaning and investigates rLSI in a DL environment. The proposed evaluation framework for rLSI topical labels is focused on human-information search behavior and satisfaction measures. The experimental systems that utilize those topical labels were built for the purposes of evaluating user satisfaction with the search process. A new instrument was developed for this study and the experiment showed high reliability of the measurement scales and confirmed the construct validity. Data was collected through the information search tasks performed by 122 participants using two experimental systems. A quantitative method of analysis, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), was used to test a set of research hypotheses and to answer research questions. The results showed a not significant, indirect effect of topical label type on both guidance and satisfaction. The conclusion of the study is that topical labels generated using rLSI provide the same levels of alignment, guidance, and satisfaction with the search process as topical labels created by the professional indexers using best practices.

Abstract:
Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has entered into partnership agreements with federal and state agencies to ensure permanent storage and public access to a variety of government information sources. As digital resource preservation encompasses a wide variety of interrelated activities, the UNT Libraries are taking a phased approach to ensure the long-term access to its digital resources. Formulation of preservation policy and creation of preservation metadata for electronic files and digital collections are among the most important steps. This paper discusses the issues related to digital resources preservation and demonstrates the role of preservation metadata in facilitating the preservation activities in general. In particular, it describes the efforts being made by the UNT libraries to ensure the long-term access and preservation of various digital information resources.

Abstract:
Online searchers in Australia were studied through six sets of variables: backgrounds, experience, attitudes, behaviours, styles and satisfaction. A mailed questionnaire attracted a response rate of 84.5 per cent. Respondents were drawn equally from academic and special libraries. Those in special libraries tended to be more satisfied with their searches, and favoured adaptability but not preplanning. Those whose organisations levied charges appeared to search less often and to have less faith in controlled vocabularies. A minority with computational backgrounds tended to have more searching experience. Many respondents searched infrequently and had conducted low total numbers of searches. Those searching more often were less cost conscious, and more in favour of trial-and-error and reviewing retrieved titles. Searchers who had conducted more searches favoured trial-and-error , browsing and reviewing retrieved titles. Controlled vocabularies, adaptability (related to a disinclination to review retrieved titles), trial-and-error and browsing were favoured . Fidel's conceptualist style tended to be adopted by those favouring trial-and-error. Her operationalist style was considered routine and positively related to perceived user satisfaction with searches. Some concern about cost was related to a tendency to plan alternative strategies.

Abstract:
This research project focussed on the onboarding experiences of newly appointed staff at academic libraries of the following institutions: University of Pretoria, Tshwane University of Technology (Pretoria West Campus), and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. The main aim of the study was to investigate the experiences of librarians with regard to the onboarding programmes that they have attended at their respective institutions. The key finding of the research was that newly appointed librarians had different experiences. In spite of the differences there was significant evidence that new librarians can benefit from proper introduction and orientation in their new jobs. The need for onboarding arises from a variety of circumstances ranging from inadequate graduate training to rapidly advancing technology. The study also recognised the current trend of new generation librarians’ short stay in the job and eventually leaving the profession. Factors contributing to librarians’ perception of onboarding programmes were also studied. It was found that much of the common factors that shape onboarding practices arise from the planning and implementation of the programme. A similar approach is used by the selected libraries The study used the survey method. An online questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were data gathering tools. The study adopted the qualitative research method with close ended questions, ranking scales as well as open ended questions. An online questionnaire was distributed to the 30 potential participants. Twenty-three (23) responses were received, which means a response rate of 76% was obtained. An important finding in this regard was that the onboarding programme was not evaluated by parties involved in the instruction and feedback on the success of the programme was not received by participants. In addition participants were not assessed prior to the programme so that their input could be used to inform the relevance of the contents of the programme. Based on the findings the researcher made some recommendations to enhance the planning of the programme in future. The study concludes with directions for future research to contribute to the implementation of onboarding as part of the practice of employee development.

Abstract:
A recent phenomenon within the library sector is that of User Experience (UX). Library and information practitioners are increasingly leaning towards letting their users help guide and organise library services by using UX methods to both evaluate existing services and to create new ones. Despite that an increased number of academic librarians are focusing on researching their Library UX, few studies have been done on this phenomenon, and none have focused on a Swedish context. In this thesis, the emerging phenomenon of Library UX is investigated by performing a qualitative case study at two academic libraries in Sweden. The posed research questions focus on four areas: what impacts the implementations of UX methods have on an academic library, how UX methods are learnt, if this new emphasis on Library UX will affect the user-librarian relationship and if something can be said about the future of Library UX. The main theory used is Actor-Network Theory (ANT), which together with the use of the Foucauldian perspective on knowledge/power has been employed to analyse the collected empirical data to further the understanding of the phenomenon. The findings are divided into two parts. Firstly, the case study depicting the results of the collected empirical data. Secondly, the ANT-analysis of the Library UX network is presented, which is based on the data collected in the case study. The main conclusions that can be drawn from this study are how UX methods are perceived by the informants as leading to improved library services. There is also a clear consensus among the informants on how the new perspective of the user presented within the Library UX framework will deepen the user centred focus even further at the libraries. Furthermore, the ANT-analysis shows how the phenomenon has primarily emerged through advocacy and how advocates have a central role in how knowledge about Library UX and UX methods are spread within the library world.

Abstract:
The study explored the opportunities, the experience, developments and challenges of academic library automation, with a perspective from Anglophone West Africa, Ghana Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia and Liberia. Literature was triangulated with empirical data to ascertain whether the same elements were present for the resultant countries. Questionnaires were used for the empirical data whilst the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method was adopted for the secondary data. Findings revealed that majority of the libraries were at different stages in the automation process. The challenges and opportunities discovered were not different from one country to the other. Increased access to a wider range of formats, increased resource sharing resulting from Inter Library Loan (ILL), effective and efficient service, increased visibility, fast and convenient service, searchability and discoverability were identified as some of the opportunities. Development such as the application of open source software, discovery as a search tool, cloud computing, consortia, data security, gamification, Resource Description Access (RDA) and application of mobile devices were gradually exploited by Anglophone West African academic libraries. Some of the challenges that were discovered include; poor internet connectivity, inadequate technical expertise to manage automated systems, lack of computers, poor cooperation, erratic power supply, inadequate project management skills amongst other. Recommendations identified to manage the challenges were increased bandwidth to improve internet connectivity, provision of adequate power supply, availability of systems librarians, increased collaboration and consortia, application of project management skills, and capacity of librarians in the areas of advanced Information Communication Technology (ICT) applications.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to explore the importance of library design to students, whether the interior design of a library has any effect on their experience when using its services, and what the students themselves believe is most important for the library to do to stay afloat in a society that is constantly evolving and becoming more digital. The study will also bring up UX (User Experience) as a method for library design. The theories used in this study are the third place theory, as well as a comparison to the ideals of the Learning Commons model. In order to find out how the students view the library and the impact of its design, five interviews with five different students at Linneaus University in Växjö were conducted. The results show that the library generally inspires the students to feel motivated and at ease in a place that is comfortable and safe. It also shows that the design and the general atmosphere of the library does play a specific role in the students’ overall experience of the library as it impacts many of the choices they make while they’re there, such as where to sit or which places to avoid. The majority of the students are mostly happy with the library as it is except for minor inconveniences, and merely wishes for the library to continue in the same way in the future while adapting to any new changes that may come in its way.

Abstract: Between 1990 and 1992 the Secretary of Education of the City of Campinas supported, as an isolated initiative, the organization of the libraries of its Municipal Schools. In 1993, the ¿School Libraries Program¿ was launched. It was initially referred to as the ¿Library Project¿, through the establishment of a general coordination for integrated actions. In 2001, the program was partially deprived of its characteristics, and in 2002 it was deactivated, in its eight years long format, with advisement to teachers and schools, and also several activities for increasing reading dynamics. Thus, schools started to manage their library spaces on their own, like before. In its nine years of existence, the ¿School Libraries Program¿ generated a large amount of diversified written and visual documentation, besides a set of initiatives, experiences and possibilities with books and libraries at nursery schools, pre-schools and elementary schools from the municipal education system. Due to the nature of the program, which articulated the installation of libraries to the advisement of teachers, the constitution of leading teams, the realization of meetings and events along its existence, it also generated a set of perceptions, memories, opinions and evaluations for those who could participate of it. The goal of this work is to organize that experience, from different, dispersed and fragmented memories and documents, in different and varied media, pointing out the standpoint of those who organized the experience at the Secretary of Education level. The historical narrative registers a collective action around books and school libraries that, as an institutional action and public policy for the school and the book, surmounted a mere distribution of materials. In fact, it constituted a political stand for continuing teachers¿ formation

The rapid advancement of ICTs has been adding to the avalanche of knowledge, by providing means to make more effective communication of recorded knowledge among men. The principle of digital libraries focuses on the design of an information system able to identify, locate, seek and make available to its users the information they need. The objective of this study was to investigate the development of digital libraries as the systematization of activity providing the knowledge generated and / or maintained by research institutions and / or government, as well as adherence to international standards in order to identify characteristics and trends in their projects to provide care to the diverse needs of users. To this end, availed himself of the analysis of practices, policies and standards, such as: software technologies, metadata standards, funding sources and purposes of creation, in the following digital libraries: Europeana, DART, NDLDT, CDL, BDAV, BIBLIODAR, BDCOL and BDTD and the study of the characteristics inherent in digital libraries, aiming at identifying the resources required for its development. The first projects of digital libraries users considered as mere consumers of digital resources. The project was focused on the digital object. Currently, the digital library should put the user at the center of its development. Issues involving the diversity of user needs coupled with issues of quality and continuity of services are in vogue and can be observed in the use of centralized catalogs, use of a single index, in artifacts available technological developments and research projects in some of libraries analyzed.

With the rapid development of the Internet Technology, a great variety of means of communication has emerged, especially Blogs. The Four Zero characteristics (zero technology, zero cost, zero edition, zero format) of the Blogs are widely used and applied in the educational and social environments, and have a great acknowledged impact among the society. The trend of using the Blogs has been emphasized in the domain of the Library and Information Science and is called for the implementation in the application of its services. In the recent years, more and more personnel of the Academic Librarian have been trying to apply the Blogs into their services offered. However, the establishment experiences and the personal usage of the Blogs are even more important, as the accomplishment of the Academic Librarian’s Blog might influence the quality of the institute’s Blog. This study focuses on the usage and establishment experiences of the Blog from Academic Librarians, so as to build up a reference for either future library Blog application or the characteristics of Academic Librarians’ community. Questionnaires are mainly used in this study, covering 87 universities in Taiwan. 456 out of 751 samples are successfully received. Besides, semi-structured interviews are used to obtain a more complete study toward this issue where the 4 mostly mentioned bloggers are interviewed. Results show that the Blogs are widely used among the personnel of the Academic Librarian, chiefly to share personal knowledge and life. The Academic Librarian gets to know the source of the Blogs through 「Friends & relatives」or「Searching engines」. The knowledge-type Blogs are mostly used; Topics concerning Library and Information Science are most popular among Academic Librarians. Compared to other means of internet communication, such as BBS or personal websites, the Academic Librarian tend to read into details when reading Blogs, and pay much attention to the frequency of the update as well as its reliability and the copy rights. 60 percent of the respondents are experienced in the build up of Blogs, most of which are Diary-type Blogs , followed by Knowledge-type Blogs. As for the content, the main information provided in the Academic Librarian personal Blogs is primarily about sharing「after-reading thoughts」、「working and learning experiences」and 「article translations」. Then regarding the aim of the Blogs, information exchange between business partners is mostly expected. Concerning the difficulties encountered during the build up of the Academic Librarian personal Blogs are「time and effort spent for the maintenance of Blogs」、「platform selection and transfer」、「Blog content and backup」and「template design」etc. However, the main solution used is trying to solve the problem by oneself and ask for help from experienced people. The Academic Librarians recognize the positive impact of the Blogs to personal learning and knowledge sharing.

Participating in volunteer works can help youths grow and learn, and the public library, as one of the social education institutions, should assist youths to grow up. The purpose of this study was to investigate the service-learning experience of youths participating in public library volunteer works, as well as their impact on the services of library. Therefore, this study’s objectives were to interpret the public library planning process on the youth volunteer works, the reflection and the process of the youths being volunteers, and the interaction between youth volunteers and the public library. The methodology used in this study was case study, using Kaohsiung Culture Center Library as the research field; and youth volunteers, adult volunteers, and librarians as the research subjects. Through interviews, observations, and gathering documents, the researcher analyzed youth volunteers’ reflection and the interaction with the public library. The findings can be summarized as the following: 1. The public library planning for the youth volunteer works aims to achieve a win-win effect for both parties. 2. The library has flexible space in executing the youth volunteer works, but is required to obtain further consensus with the staffs, to let the project be implemented definitely. 3. Although the motivations of youths participating volunteer works have been changed with the service course, they are still egoism oriented. 4. The youth volunteers are mainly responsible for basic library works. 5. It was hard for librarians to control the work performance of the youth volunteers. In general, they are not concentrated and positive enough in their works. 6. Youth volunteers have changed their images of the libaray, and get to know more about the library''s resources and services through the process of the volunteer works. 7. The interaction between youth volunteers and librarians is good, but only limited in work. 8. The library will be continue the youth volunteer program as they can help the library to operate efficiently.

Abstract:
The landscape of learning spaces in academic libraries is undergoing continual change, re-adaptation and reconfiguration. These winds of change are ushered in by the very nature of the dynamic information economy. Globally, information needs of end-users in academic libraries have dictated the changing space trends as in this case study of the Research Commons of the Howard College Library at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The demands of the changing information economy have directed institutions of higher learning en route to tailoring their outcomes with the view to increasing research output and productivity. In view of this, Academic libraries are finding themselves increasingly becoming significantly involved in the process of research support. The Research Commons (RC) is one such research support initiative of UKZN Libraries. This RC opened its doors, offering research facilities to a designate cohort of Master’s, Doctoral students, Researchers and Academic staff on the 01st of October 2008. Three years to date, the facility has grown in its popularity and patronage. The study of the end-users of the RC emanated from an express interest of the researcher who supports EUs in the capacity of a Senior Librarian. Time spent in the RC further, piqued the interest of the researcher, who was particularly keen about how EUs interacted with the elements of this space and their experiences thereof. This study was conducted with the express aim of understanding, through a qualitative inquiry the experiences of the end-users of the (RC) situated at the Howard College Library of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I the researcher in attempting to examine these experiences found myself having to address the following key research questions: What are the experiences of the end-users of the learning space? Who are the end-users of the Research Commons? With what elements of the Research Commons do the end-users interact? In what ways do the end-users interact with the different elements? The survey methodology approach was employed using the following instruments: Online and manual survey questionnaires Interviews Observations The different data collection techniques served to generate the richest data for the researcher to use in the interpretation of the results. An important element of this survey was an attempt to ascertain as deep an understanding of the experiences of the EUs in relation to their interaction with this designated space and its elements in their research journey. The findings of the survey demonstrated that the EUs of the RC did indeed encounter experiences that were precipitated by their interaction with the elements of this space. Significantly, it was revealed that EUs found that their time spent in the RC contributed positively to their research experiences. It was further established that interaction with the space and its elements influenced the way in which EUs work. In disclosing the desirability of the RC in meeting their research needs, the EUs were keen to render suggestions for changes and enhancements to the RC. Overall, it was verified that this study shed valuable evidence on how the EUs experienced the RC. Consequently, emanating through the interpretation of the data, the researcher was able to identify possible gaps in the provision of this research support unit which has perhaps added value to this study in providing library management with the necessary understanding in addressing the research needs of the EUs of the RC more than adequately.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 97-104
In this dissertation I examine the public's use of two community libraries in the Moretele local municipality. My research focused on who uses the libraries, for what purpose the libraries are being used, and patrons’ perceptions of the libraries. Data was collected using three methods namely interviews, observations in the form of seating sweeps and written patron surveys. The data collected show that the libraries play an important role in the information and social needs of the communities. They are highly valued for the resources they provide such as study space, books and photocopiers. The libraries are also greatly utilised by local communities, especially UNISA students, and function as public and third places. As public spaces they offer the community a space to meet, work together and discuss issues that are of importance to the community. As third places, the libraries offer ideal places for people, especially the youth, to play and socialise. I conclude that the libraries are irreplaceable spaces for the community and, therefore, not easily replicated elsewhere.
Kule-dissertation, ngihlola ukusetshenziswa ngumphakathi kwamalayibrari amabili omphakathi kuMasipala wendawo yaseMoretele. Ucwaningo lwami lugxila ekuthengi ngobani abasebenzisa amalayibrari, nokuthi bawasebenzisela ziphi izinhloso lamalayibrari, kanye nemibono yabantu abasebenzisa lamalayibrari. Ulwazi luqokelelwe ngezindlela ezintathu, okuyilezi, ama-interview, ukuqapha okwenzekayo ngendlela yokubheka ukuthi abantu bayisebenzisa kanjani indawo kanye nokwenza ama-survey abhaliwe kubasebenzisi belayibrari. Ulwazi oluqokelelwe lukhombise ukuthi amalayibrari adlala indima ebalulekile ngolwazi, kanye nezidingo zabantu emphakathini. Athathwa njengomthombo obaluleke kakhulu ngoba asiza ngendawo yokutadisha, izincwadi kanye nokwenza ama-photocopy. Amalayibrari abuye asetshenziswe yimiphakathi yendawo, ikakhulukazi izitshudeni zase-Unisa, kanti futhi abuye abe yindawo lapho lapho umphakathi ohlangana khona kanye nokuba yindawo yesithathu kwabanye abantu. Njengendawo yokuhlangana kwabantu, ahlinzeka ngendawo yemihlangano yomphakathi, ukusebenzisana kanye nokuxoxa ngezinto ezibalulekile emphakathini. Indawo yesithathu, amalayibrari asiza ngendawo enhle kubantu, ikakhulukazi intsha, ukudlala kanye nokuzihlanganyela nje khona ukubonana nokuxoxa. Ngiphetha ngokuthi amalayibrari yindawo isikhundla sawo engeke yathathwa ngokunye emphakathini, ngakho-ke, akuwona izinto indawo yawo engathathwa ngokunye noma ukwenziwa kwenye indawo.

The aim of this study is to learn about senior high school principals’ perceptions of the theoretical and practical functions of high school libraries. It also examines the barriers and facilitators to fully implement the functions and to explore the types of actions that can be taken to develop principal support. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six public senior high school principals who were once directors of senior high school libraries. The response analysis from the purposive samples indicate that: (A) There is a difference between the perceived theoretical functions and the perceived practical functions of high school libraries.(B) The barriers to fully implement the theoretical library functions include students’ overwhelming stress of the college entrance exam; students’ being disinterested in reading; lack of formal library instructional courses, professional librarians, and support from teachers for collaboration and integration. Meanwhile, the changes in the educational climate, particularly the move to a diverse college entrance system, resource-based learning and hiring certified staff, have created opportunities for school libraries to function. (C) Five out of the six interviewees shared the same perception that most high school principals have little knowledge of the theoretical functions and true value of modern school libraries. Principals should be led to be knowledgeable about the library in order to become a strongly supportive advocate of the school library. Suggestions are submitted as followed: (A) Senior high school library staff should update their professional knowledge and inform their principals of the crucial functions of school libraries by communicating regularly with the principals and building shared vision with them to gain principal support. (B) Senior high school principals should know the potential of school libraries and empower them to be the niche of a quality school by hiring certified staff and encouraging collaboration between librarians and teachers. (C) The training and administration organizations should beat the drum for the true potential of a school library by including library and information science in the principal as well as teacher preparation programs, inviting principals to attend in-service training, conferences and visits of model school libraries and by offering library program checklists , guidelines or manual brochures for principals. Last but not least, the training organizations should make sure that strategies of communication are part of their program so as to breed the librarians who can develop the support and partnership with principals and teachers in schools.

The public library users nowadays live rich material and fast-paced lives; yet they pay more attention to their spiritual needs, sensory fulfillment and the promotion of quality of life. They therefore naturally value the leisure function of public libraries. The library practice serves leisure function but few research investigates users’ experiences and viewpoints. The purpose of this research is to understand user attitudes and perspectives toward the leisure function of public libraries through developing a leisure experience and place attachment scale to explore whether users’ leisure experience would affect their place attachment, and the influence of individual differences on the two scales. The research objects comprised users in National Library of Public Information that aims at bringing together reading, leisure, exploration, and life-long learning. Questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews were employed for data collection. A total of 409 copies of questionnaires were returned. Closed-ended questions were encoded using IBM Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) and analysized by descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Chi-square test, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, independent sample t test and one-way ANOVA. SmartPLS is adopted for structural equation model analysis. Open-ended questions were analyzed and subsumed into results. Nine survey respondents were invited for in-depth interviews. The interview data were prepared into text files and combined with the questionnaire statistical results for analysis before concluding into research results. The study results are as follows: 1. Users identity the provision of leisure function of public libraries. 2. Public libraries are low-intensive meeting places. 3. Users emphasize leisure reading and the space with good atmosphere for the purpose of leisure. 4. Users’ personal hobbies affect their information needs for the purpose of leisure. 5. Use characteristics include: (1) A public library’s geographic service area is limited; (2) Most of leisure forms of public libraries are individual and family activity; (3) Public libraries show potential of leisure for the elderly; (4) The frequency of participating in library activities positively correlated to the frequency of using other resources. 6. Users'' leisure experience and the influences of individual differences: (1) “Environmental aesthetic experience” is the strongest dimension of leisure experience; (2) Users’ socio-economic status and use characteristics are partially have influences on four dimension of leisure experience respectively. 7. Users'' place attachment and the influences of individual differences: (1) “Place dependence” is the strongest dimension of place attachment; (2) Users’ socio-economic status and use characteristics are partially have influences on three dimension of place attachment respectively. 8. Positive relationship was found significantly between leisure experience and place attachment, and leisure experience have predict ability to place attachment. The study proposed the following suggestions as a reference for public libraries in Taiwan: 1. To set up public transportation stops near the library. 2. To design activities, services and spaces for different kinds of target group. 3. To promote library collections and activities oriented by users'' interests. 4. Abstract:
Legal deposit and its sustainability is a major problem that cannot be ignored in South Africa. The value of preserving and making accessible information is of primary importance for legal deposit collections. The concept of legal deposit is evolving from decade to decade as many factors continue to influence it. Among the challenges facing legal deposit libraries is the problem of publishers failing to comply with legal deposit requirements. This study investigated the problems and constraints experienced by publishers in KwaZulu- Natal concerning legal deposit. Thirty five publishers were surveyed by means of a selfadministered questionnaire which utilized both open and closed questions. The results of the study reveal that while the vast majority of publishers in KwaZulu-Natal are compliant with legal deposit requirements, they do experience a number of problems while doing so. These problems include financial costs and time constraints while a lack of knowledge about certain aspects of legal deposit on the part of the publishers was evident. Recommendations, which would require participation from all the stakeholders, to address the problems identified were made. The study concluded with suggestions for further research.
