As policies, good practices and mandates on research data management evolve, more emphasis has been put on the licencing of data, which allows potential re-users to quickly identify what they can do with the data in question. The Pedirka Basin-Poolowanna Trough region in central Australia covers over 100,000 km2, just over half of which is in South Australia and most of the remainder in the Northern Territory. Petroleum exploration commenced in the 1950s when licences covering the Cooper and Eromanga basins were first acquired by Santos Limited.
